PROCEDURE FOR ANNULAR PLATE REPLACEMENT

 Clean the Weld of Shell to Bottom and Annular to Bottom, free of oil, greeze and
other flammable materials.

 Before starting the gouging of the shell to bottom weld, ensure that greeze, oil, cotton
or such inflammable materials are removed from near the gouging area.

 Mark 50M circumferential area around the tank periphery. Start gouging of shell to
Bottom weld both from outside and inside. Care to taken that parent metal of shell
plates is not damaged by gouging. For this purpose, the gas-cutters are to be
properly instructed that only the annular plates are going to be replaced and the shell
should not be damaged and accordingly the angle of gascutting torch to be
maintained while gouging.

 Ensure that the shell plates are totally free from the annular plates before the lifting
activity is initiated.

 Removal of welding of Annular plates to bottom is suggested by grinding instead of

gouging, as the fitter weld may be of 8mm – This will ensure that the Bottom plates
edges are not damaged. Once the bottom sketch plates a are made free from
Annular plates, the edges of Bottom plates are to be ground properly, free of spur
etc.

 Provide hydraulic lifting jacks – 50MT capacity each as per the locations shown on
the attached sketch.

 Gas cutter has to take special care while cutting the annular joints, as there is every
chance for back-fire due to the existence of bitumen underneath the plate.

 Gs cut the existing Annular 2 Nos. joints to facilitate removal of 2Nos. Annular plates.
Jacks may e provided in such a manner that removal of our no annular plate is easily
possible through between two nos. jacks. The second annular plate can be shifted to
inside and pull out through the space available in between the 2 Nos. jacks.

 Lift the tank only to the required height, which is enough for removal, insertion of old/
new annular plates.

 The same procedure as mentioned above may be adopted from insertion of new
annular plates in place of old plates cut & removed.

 After the insertion of New annular plate, check the outer radius from the center of the
tank, color dimension from the outer shell periphery before tack welding the butt-
joint.

PROCEDURE FOR ANNULAR PLATE REPLACEMENT

-2-

 Tack weld the annular butt joint with the backing strips.

 Complete welding of minimum 6” length of the area where the shell sits.D.P. test can
be now carried for the area of shell-seating, before lowering.

 Lower the tank in its correct periphery and remove the jacks.

 Shift the whole lifting arrangement to the extn 50m length of the tank periphery.

 The aforesaid procedure can be adopted further, and likewise finish the total annular
plates replacement in 5 stages.

 Parallely, the rest of the portion of annular plates joints welding can be completed.
However, annular plate to bottom joint shall be kept free until the shell to bottom
welding is completed.

 Complete the vacuum testing of inside annular joint tot eh extent possible.

 Shell to Bottom fit-up can be taken up after the completion of Annular butt joints
welding.

 Minimum 4 welders should be provided for welding of shell to Bottom at a time,

starting the welding at 4 equal locations.

 After the completion of shell to bottom I/S welding, chalk-diesel test may be carried
out prior to outside welding.

 Complete outside shell to bottom welding.

 Now, the annular to Bottom fit-up and welding can be taken-up.
