LESSON - Enumerating and Explaining
the Types of Storage Devices
and Storage Media
Subtopics: Flash Memory Devices

Another type of storage is FLASH MEMORY DEVICES, alternatively referred

to as flash storage. These devices have replaced most magnetic and optical media
because it becomes cheaper, more efficient, and reliable. Flash memory is non-
volatile computer memory, meaning it is a type of computer memory that can retrieve
stored information even after having been power cycled. Flash memory however is
more expensive than magnetic storage devices. Flash memory is used in many
devices and varies from flash drives, memory cards, to memory sticks.

Flash memory is widely used nowadays in-car radios, cellphones, digital

cameras, PDAs, solid-state drives, tablets, and printers.

A. USB (Universal Serial Bus) FLASH DRIVE

It is a portable storage device alternatively referred to

as a data stick, pen drive, memory unit, keychain drive,
thumb drive, or a jump drive. It is often the size of a
human thumb and connects to a computer via a USB
(Universal Serial Bus) port. Flash drives have a storage
capacity between 2 GB to 1 TB.

It is widely used to store and transfer information

among any type of computer. It is very convenient to use
because unlike an external hard drive, the flash drive has
no movable parts such as chord. It contains only an integrated circuit memory
chip that is used to store data, housed in a plastic aluminum casing. The term
flash drive is also used to describe an SSD (solid-state drive).

B. CF (CompactFlash)

The CompactFlash is a 50-pin connection storage

device commonly found in PDAs, digital cameras, and other
portable devices. The CF card had a reasonably large range
of sizes, in terms of storage capacity, starting from 2 MB to
128 GB.
C. M.2

M.2 is a useful connection specification for computer expansion cards,

introduced in 2014. The two major sorts of M.2 devices are the SATA M.2 and the
second one is PCIe M.2, significantly faster and more expensive.

M.2 is often used for storage devices, like SSDs, and high-performance non-
volatile memory storage, like Intel Optane. Other devices that support the M.2
standard include Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. M.2 is a form factor for SSDs (solid-state
drive) like a stick of gum faster but more expensive than traditional SSDs.

D. MEMORY CARD

It is also called a flash memory card, a type of storage

media that is often used to store photos, videos, or other data
in electronic devices. Digital cameras, digital camcorders,
handheld computers, MP3 players, PDAs, cellphones, game
consoles, and printers are among that uses memory cards.

Most memory cards today are 4GB in memory size as the

small capacity up to as large as 128 GB, however, older
memory cards maybe even smaller than 4 GB. Today, an
expensive memory card has capacity storage larger than 128
GB.

E. MMC (MultiMediaCard)

The MMC is a memory card available as flash

memory and ROM (read-only memory) used in-car radios,
cellphones, digital cameras, PDAs, MP3 players,
and printers. Today, there are various variations and
sizes of the MMC card like the MMCP (MMCplus) and
MMCM (MMCmobile / MMCmicro).

F. NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory Express)

The NVMe was a flash memory device specification introduced

by Intel in 2007. It is a non-volatile memory device that can be connected to a
computer's PCI Express (PCIe) bus.
Traditionally, SSDs are connected to the PC employing a disc
drive interface like SATA. However, SATA was designed for older data storage
devices like HDDs (hard disk drives). The NVMe allows devices to be attached to a
computer without requiring separate, and possibly conflicting, OS device drivers.

G. SD (Secure Digital) Card

The SD card is one of the more common sorts of memory cards used with
electronics. The SD technology is employed by over 400 brands of equipment and
over 8000 different models, including digital cameras and cell phones. It is
considered the industry standard due to its wide use. There are three (3) types of
SD cards: a)SD, b)MiniSD, and c)MicroSD

H. SDHC CARD (Secure Digital High Capacity Card)

The SDHC card is an improved version of the usual SD card with a

storage capacity of up to 32 GB. Because SDHC works differently than a typical
SD card, it is not backward compatible with legacy SD devices.

There are three types of SDHC cards; SDHC, Mini SDHC, and Micro SDHC.

I. SM (SmartMedia)

The SM (SmartMedia) card is another type of flash memory

card. It was first used in digital cameras and other electronic
devices.
The SmartMedia card has a smaller capacity, ranging from 2 MB to 128 MB,
and physical dimensions of 45mm x 37mm x .76mm. The SmartMedia card is no
longer produced now and considered obsolete.
J. MEMORY STICK

The registered Sony Memory Stick was first

introduced by Sony in October 1998 and is a flash memory
card used with Sony digital cameras and other Sony
products. Sony released different models of the Memory
Stick, including the Memory Stick PRO, Memory Stick Duo,
Memory Stick PRO Duo, Memory Stick Micro (M2), and
Memory Stick PRO-HG.

The Memory Sticks has a storage capacity ranging

from 4MB to 256 GB and a maximum capacity of 2TB. SD
and SDHC are memory cards used by Sony today. The
Sony company did not release any new cards since 2010
and most likely stop releasing memory sticks.

K. SSD (Solid-State Drive)

An SSD is a storage media that uses non-volatile

memory as a way of holding and accessing data. An
SSD has no moving parts, which provides it
advantages, like faster time interval, noiseless
operation, higher reliability, and lower power
consumption compared to magnetic devices.

As the costs have come down, SSDs became suitable replacements for a
typical disk drive in both desktop and laptop computers. SSDs also are an
excellent solution for netbooks, nettops, and other applications
that don't require large storage. Although an SSD uses non-volatile storage,
it shouldn't confuse with a USB jump drive or Adobe Flash.

L. xD-Picture Card

The xD-Picture Card is a flash memory card used

by Olympus and Fujifilm only. This media is used in a
limited selection of electronic devices such as digital
cameras. It has a storage capacity of up to 512 MB for the
original version, up to 2 GB for the type H and M/M+
versions, and physical dimensions of 20mm x 25mm x
https://bit.ly/39pd9M 1.78mm.
Facts!
FLASH MEMORY was first
invented by Fujio Masuoka in the
early 1980s while at Toshiba and
introduced it to the market in
1984. It was also later developed
by Intel.
