This project summary outlines the key details of the "HUMANSCAPES HABITAT" sustainable housing development in Auroville, India. The 1753 square meter development includes 3 dwelling units, community spaces, and workspaces. It aims to address sustainable building, environmental planning, reducing travel needs, and facilitating social interaction. Design priorities include cross ventilation, insulation, optimized windows, and minimizing east/west exposures. Construction utilizes local and recycled materials like Styrofoam underfloor insulation and ceramic roof waterproofing. The development also pursues integrated water, energy, and waste management with a goal of zero discharge.

VISION, AIMS AND
STRATERGY
• The “HUMANSCAPES HABITAT” is an applied
research and demonstration project of
Sustainable and Integrated Urban Living.
• This mixed-use development of
residences, community and workspaces
besides being sustainable also wants to
address the issues of skill development
and capacity building of construction
labour.
• This habitat project has integrated five goals
as part of the sustainable human settlement
program -

Sustainable built environment with solar passive building design coupled

with efficient functional space layout to reduce the built-up area and use of
low embodied.
Integrated environmental planning of water, energy and waste cycle, with
zero-discharge of water, reduction and recycling of solid waste, water-
efficient landscaping using local endemic species, and urban agriculture as
edible gardens.
Reducing point to point travel by integrating work and living spaces, using
integrated community and IT infrastructure (ICITI) for work at home with
clean mobility options like e- vehicles for movement within the local area.
The human ecology, using the principles of “shared housing” concept of
living, facilitating interaction among neighbours for inclusive socioeconomic
development with increased environmental benefits.
Establish a collaborative network of knowledge resources called ‘SustaiNet’,
to facilitate further dissemination.

Architectural desgin
• Vertical ventilating spaces between buildings to vent hot air
during daytime and draw in the cool air in the evening.
• Maximum and effective insulation reducing heat gain.
• Window-wall Ratio (WWR) optimized to control heat gain,
coupled with appropriate window shading devices to reduce
glare.
• East and west facing façades minimized with reduced west
facing windows to reduce heat gain with 100% of the windows
being operable for active modulation by the user for comfort
• Maximizing visual privacy with design to reduce use of curtains
to ensure natural light and Ventilation.
Factors considered
during site planning
• surface water management and
erosion control
• protection of topsoil during the
process of development
• soil permeability and potential for
micro-climatic variations
• environmentally suitable
landscaping with mix of urban
agriculture and geo - climatically
suitable flora
• Easy and convenient inter-
linkages with local area

BUILDING
MATERIALS AND
TECHNOLOGIES
• The buildings are built with low embodied
energy building materials coupled with re-
cycled materials.
• The under-floor filling is with shredded
Styrofoam (thermocol) for sound and heat
insulation
• Over 50% of the material used is of local origin
from within 5 km radius and most of the
finishing materials avoid industrially processed
materials. The flooring is revived local
technique of high gloss coloured cement finish
combined with local stone flooring in high
traffic areas
• The water proofing of the roofs is done with
white or light coloured 3rd quality ceramic
which also act as a cool roof.
