Assignment 2 - Too Far Ahead of IT Curve

Max Berndt believes standardization at Peachtree Healthcare should allow for flexibility to meet the needs of individual patients. While standardization offers benefits like consolidated data and reduced costs, it also introduces disadvantages such as inflexibility and high implementation costs. A Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) could help fulfill Max's requirements by creating a centralized system while still allowing customization. SOA provides a framework for selective standardization and replacing non-functional parts of existing IT systems. Peachtree Healthcare could gradually implement SOA, making changes as needed to obtain good results without taking on too much risk at once.

1.

Who do you agree with more on the issue of Standardization at Peachtree

Healthcare?

Paul Lefler

Max Berndt

None of the above

2.
What are the benefits of standardisation of healthcare at Peachtree? What are
the disadvantages?
Advantages:
● Brand new homogenous infrastructure
● A single set of systems and applications
● Complete interoperability and consistency across all of the hospitals
● A unified patient report database with the help of it we can compile all the
data of all the institutions at one place
● Pharmacy Record keeping

Disadvantages:
● High cost (500 million-1 billion)
● Rigid system
● Inflexible
● Need to train people
● Complex process of installation
● High maintenance cost

3.Can SOA fulfill the requirements of Max Berndt?

Ans- According to us, Max Berndt is majorly concerned about the agility and
flexibility of physicians, as we cannot standardise the curing process of every
patient because every patient has a different disease, so physicians should have
flexibility to prescribe accordingly. Peachtree has 11 institutions and each has its
own IT System because of which they do not have data at one place which
results in huge cost and takes more time to make decisions. With the help of
SOA(Service-oriented architecture) , we can make a central information system
which will have information of all the institutions at one place which will help us to
analyse the data and make decisions quickly and therefore we can be open to
changes with flexibility for physicians.

4. Should Max approve a shift to risky new technology or go with the time tested
monolithic system?

Yes

No

May be

5. Why/Why Not?

Why?

SOA framework will enable selective standardization within the healthcare

system and replace the non functional parts from the IT system.

As Candice is not confident for SOA as it has not been implemented by other
organisations so they can gradually implement SOA and make necessary
changes accordingly and obtain good results.

From the whole argument, the discussion of these issues shows that Peachtree
Healthcare should acquire a Service-Oriented Architecture. As it has been
discussed earlier, this framework will allow this organization to replace those
parts of IT infrastructure that do not function properly.
As it has been shown in the case study, the management of Peachtree
Healthcare feels insecure about the adoption of this technology because it has
not been widely used in healthcare organizations. Yet, one should take into
account that the adoption of SOA infrastructure is a gradual process.

The company can replace some poor-functioning components of their IT systems

with SOA-built services. Provided that these changes yield good results, the
company can continue their adoption of SOA information system.
