BRIEF INTRODUCTION
To operate a toaster oven, controls are set, the door is opened, food is placed on a
tray, and the door is closed. If set for toasting, a toaster thermostat operates the upper and
lower heating elements as selected by the color controller. If set for baking or broiling, the
baking thermostat operates the heating elements as selected by the temperature controller
and possibly by a timing mechanism.

There are a variety of toaster oven models, each with its features. However, most
operate in the same manner and can be diagnosed and repaired by applying the
suggestions that follow.

In this module, you will be guided on how to maintain regularly, replaced parts if
necessary, and manually checked your oven toaster. Safety measures must also be
considered in repairing based on international standards and procedures. Proper use of tools
and electronic equipment must also be given emphasis.

REMEMBER

How to Repair a Toaster Oven

Typical toaster oven repairs include servicing the main switch, the thermal fuse, and
the heating element.

Servicing the Main Switch

The toaster oven's main switch is an important operating part, one that gets
extensive use and is a frequent culprit when things go wrong. In many cases, all that's
required is cleaning the switch. Sometimes, the switch must be replaced. To access and
replace the main switch:
Step 1: Remove the side panel and, if necessary, the power cord.
Step 2: Check the contact points for pitting or discoloration.
If they are not making good contact, carefully rub them with very fine sandpaper,
then clean them with an electrical contact cleaner spray or isopropyl alcohol on the end of
a cotton swab. Be careful not to bend the contact leaves out of alignment.
Step 3: If the contacts are fused or the leaves are broken, remove and replace the main
switch. Main switches are fastened to the chassis with clips, screws, or rivets.

Servicing the Thermal Fuse:

A thermal fuse protects the toaster oven's main switch from damage caused by an
electrical overload. If the main switch doesn't work, check the thermal fuse using a
multitester. The thermal fuse should show continuity rather than an open circuit. If
defective, remove and replace the thermal fuse with one of identical rating. In most
models, this means cutting the fuse leads or wires and replacing the fuse unit.
Some toaster ovens use a bimetallic thermostat or thermal cutout to protect the
adjacent main switch from damage. Inspect the thermal cutout for debris, distortion, or
discoloration. As needed, clean the contact points with very fine sandpaper.

Servicing the Heating Elements
A heating element is vital to your toaster oven. It may only be on for a few
minutes to toast bread. A heating element is simply a high resistance wire that glows as
electricity flows through it.
Step 1: Determine whether or not there is a clear path for electric current by using a
multitester probe to each end of the element.
Step 2: If there is no clear path, remove the heating element. Removing an element may be
as easy as unscrewing both ends and any support brackets; however, it may also require
that rivets be removed and replaced. Your decision to replace a defective element will then
depend on how easy it is to remove as well as the value of the toaster oven.
Step 3: Once the heating element has been removed, replace it with one of identical
rating and structure. Be very careful not to distort the shape of the new element as it is
installed. Element wires are fragile and can be damaged easily. Higher-wattage elements
are of thicker wire.

Servicing a Solenoid
The solenoid turns the electric current to the heating elements on and off. If the
heating elements stay on longer than they should and burn your food, or if opening the
appliance door turns them off, the solenoid may be defective. To test and replace a
solenoid:
Step 1: Look at the unit for visible damage and smell the area around the solenoid for
obvious damage to components.
Step 2: Use a multitester to verify your findings.
Step 3: Replace the solenoid. Simply unscrew the brackets and remove the unit.

Simple Ways of Cleaning an Oven Toaster

• Once every week or so, empty the crumbs in your toaster or toaster oven, depending
on how long you used it.
• Toasters are designed for easy crumb removal. Some toasters have slide-out crumb
trays; others have hinged doors that allow you to empty the crumbs.
• No matter what kind of toaster you have or what sort of mechanism it has for crumb
removal, always unplug the toaster before cleaning it.
• With a wet cloth, wipe around the control knobs.
• Add a dash of vinegar or squirt of dishwashing liquid to the cleaning water for more
cleaning power.
• For stainless steel toasters, polish with a stainless-steel polish, available from
supermarkets and hardware stores.

SAFETY REMINDERS IN USING AN OVEN TOASTER

1. Read carefully the instructions in the user’s/ operation/ owner’s manual before
using a toaster oven.
2. Do not touch hot surfaces. Handles and knobs are provided for the user to easily
open/close the glass door and to turn right or left the controls. Auxiliary parts are
included in the package for holding purposes.

3. Keep away the cord, plugs, or appliance from the water or other liquid to avoid
electric shock.
4. Unplug the toaster from the outlet (power source) when not in use.
5. Do not use any appliance with a damaged cord or plug.
6. Before cleaning, unplug the cord and let the unit cool down before taking off parts
for cleaning.
7. Place the appliance in a stable position.
8. Do not use metal scouring pads in cleaning a toaster oven. This can damage the
pad (buttons) and might cause an electrical hazard.
9. Use the only accessory that is recommended by the manufacturer to avoid injuries.
10. Keep at least four inches of space on all sides of the toaster oven to allow
adequate air circulation during operation.
11. In case the plug is detachable from the unit, attach the plug to the appliance
first and then plug the cord into the wall outlet. To unplug, turn the control to OFF
first, and then remove the cord by grasping and pulling out the plug. Never pull the
cord. 12. Do not use metal foil to cover the Crumb Tray or any part of the toaster
oven to avoid overheating.
13. When removing the tray or disposing of hot grease or other hot liquids extreme
caution must be observed.
14. Do not place the unnecessary item on top of the oven during operation. The unit
must be far from flammable materials (curtain, walls, and the like).
15. Always wear protective, insulated oven mitts when putting in or removing items
from the hot toaster oven.
16. Avoid scratching the glass door surface.
17. If the appliance malfunctions or has been damaged, seek technical assistance
from servicemen for inspection, repair, or adjustment.

PRE-TESTING and TROUBLESHOOTING a TOASTER OVEN

1. Determine the specific problem by asking about the symptom.
a. Ask the owner/operator of the oven toaster what is the symptom of the unit.
b. Request some details of the symptom (how does the symptom happen and how
long it has been observed).
2. Operate the device if possible. Make sure that you know how to operate an oven toaster.
If not, review the operating manual as well as the service manual (if available) of the unit
before its testing and operation.
a. If you have worked on the same unit before, check out to see if it functions in the
same way.
b. Determine the last time it has been modified/repaired.
c. You must recognize the symptom/complaint of the owner of the unit.
3. Perform a visual inspection of the unit.
a. Prepare the tools needed and remove the cover ready for inspection.
b. Apply careful physical inspection of the parts/components. (Look for burned and
broken components; Inspect for loose connections or broken wires; Check for
misaligned/ deformed parts)
4. If all looks fine, test the unit for resistance checks.

a. Get the multitester and set it at the lower range. Connect the test probes to each of
the plug terminals, the reading must be infinite having the control/s at zero position.
b. Then, adjust slowly the timer, temperature, and function knob, a decrease in
resistance should be observed upon turning the knob to the right. If this happens,
the unit might be in good condition. For safety, place one probe across the plug
terminals and the other probe to the body. There should be very high (infinite)
resistance. If resistance is observed, do not attempt to plug the unit instead solve
this first. Refer to the troubleshooting guide in this lesson.
5. Record your findings for future reference.
