and each affect and overlaps the others.
At times, one may be more prominent
than others, but neglect of any
dimension has adverse effects on
overall health. Therefore, it is essential
to help students to take care of them.
That`s why all six schools intended to
highlight the importance of all these six
health dimensions in order to improve
students’ success, results and
THE PROJECT concentration, helping them to have a
healthy lifestyle.
The need that gave this project its rationale was
that students have many problems related to
health. Students are tired and stressed and
sometimes feel bad. They have bad lifestyle
habits (poor diet/bad food choices, eating
disorders, obesity, inactivity, lack of sleep, too
much time in front of the computer, lack of
physical exercise) and this has consequences on
their performance at school.

According to a SWOT analysis from each school,

students' school results were not as good as
expected, they didn’t concentrate enough
during classes, they had problems with classes
attendance and disengagement in school, and
the worst thing was sometimes school leaving
at an early age. Partner schools intended to
make their students more sensitive to health
which was considered a state of complete
physical, mental and social wellness and not SIX DIMENSIONS OF WELLNESS
merely the absence of disease or infirmity.
Many people think about wellness in terms of Maintaining students’ health and
physical health only. Wellness is more than a harmonious development is the basic
physical health. It is a full integration of condition for an effective education, an
physical, mental, social, spiritual, emotional and education which encourages reflection,
environmental wellbeing. It is a complex creativity, trust, solidarity and movement,
dimension that contributes to the quality of life,
determining young people to spend more time
outdoors. Outdoor education and health training in
the educational process were innovative concepts
for all six partner schools. All six partners would like
to embrace the idea of improving participants’ health
and wellbeing, to spread a new healthy attitude and
style, a strong mind in a healthy body, not just to
teachers and students, but also to the local, national
and international community.

Spiritual Health

13

HEALTHY BODIES! HEALTHY MINDS! BOOKLET ON HEALTH DIMENSIONS

The term “Spiritual health” describes the state of well-
being of the person as a whole. Spiritual health is that
“it concerns your mental, behavioral, social, and
emotional well-being. It affects how you think, how
you feel and how you act. It can affect your daily lives,
your relationships, and even your biological health.
Having good mental health is not just about not having
mental problems and diseases. Your mental health is
linked to good physical health. It is also related to the
good relationships you establish with yourselves, your
family and your environment, and your ability to cope
with the daily problems of your lives. It is also related
to your ability to use your knowledge, skills and
features and to feel comfortable and peaceful.

Spiritual health is being committed to something

greater than yourself and having a set of values, principles, morals, and beliefs that provide life
with a sense of purpose and meaning, then using those principles to guide your actions.

The soul cannot be defined as a part of the body or mind. Body, mind, and spirit all affect each
other. Improved spiritual living can help contribute to the healing process. Spirituality may not
heal you, but it can help you coping with the pain and difficulties that accompany illness or other
life challenges. Spiritual health is achieved when you feel hopeful and peaceful. It can support you
as you fully experience life. Spirituality is different for everyone.

Today, spiritul health is accepted as an integral part of general health. Spiritual health problems
are of great social importance as they are common, result in disability and cause economic losses.

Sipiritul health is very important in terms of strengthening your relationships with other people
around you, adding positivity to your living space, supporting your life purpose and values, being
peaceful when connecting with others, being self-compassionate, safe and psychologically
resilient, being aware of your own actions and responsibilities.

14

HEALTHY BODIES! HEALTHY MINDS! BOOKLET ON HEALTH DIMENSIONS

Being more committed to your life purpose and values guides you to who you are as individuals.
This allows you to relate better to yourselves and to others around you. It increases your
selfawareness, which reveals a deeper connection with yourselves and how you think and act.

Spiritual health is part of balancing your life. When you take time to take care of your mental
health as part of a holistic health approach, you can achieve promotion, delegate responsibilities,
be an inclusive leader, and set goals that align with your new role. You can live a meaningful life
connected to your core values, beliefs, and morals.

The reasons that spoil spiritual health are: poverty, unemployment, adverse living conditions,
inter-family and social violence, school bullying, loss of confidence, humiliation, disrespect, lack of
confidence. They are the main reasons that affect the 'brittleness' of children and adolescents.

Mental health in children and adolescents is not simply understood as the absence of mental
disorder or symptoms. It's something wider. It is the safeguarding of the inner balance and
emotional stability that enable the individual to enjoy life, to be satisfied with their relationships,
to be creative and to evolve. If there is no spiritual health, the person may feel emotionally
unstable, struggling all the time. She can't find ways to get rid of stress. He cannot think positively
and fear can backfire in any case.

The most common spiritual disorders are the depression and anxiety.

15

HEALTHY BODIES! HEALTHY MINDS! BOOKLET ON HEALTH DIMENSIONS

Depression is a common and serious but treatable
medical illness that negatively affects how you feel,
how you think, and how you act. Depression leads to a
constant state of sadness and a lack of enjoyment in
pleasant situations. Depression can lead to a variety of
emotional and physical symptoms. People with
depression have a reduced ability to perform their
duties at home, at school, and at work. Depression is
the most common spiritual disorder among young
people aged 16-24. The prevalence of depression in
children is 3-5%. The incidence in adolescents varies
between 15-20%. Depression is a serious spiritual
depression that can last for weeks as well as being
limited to 2 days. Early loss of a parent, separation or
death of a loved one, being a woman, low
socioeconomic status, job loss, alcohol or
substance(drug) use, divorce, having a bad and
traumatic childhood, previous depression, presence of
depression in the family, some medications, hormonal
changes, and some diseases are major risk factors for
depression.

16

HEALTHY BODIES! HEALTHY MINDS! BOOKLET ON HEALTH DIMENSIONS

The country with the most depression is the UK, while the country with the lowest rate is Italy.
The biggest reason for this financial burden is that patients are unable to work and personal the
breakdown of relationships over time. In addition, there is also the cost of treatment of people
suffering from spiritual problems.

Persistent, excessive or realistic

worries, uncontrollable obsessive-compulsive
disorder, intense worry about social situation,
panic attack, phobia or other intense distress,
irrational fears and syndromes can be
characterized as anxiety cases.
People wit h anxiety disorders had an intense,
persistent state of anxiety and fear of everyday
situations. This state of extreme worry, anxiety and
panic interferes with the continuation of daily
activities. It is difficult to control and manage, and
it is not possible to predict time. Symptoms of this
condition can begin in childhood and adolescence
and continue into adulthood. Approximately 18% of
the population suffers from anxiety disorder, and it
may progress to the level of illness with the degree
of increase in the problem. A person with anxiety
always thinks about the worst-case scenario and
these thoughts are out of their control.

There are several types of anxiety disorder:

Generalized Anxiety Disorder: A feeling of extreme anxiety and tension for no apparent reason.
Panic Attack: Sudden and intense fear can cause panic attacks. In the meantime, you may feel
pain in your chest, you may experience sweat discharge in your body, and you may observe an
acceleration in your heartbeat. Sometimes the process can be so severe that you think you are
drowning or having a heart attack.
Social Anxiety Disorder: In your personal relationships, it is called the state of worrying and
stressing that others judge your actions and ridicule them.
Specific Phobias: It can manifest as a fear of heights. People with this fear may worry about
getting on a plane or living in high-rise houses.
Agoraphobia: In the crowd, when an emergency occurs, you may feel fear and anxiety because
your mobility is limited.

17

HEALTHY BODIES! HEALTHY MINDS! BOOKLET ON HEALTH DIMENSIONS

Separation Anxiety: You may be experiencing separation anxiety when you are very worried when
your loved ones leave you and you want to be in front of them all the time.
Selective Mute: While some children can communicate with their families by speaking, they
cannot speak in public. This social anxiety is called selective mutism.

The symptoms of spiritual disorder are:

✓ Insufficient sleep or restlessness during sleep
✓ Feeling anxious and restless
✓ Feeling tired, grumpy, tired, irritable, tearful, or sad most of the time
✓ The state of not enjoying the activities and
hobbies and quitting for a long time
✓ Social disorder and loss of friends
✓ Forgetfulness, loss of control or carelessness
✓ Tense muscles
✓ Rapid weight loss or gain
✓ Unexplained pain, feeling physically unwell
✓ End of desire to go to school or work
✓ Believing that you are insecure and worthless
✓ Feeling that something bad is going to happen that he can't get out of his mind
✓ Tremors in hands and feet
✓ Immediate and constant desire to cry
✓ Difficulty concentrating
✓ Digestive system problems (stomach aches, vomiting, indigestion,)

How can people get in Spiritual Health?

✓ Look for and adopt ways to improve your self-esteem
✓ Find or remember things that you enjoy doing and are usually good at.
✓ Systematically try to do something nutritious for you and think positively.

18

HEALTHY BODIES! HEALTHY MINDS! BOOKLET ON HEALTH DIMENSIONS

✓ Get rid of the perfect.
✓ Remember to always be reconciled to yourself. To believe in yourself.

People with spiritual health are more effective in their relationships with the social environment
because they are optimistic and less stressed. Your interaction with good people greatly improves
your spiritual health and gives you the opportunity to become better people overall. The social
dimension of spiritual health is very important because the human being as a social being needs
to communicate and interact with other people.

Causes of spiritual health behavior problems in school environment are parental attitudes and teacher-
student relations.
When you trust and believe in
yourself then you are less
stressed and more social and
adaptable in the school
environment. Factors
that contribute to poor
school performance are
school maturity, cowardice,
and
discouragement.

People who have spiritual health and believe in God feel better and are in better health. You
strengthen and trust what you do with the help of faith. Where there is faith there are more valid
goals for life. It is impossible to live without faith. You need faith in your lives to be effective.

Ways to improve your Spiritual Health:

✓ Pay attention to the regularity of your lifestyle.
✓ Engage in regular walking, swimming, or other sports activities.
✓ Dedicate one day of the week to a hobby you enjoy.
✓ Make sure to sleep at least 7-8 hours a day.
✓ Avoid heavy caffeine and alcohol consumption. Drink Plenty of Water.

19

HEALTHY BODIES! HEALTHY MINDS! BOOKLET ON HEALTH DIMENSIONS

✓ Take care to consume light foods and eat healthy. Reduce Sugar Consumption. Do not stay
hungry for long hours.
✓ Limit social media and internet use.
✓ Read a book or newspaper for at least half an hour every day and reduce phone calls.
✓ Listen to soft music and do relaxation exercises during the day.
✓ Travel.

It is important to feel satisfied with yourself, to be social and active with many interests, to have
clear goals and visions, to know who you are and what you want, to laugh more and leaving bad
experiences and situations behind you, to be yourselves, to be optimistic, to look ahead, to have
a healthy lifestyle and to do new things that please you and promote you.

When you have mental health then you can achieve a better future planning, with a higher chance
of success, and this is because you have the advantage of trusting yourself and performing better.

DECEMBER 2019, KARAMAN, TURKEY

Spiritual Health
The first LLT activity took place in Turkey, between 9th to 13th of December 2019, and the topic
was Spiritual Health. The mobility was realized with the participation of teachers and students
from Romania, Poland, Spain, Greece and Italy.

21

HEALTHY BODIES! HEALTHY MINDS! BOOKLET ON HEALTH DIMENSIONS

On the first day, the program started with the opening ceremony and the speech of the Turkish
headmaster. Each participant country presented information about their school, region and
country. In addition, all the participants made presentations on the results of the questionnaire
about factors influencing students’ life styles, causes for their bad results, lack of concentration,
disengagement in school and why some of the students want to leave school at an early age.

22

HEALTHY BODIES! HEALTHY MINDS! BOOKLET ON HEALTH DIMENSIONS

The art of marbling, which is used as a
relaxation purpose for spiritual peace, was also
taught to participants. Finally, a meeting for
coordinators was organized to discuss about
the activities of the week and about the next
steps of the project.

23

HEALTHY BODIES! HEALTHY MINDS! BOOKLET ON HEALTH DIMENSIONS

During the week, students and teachers participated in workshops, debates, physical exercises,
cultural events, educational trips, all of which gave participants the opportunity to improve their
spiritual health.

The second day started with a lecture given on Spiritual Health at Karatay University. The
professor talked about the causes of deterioration of spiritual health and solutions to solve these.
Participants took part in an educational visit to the museum of Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi, one of
the most important Turkish philosophers, and to Konya Butterfly Valley, to see the results of using
butterflies in spiritual relaxation. The more relaxed a person is, the higher his spiritual peace. They
learnt new things about spiritual health and Seb-I Aruz ceremony helped participants learn how
to relax with mystical music and dances.

During the third day, students from each school
presented the results of the survey based on the
subject of the project meeting (spiritual health).
Participants talked about the factors that damage
this health dimension, the things that can be done
to normalize and maintain people’s spiritual
health. They also learned how they can improve
their spiritual health through yoga, which is
considered a successful way for spiritual
relaxation and relieve stress. Dance is one of the
best ways for students to relax their spiritual
structures and maintain a spiritual health so they
were
involved in a workshop of Zumba dance in the school gym.

An individual who is mentally and spiritually relaxed is considered to have taken the first step on
the way to success. Maintaining the health and harmonious development of students, relieving

their stress, relieving them, encouraging trust, solidarity and movement are the basic conditions
of an effective education.

One of the best ways to improve people's spiritual health is to travel and go trekking in important
cultural sites, allowing to experience new cultures and customs. Walking helps build self-esteem
by reducing symptoms of stress and depression as well as anxiety. It's an uplifting experience
that's good for your mind as well as your soul. For this purpose, the fourth day was dedicated to
an educational trip to Cappadocia, which has an environment of tolerance, a spiritual structure
that has hundreds of cultures and have been a living place of people since the past. Students were
involved in pottery activities, in order to practice their skills, learn new things and improve
spiritual health. Anxiety is one of the most important causes that harm our spiritual health.
Breathing exercises are the best method to reduce the level of the anxiety so a workshop was
held on how to do breathing exercises.

During the last day of activities, students worked in
international groups and shared knowledge they
gained during the week. A questionnaire was
applied to evaluate the activities of the week. A
second coordinators’ meeting was organized in
order to plan the following activities and
responsibilities. Then, teachers had a meeting with
the director of national education to talk about the
importance of Erasmus projects for the
educational systems from each country. Students,
worked on a common presentation on how to care
about Spiritual Health including suggested
activities, examples and conclusions, illustrating
them with their own experience from the activities
they were involved in during the week.

In this project, we want to create a strong spirituality in students' and teachers' attitudes, happy
life styles, tolerance, harmony and healthy bodies. To achieve all this, participating schools will
organize and coordinate activities related to these six dimensions of health: physical, intellectual,
social, spiritual, emotional and environmental. We want to encourage students and young people
in general to play and learn together, to ensure their healthy development, to enrich their cultural
knowledge and also to increase the quality of education services and to offer a healthy life to
them.

that they are mentally healthy, they believe that they live in a religious society and have
connections with God. They feel joyful with spiritual relaxation by worshiping. Spirituality is
effective in the formation of identity. Spiritual values and beliefs are a tool in solving problems
and beliefs help their health. Spiritual beliefs are used as a method of coping with stress. Everyone
has a purpose and they believe that they are honest, respectful and reliable. The majority of
students they are aware of their own values and can talk about these values. They are tolerant of
other beliefs and values. They trust other people as forgiving, harmonious, and have a sense of
identity. They are happy with life and have inner peace.

As a result, we can say that they are at a good level in terms of spiritual
health. However, they can participate in using the art of marbling,
yoga, cultural activities, educational trips, debates, and strengthening
their individual beliefs in order to make them better.

Intellectual Health is vitally important in creating sustainable health

and happiness. It is what pushes you forward, empowers you to learn from adversity, and think
critically as you navigate life (and not just intellectually, but also emotionally, physically, and
spiritually). As you activate and strengthen Intellectual Health, you are able to create, innovate,
and grow in unimaginable ways.

Intellectual Health refers to being open to new ideas and

experiences, and the desire to increase understanding, improve
skills, and continually challenge yourself. Additionally, it connects
to maximizing your creative potential. Intellectual wellness means
striving toward good mental health, continued intellectual
growth, and creativity in life. This can include continued learning,
practicing problem solving, improving verbal skills, keeping
abreast of social and political issues, and reading books,
magazines, and newspapers.

Understanding Intellectual Health and its value in life is meaningless without action and
application. So here are a few healthy habits connected to thriving Intellectual Health.

46

HEALTHY BODIES! HEALTHY MINDS! BOOKLET ON HEALTH DIMENSIONS

➢ Cultivate a love for learning and discovery
➢ Possess a growth mindset and hold strong to the truth that you are
always cable of doing more
➢ Learn to view challenges and struggles as opportunities for growth
➢ Set S.M.A.R.T. goals and exercising deliberate practice in working towards goals ➢ Live by a
standard of taking ownership and responsibility for learning

Intellectual wellness is important because it helps people achieve a

more balanced life. Exploring new ideas and understanding a variety of
subjects makes you more mindful and a more well-rounded person.
Curiosity and exploration are sparked by intellectual wellness – it is this
amazing circular pathway. The more knowledge someone has, the more
likely they are to be interested in learning more and in learning about new
things.

So, when you seek out new experiences and gain new knowledge, you are expanding your
intellectual wellness. Then, you become even more likely to want to seek further knowledge and
experiences. This curiosity is important because it motivates you to try new things and develop
an understanding of the relationship between yourself, other people, and the world around you.
When someone is aware of other cultures, people, and situations, they are more sympathetic to
other people’s experiences. It makes people more empathetic of others, which, in turn, makes
them more likely to be concerned about how their actions (or inactions) affect the world, making
them a better global citizen.

Intellectual disability involves problems with general mental abilities.

Intellectual disability is identified by problems in both intellectual
and adaptive functioning. Intellectual functioning is measured with
individually administered and psychometrically valid,
comprehensive, culturally appropriate, psychometrically sound tests
of intelligence. While a specific full-scale IQ test score is no longer
required for diagnosis, standardized testing is used as part of
diagnosing the condition. A full-scale IQ score of around 70 to 75
indicates a significant limitation in intellectual functioning. However,
the IQ score must be interpreted in the context of the person’s difficulties in general mental
abilities. Moreover, scores on subtests can vary considerably so that the full-scale IQ score may

47

HEALTHY BODIES! HEALTHY MINDS! BOOKLET ON HEALTH DIMENSIONS

not accurately reflect overall intellectual functioning. Therefore, clinical judgment is needed in
interpreting the results of IQ tests.
Three areas of adaptive functioning are considered:
➢ Conceptual – language, reading, writing, math, reasoning, knowledge, memory.
➢ Social – empathy, social judgment, communication skills, the ability to follow rules and the
ability to make and keep friendships.
➢ Practical – independence in areas such as personal care, job responsibilities, managing money,
recreation, and organizing school and work tasks.

There are many different causes of intellectual disability. It can be

associated with a genetic syndrome, such as Down syndrome or
Fragile X syndrome. It may develop following an illness such as
meningitis, whooping cough or measles; may result from head
trauma during childhood; or may result from exposure to toxins
such as lead or mercury. Other factors that may contribute to
intellectual disability include brain malformation, maternal
disease and environmental influences (alcohol, drugs or other
toxins). A variety of labor- and delivery-related events, infection during pregnancy and problems
at birth, such as not getting enough oxygen, can also contribute.

Intellectual disability is a life-long condition. However,

early and ongoing intervention may
improve functioning and enable the
person to thrive throughout their lifetime.
Underlying medical or genetic conditions and
co-occurring conditions frequently add to the
complex lives of people with intellectual
disability. Services for people with
intellectual disabilities and their families can provide
support to allow full inclusion in the community. Many
different types of supports and services can help, such as:
➢ Early intervention (infants and toddlers)
➢ Special education
➢ Family support (for example, respite care support groups for families)
➢ Transition services from childhood to adulthood

48

HEALTHY BODIES! HEALTHY MINDS! BOOKLET ON HEALTH DIMENSIONS

➢ Vocational programs
➢ Day programs for adults
➢ Housing and residential options
➢ Case management
Tips for Parents
➢ Ask for help, learn about your child’s disability
➢ Connect with other parents of children with disabilities
➢ Be patient; learning may come slower for your child
➢ Encourage independence and responsibility
➢ Educate yourself on the educational services your child deserves
➢ Learn the laws that are written to help your child live their best life
➢ Look for opportunities in your community for social, recreational and sports activities

It is important to gain and maintain intellectual wellness because it expands knowledge and skills
in order to live a stimulating, successful life. In order to improve intellectual wellness, it is
important to value creativity, curiosity, and lifelong learning.

➢ Development of good study skills and time management

➢ Ability to challenge yourself to see all sides of an issue
➢ Becoming a critical thinker
➢ Development of your own ideas, views, and opinions
➢ Exposing yourself to new ideas, people, and beliefs that are different from your own
➢ Become aware of who you are and what you value
➢ Think clearly

➢ Have more positive thoughts than negative thoughts

➢ Able to pay attention
➢ Engage in activities to increase knowledge
➢ Seek new challenges

Intellectual Wellness can be explored as follows:

49

HEALTHY BODIES! HEALTHY MINDS! BOOKLET ON HEALTH DIMENSIONS

Improve Study Skills
• Review study materials within 24 hours of class to keep it fresh in your memory
• Take notes while you read, while in class, and focus on more than what is written on the board
• Form a study group session with other people in your class
• Study in a quiet environment that will not distract you
• Colour coding helps trigger memory - keep one topic per colour
• Find innovative ways to study that work for you

Improve Time Management

off
Make a "To-Do" list that allows you to cross

completed tasks as you go.

tackle the most important first.

• Prioritize tasks in order of importance and

• Learn to say no to social activities sometimes - remember what is important to get done.

• Cut work hours, money is important, but working too much can cut into your study time

• Multi-task within your limits.

Remove Objectivity
• Learn there is more than one way to do something
• There isn't always a "right" answer, but sometimes there are multiple answers
• Stay open-minded to new ideas, insights, thoughts, expressions, and values

50

HEALTHY BODIES! HEALTHY MINDS! BOOKLET ON HEALTH DIMENSIONS

• Expose yourself to difference

Improve Critical Thinking

• Be actively engaged in conversation, readings, and classrooms - think about what is happening
• Ask questions to yourself or others as you reflect
• Challenge the norm, don't take an answer for what it is without agreeing upon it yourself
Find patterns and connections to examples that relate to your life Keep your brain active,
thinking, and questioning.

You often think of the mind and body as two separate entities, but many studies have shown that
intellectual wellness is just as important as physical wellness. Intellectual wellness includes your
social, emotional, and psychological health.

Other Ways to Increase Your Intellectual Wellness

READ
Pick up a classic novel or the latest on the bestseller
list. Have a topic you’ve always wanted to learn more
about? Order a book or download one to read at your
leisure on your tablet or desktop computer. You can
also borrow digital books from your local library.
Reading, especially something you enjoy, can
improve your intellect by stretching your mind to
think about things you normally don’t think about!
Always challenge yourself to learn something new to
keep your brain active and be curious to what is
unknown to you.
ATTEND SEMINARS OR WORKSHOPS
This will help you gain new ideas that are seldom included in the books you buy. You will also
improve your social wellness by meeting people and gaining new friends.

LEARN A FOREIGN LANGUAGE

It can be beneficial to your intellectual health and your employment prospects. When learning
different ways to communicate, your mind expands.

51

HEALTHY BODIES! HEALTHY MINDS! BOOKLET ON HEALTH DIMENSIONS

JOURNALS
Taking the time to write down thoughts can help those who struggle with expressing their feelings
or in general for anyone who is trying to make sense of what they are feeling inside. Being able to
identify your feelings and understanding yourself more and your actions increase intellectual
wellness by exposing your mind to deeper thinking.

BE CREATIVE
When there is an activity to do, challenge yourself to make something new and different, not the
one you are accustomed to, to see how far your mental ability can go.

EXPERIENCE THE ARTS

Attend and/or participate in cultural events. Music, the arts, dance and other cultural activities
can help express creativity and stimulate your brain in new ways.

DEBATE WITH A FRIEND

Focusing attention on information that is different than your beliefs
can improve intellectual wellness. Naturally, you tend to only focus
your attention on opinions, beliefs, and facts that hold true to your
viewpoints. When you expose the mind to opposing ideas, it expands
the mind to grasp new information.
BE SOCIAL
You are social beings hardwired for connection. That means you need to spend time engaging
with others to thrive as you learn how to get a life you can enjoy. Studies have shown that people
who socialize often have higher levels of happiness than those who don’t.

EXERCISE
Not only is exercise good for your heart and body, but it can also help improve another major
muscle, your brain. In a study done at the University of British Columbia, researchers found that
regular aerobic exercise—the kind that gets your heart and sweat glands pumping—appears to
boost the size of the hippocampus, the brain area involved in verbal memory and learning,
sharpens your memory, and helps you feel better overall.

52

HEALTHY BODIES! HEALTHY MINDS! BOOKLET ON HEALTH DIMENSIONS

EAT A WELL-BALANCED DIET
Proper nutrition is significant for the brain to function well
and avoid mental stresses that may cause additional health
problems.

SLEEP
Your brain needs time to rest and repair. Evidence shows that your brain functions best when you
get at least 7 hours of sleep each night.

VISITS AND WALKING

Not all learning experiences come from books. Sometimes it takes interaction with the world
around you to stimulate your mind. There are plenty of ways to boost your intellectual curiosity
without spending all day at the library: you can go to a museum, go on a nature walk or simply
explore a place you have never been to before (travel).
People feel great after going for a walk. It’s an uplifting and invigorating experience that’s as good
for your heart as it is for your mind. Going for a walk can help improve your mental wellness. As
a matter of fact, studies show that walking helps build self-esteem by reducing rates of obesity,
stress, and ultimately, symptoms of both depression and anxiety.

PLAY A GAME
Board games and cards are popularly known as leisure activities. They
can also help with your intellectual wellness. It makes no difference
whether you are playing alone or you are playing with others. As long as
your mind is thinking, improvements are being made.

DO PUZZLES
Crosswords and Sudoku are leisure activities that have proved to increase intellectual wellness.
Working through puzzles or finding words in patterns uses a great amount of brain power.
Increasing your ability to work through these activities can maintain and build your intellectual
wellness.

53

HEALTHY BODIES! HEALTHY MINDS! BOOKLET ON HEALTH DIMENSIONS

PLAY AN INSTRUMENT/LISTEN GOOD MUSIC
Music has a powerful impact on your minds. Playing a musical instrument can increase
intellectual wellness by learning how to create sounds, make patterns, and emote through music.

Also, it is found therapeutic to listen to positive music because it calms the emotions and
decreases the risk of stress.

WATCH POSITIVE TV PROGRAMS AND VIDEOS

Choose informative videos and not the ones that corrupt the mind or infuse negative ideas. This
way, you will absorb positive energy that enhances the ability to think.

When you get down to it, intellectual wellness is about being curious about the world and
expanding your horizons. The more you learn, and the more you share your knowledge with
others, the better you do for yourself and the world. It allows you to become a more wellrounded
person with knowledge about all kinds of things. It keeps you curious and interested in things you
do not know and in the people and places around you. Expanding your intellectual wellness makes
you a better version of yourself.
Debates, physical exercises, cultural activities, educational trips can offer people the opportunity
to improve their intellectual health. Students can play games, solve puzzles and riddles in order to
improve their intellectual health. Through playing, the child begins to accumulate a lot of new
knowledge. As one plays, the imagination is developed. A rich imagination is a proof of a
welltrained intelligence. Maintaining the health and harmonious development of students are the
basic conditions for an effective education, an education that encourages reflection, creativity,
confidence, solidarity and movement, causing young people to spend more time outdoors.
Intellectual dimension of your health involves one's intellectual skills, creativity, cultural activity,
learning abilities, problem solving abilities, interests, curiosity, helping one to become a
personality with his own views and understanding of the world.

There are many benefits that come with practicing intellectual wellness. Some of these benefits
include: tolerance and respect for others, a sense of dignity and belonging, enhancing memory
power, improving how one expresses their thoughts and a sense of purpose and self- confidence.
Nevertheless, a number intellectual developments can be improved like: memory, moral
development, problem solving, language development and abstract thinking.

Intellectual Health
OCTOBER 2021, SUCEAVA, ROMANIA

The second mobility of our project was hosted by “Spiru Haret” National College of Computer
Science, Suceava, Romania, between the 18th and 22nd of October 2021. During this mobility,
participants discussed about Intellectual Health. Due to the pandemic situation, this activity was
attended physically by teachers and students from Turkey and Poland and virtually from Spain,

40

HEALTHY BODIES! HEALTHY MINDS! BOOKLET ON HEALTH DIMENSIONS

Greece and Italy. The educational activities were carried out in a way allowing to virtually
participate for Greek, Italian and Spanish partners.

On the first day, the participants took part in the

official opening, the ice-breaking activities,
presented the results of the
questionnaire based on intellectual health and
they took part in a debate which was held by Mr.
Adrian Marmeliuc (psychologist). They discussed
about the importance of Intellectual Health and
how this can be improved. Finally, a management
meeting was organized where coordinators and
teachers discussed about the activities of the

week.

57

HEALTHY BODIES! HEALTHY MINDS! BOOKLET ON HEALTH DIMENSIONS

During the week, students and teachers took part in debates, physical exercises, cultural activities,
educational trips, all these offering participants the opportunity to improve their intellectual
health.

The second day, participants from

each country made presentations on
Intellectual health and they talked about the
importance of intellectual health and the steps
that can be done in order to increase their
intellectual health. Then students participated
in the activity “Debate with a Friend” where
exposed their minds to opposing ideas, focusing
their attention on different opinions.
They continued with physical exercises
coordinated by Mr. Iulian Bejinariu, PE teacher.
Exercise is good for your heart and body, but it
can also

help improve another major muscle, your brain. The second half of the day was dedicated to
exploring cultural activities and learning
something new about Suceava, the Village
Museum and the Fortress.

The third day of the activities was entitled

“Improving your Intellectual health through
visits and walking”. It was an uplifting and
invigorating experience good for mind and
hearth, building self-esteem in the same time,
releasing stress, depression and anxiety.

59

60

HEALTHY BODIES! HEALTHY MINDS! BOOKLET ON HEALTH DIMENSIONS

On the fourth day, students took part in different
activities like “Play a game”, where they played
board games, “Do puzzle”, where they played
crosswords and Sudoku, “Riddles” and "Be social"
focusing on socializing, raising their level of
happiness and sharing things about themselves and
their countries. All these activities are leisure
activities that help to maintain and build intellectual
health but also in the socialization of students.

We started from the idea that through playing, the

child begins to accumulate a lot of new knowledge. As one plays, the imagination is developed. A
rich imagination is a proof of a welltrained intelligence. Maintaining the health and harmonious
development of students are the basic conditions for an effective education, an education that
encourages reflection, creativity, confidence, solidarity and movement, causing young people to

61

HEALTHY BODIES! HEALTHY MINDS! BOOKLET ON HEALTH DIMENSIONS

Intellectual dimension of our health involves intellectual skills, creativity, cultural activity, learning
abilities, problem solving abilities, interests, curiosity, helping one to become a personality with
his own views and understanding of the world.

Last day of activities was dedicated to an activity entitled “My Journal”, where students took time
to write down thoughts, expressed feelings, exposing their minds to deeper feelings. Students
presented their journals with thoughts, impressions, pictures and videos about all the activities
they took part in during the week. Finally, a management meeting was organized, where teachers
evaluated the activities and talked about the next steps of the project, an evaluation questionnaire
was applied and certificates of attendance were awarded.

62

HEALTHY BODIES! HEALTHY MINDS! BOOKLET ON HEALTH DIMENSIONS

There are many benefits that come with practicing intellectual wellness. Some of these benefits
include: tolerance and respect for others, a sense of dignity and belonging, enhancing memory
power, improving how one expresses their thoughts and a sense of purpose and self-confidence.
A number intellectual developments can be improved like: memory, moral development, problem
solving, language development and abstract thinking. Intellectual ability also affects learning. For
example, some people have an easier time remembering information than others. Some students
can readily understand abstract concepts, while others need concrete examples.

Everyone has different intellectual strengths and weaknesses. Everyone has understanding,
resources, and interests on which to build. Teachers have a critical role in assisting learners to
engage their understanding, building on learner`s understandings, correcting misconceptions, and
observing and engaging with learners during the processes of learning.

Intellectual Health is important because it helps people achieve a more balanced life. Exploring
new ideas and understanding a variety of subjects makes you more mindful and a more
wellrounded person. Having an optimal level of intellectual wellness inspires curiosity and
exploration.
In this project we want to promote a new attitude and a healthy lifestyle, a strong mind in a healthy
body, not only teachers and students, but also in the local, national and international community.
To achieve all this, the participating schools will organize and coordinate activities related to these
six dimensions of health: physical, intellectual, social, spiritual, emotional and environmental. We
will encourage students and young people in general to play and learn together, to ensure their

63

healthy development, to enrich their cultural knowledge and, in addition, to increase the quality
of educational services, giving participants a healthy living.

Global warming, the Greta Thunberg’s protests,
the attention that the 2030 Agenda has placed on
sustainability issues, and all those initiatives that

have led not only people, but also individual states and international organizations to focus their
attention on the relationship between man and

the environment, have now turned the spotlight on how closely the environment in which we live is
related to the dimension of well-being.

Environmental Health refers to aspects of human health (including quality of life) that are determined
by physical, chemical, biological, social
and psychosocial factors in the environment.

74

HEALTHY BODIES! HEALTHY MINDS! BOOKLET ON HEALTH DIMENSIONS

nmen
Environmental Health
You need safe, healthy and supportive environments for good health. The environment in which
you live is a major determinant of your state of health. You depend on it for energy and for the
needed materials to sustain life, such as: clean air, safe drinking water, nutritious food and safe
places to live.

More and more often in recent years you hear about the problems related to the environment
and that something must definitely be done about them. The problem is not today, nor did it
suddenly appear one day. It is a result of human intervention. The great development of industry
and chemistry has resulted in the production and gradual accumulation in the environment of a
huge number of substances.

Environmental well-being is in fact a complex system that can be defined by many interdependent
components in which human beings are both passive and active variables, since they are affected
by the environment that surrounds them, but are also an important cause of environmental
changes. Generally speaking, however, it is possible to distinguish two types of environment.

Whatever environment we are talking about, it is a fundamental part of human well-being to live
in an environment that is healthy and attentive to the needs not only of the individual, but also of
the health of the planet, as the one great environment truly shared by all mankind.

75

HEALTHY BODIES! HEALTHY MINDS! BOOKLET ON HEALTH DIMENSIONS

Environmental well-being means a healthy and unpolluted environment: clean air, drinkable
water, organic food, sustainable agriculture, the use of natural materials to make clothes,
cosmetics, furniture and everyday objects in general, up to the use of renewable energy and
limiting CO2 production, are all aspects that help to maintain a healthy environment, and
therefore healthy human beings; in fact, it has been shown that there is a very close link between
certain diseases and a polluted environment: Just think of all the cases of cancer linked to areas
affected by nuclear radiation (Chernobyl, Hiroshima and Nagasaki), or areas where toxic waste is
illegally buried (Terra dei Fuochi), or areas where the extensive use of pesticides implies serious
genetic diseases in the population. Other important consequences of environmental pollution for
life on the planet are: the increase in the average temperature of the planet, climate change, ozon
hole, the melting of the ice at the poles and of course the rise of the sea level. However, there are
less serious, but still significant, implications, such as the high percentage of people suffering from
respiratory problems in urban areas with high CO2 and fine dust levels, or the higher incidence of
stress and sleep disorders in areas with high noise levels.

Also, environmental well-being concerns every single space in which human beings find
themselves living: their homes, workplaces, schools, practically all the places that can be defined
as indoor. These are more or less shared spaces where human beings must necessarily live, and
which must therefore be comfortable and safe, with very precise parameters: temperature,

76

HEALTHY BODIES! HEALTHY MINDS! BOOKLET ON HEALTH DIMENSIONS

humidity and air quality, noise level, light level, absence of physical, chemical and biological
hazards, and finally ergonomic equipment, are all fundamental elements in determining whether
an environment is healthy and comfortable or not.
Human health has not been unaffected by what is happening in the environment. The obvious
conclusion is that if you manage to protect the environment, you also protect your health.

Ways to protect Environmental Health

❖ Reduce, reuse, and recycle. Cut down on ❖ Volunteer. Volunteer for cleanups in
what you throw away. Follow the three "R's" to your community. You can get involved
conserve natural resources and landfill space. in protecting your watershed, too.

❖ Educate. When you further your own

education, you can help others understand
the importance and value of our natural
resources.

77

HEALTHY BODIES! HEALTHY MINDS! BOOKLET ON HEALTH DIMENSIONS

❖ Conserve water. The less water you use,
the less runoff and wastewater that
eventually end up in the ocean.

❖ Choose sustainable.

❖ Shop wisely. Buy less plastic and bring a reusable❖ Use long-lasting light bulbs. Energy
shopping bag. efficient light bulbs reduce greenhouse gas
emissions. Also flip the light switch off when you leave
the room!

78

HEALTHY BODIES! HEALTHY MINDS! BOOKLET ON HEALTH DIMENSIONS

❖ Plant a tree. Trees provide food and oxygen. They help save energy, clean the air, and help combat
climate change.

❖ Don't send chemicals into our waterways.

Choose non-toxic chemicals in the home and office.

Bike more. Drive less. Prefer public transport and the bicycle. Βuy a hybrid vehicle, or better yet,
one that runs on fully electric.

Sometimes you think that at home it is better. But think inside the house there are cooking fumes,
cigarette smoke, animal hair, insecticides, viruses from people who are sick, etc. All these greatly
burden the air of the house, which let you not forget is much smaller than the outside
environment. Remember how much cigarette smoke harms your health. The substances present
in the smoke don’t differ significantly from the substances present in the polluted cloud of cities.
Remember the great importance of refreshing the air of the house, by opening the windows.

use of less fertilizers. You significantly protect your
health if you use as few packaged products as possible.
So you get less preservatives that are definitely present
in these foods so that they can be stored for a long time.
The same goes for fast food.
They contain, among other things, many chemicals. Also, think about the origin of your purchases.
Try to buy organic products, or at least those that are made with less harmful substances. Finally,
it has been found that the many fertilizers used in crops are more concentrated in the skin of the
fruit than inside it. So it seems safer to wash and clean the fruit and not eat it with its skin.

Whatever has happened in the environment you can change it. It is certain that the laws of the
countries are very important, which limit the emission of gaseous pollutants from industries, the
pollution of water from garbage and waste, the reckless use of any fertilizer or pesticide in crops.
But it is equally certain that each has their own personal responsibility. The daily economy of
water, the restriction of car use, your responsible attitude as consumers, the constant information

are just some of the things you can do to protect the health of the planet and your own.

Environmental Health
DECEMBER 2021, VITERBO, ITALY

82

HEALTHY BODIES! HEALTHY MINDS! BOOKLET ON HEALTH DIMENSIONS

The third LTT activity took place between the 13th to the17th of December, 2021, in “ITE Paolo
Savi”, Viterbo, Italy, where participants discussed about Environmental Health (green economy,
protection of ecosystems, renewable energies, 3R). The school welcomed students and teachers
from Poland, Turkey, Spain and Romania in person, while the delegation from Greece was able to
participate virtually because of Covid-19 restrictions in their country and because of the pandemic
situation. The educational activities were carried out in a way allowing the Greek partner to
participate. The Italian coordinator sent Greek partners links about all the places the others
visited.

Environmental Health can have an important impact on our health and wellbeing. We need safe,
healthy and supportive environments for good health. We depend on the environment for energy
and the materials needed to sustain life, such as: clean air, safe drinking water, nutritious food,
safe places to live. So our students talked for different problems connected to our environment
like air pollution, recycling, excessive use of resources, plastic pollution, and they took part in
debates in which they found solutions to all these problems. We focused our attention on
sustainability, in order to guarantee and ensure a peaceful existence to the future generations.
The week alternated moments of confrontation, workshop activities and cultural moments,
allowing teachers and students to exchange views.

83

The first day started with a welcome ceremony
and introductory speech by the headmistress.
The Italian students presented the school, the
city, the county and the main
tourist attractions of the area. Α series of
icebreaking activities followed to encourage
interaction between students. A management
meeting was organized where
coordinators and teachers discussed about
the activities of the week. Participants
exchanged information about their schools and
daily life. As a result, students improved their self
confidence in public speaking. In the second part
of the morning the students were engaged in a
series of sports activities in the

school gym, organized by the PE

teacher.

In the afternoon all the students were divided into

groups to build a "Rock Garden", a representation
of the flags of the participating countries with
recycled materials (wooden boxes and painted
stones). Originally they were
supposed to use potted flowers, but as the
mobility was moved to winter it was not possible
to use fresh plants. The afternoon ended with a
treasure hunt through the streets and squares of
the Viterbo, in order participants discover
Viterbo, an old medieval town, and its history. The

best group won a gadget but the competition was important because it allowed the pupils to
interact, take an interest in the history of the town and pay attention to some specific details.
It was a funny way to learn and improve.

During the second day, a lecture was held by a university professor, Ms. Francesca Lotti on the
importance of water in healthy ecosystems. Afterwards, participants watched a video about the
Santa Maria in Gradi complex (a university building that houses a museum center) and about Villa
Lante (a historic garden). Next the guests were led to a tour of the University of Tuscia to visit the

headquarters of Santa Maria in Gradi complex. In the afternoon the delegations visited the
splendid Villa Lante and admired one of the most famous Italian Mannerist gardens. A unique
architectural complex, surrounded by nature, whose design on a hilly slope exploits the natural
force of gravity to create a completely self-sufficient hydraulic system.

The third day, the delegations presented their
works on their results of the questionnaire
about environmental health, after which the
students were divided into groups for a debate
on habits that help the env ironment in
everyday life. Also, all delegations produced
presentations on the concept of environmental
well-being.

In the afternoon, the students had an hour of physical activity and soon after they visited the
Museum of the “ Facchini of Santa Rosa “, dedicated to a local event that is on the list to become
a Unesco heritage site. The Greek participants watched related video.

The fourth day was dedicated to some educational trips (visit to Rome) to teach students how to
care about the environmental health and to discuss about how important this is for our wellbeing.
Rome offers a great variety of architectural heritage from any period, even if the old part is by far
the best known. Amongst all the enormous heritage of the past we chose to visit the Baths of

Diocleziano. The Romans were very fond of the psychophysical well being produced by spa
treatment and in the past they used also to visit the thermal Spa in Viterbo. This provides a very
interesting link between proper land and water management involving environmental health the
Romans were very much aware of. We also enjoyed visiting the Imperial Forum, Coliseum, Saint
Peter etc.

During the last day of activities, students, divided into groups, continued to debate on the
importance of environmental health, reported their reflections and suggestions in presentations
that form a booklet of good practices. Finally, each group presented their booklet to the other
groups. A management meeting was organized and an evaluation questionnaire was applied. The
headmistress handed out certificates of participation.

The last evening a dinner with typical dishes of the Italian tradition is served to the participants
and close the evening with a contemporary dance show at the historic theater of the city, the
Union Theater.

Being involved in the activities of this mobility, offered students the chance to socialise, share
happy moments together, learn new things about the others and about the topic of the meeting,
Environmental Health, an important dimension of our health. The activities offered a lot of food
for thought.
Environmental health is the branch of public health that focuses on the relationships between
people and their environment, promotes human health and wellbeing and fosters healthy and
safe communities. Environmental health is a key part of any comprehensive public health system.

The ITE Paolo Savi chose the environmental dimension due to the economic vocation of the school.
Nowadays any analysis of the economy and economics must address the question of sustainability,

93

HEALTHY BODIES! HEALTHY MINDS! BOOKLET ON HEALTH DIMENSIONS

with a focus on how it is possible to guarantee and ensure a peaceful existence to the future
generations without them paying for the mistakes of current and past generations. Humans have
always considered the Earth to be an infinite treasure to be plundered, but it is a closed system
and has a specific carrying capacity called ecological footprint. If we do not take care of our Earth
and begin to use its resources adequately and if we do not stop filling it with waste it will end in a
disaster. Actually a healthy Environment is fundamental for all forms of life, not only for the
humans but for all the living creatures. We cannot keep thinking to be able to survive without a
global vision of the well-being starting and including the ecosystems and natural resources.

Physical Health
Physical health consists of the well-being of the body and
the optimal functioning of the organism of individuals, that
is, it is a general condition of people who are in good
physical, mental, and emotional condition and who do not
suffer from any type of disease.

Traditional definitions of physical health prior to the onset

of modern medicine would have considered someone
physically healthy if he or she was not stricken with a
serious illness. With modern medical innovations came
longer life spans, which changed the way we define physical
health. Today's definition can consider everything ranging
from the absence of disease to fitness level.

Physical health is the state of being free from an illness or

an injury. It can cover a wide range of areas including
healthy diet, healthy weight, dental health, personal
hygiene and sleep. Physical health is vital for overall
wellbeing.

But physical health is not only absence of physical damage, disease or disability, but the state of
being physically well, feeling physically sufficient and good, and having a sufficient and quality
level of daily life activity.

104

HEALTHY BODIES! HEALTHY MINDS! BOOKLET ON HEALTH DIMENSIONS

While physical health is made up of many components, here are some key areas to address:
Physical activity - includes strength, flexibility and endurance
Nutrition and diet - includes nutrient intake, fluid intake and healthy digestion
Alcohol and drugs - includes abstaining from or reducing the consumption of these substances
Medical self-care - includes treating minor illnesses or injuries and seeking emergency care when
needed
Rest and sleep - includes periodic rest and relaxation, along with high quality sleep

Most healthy children and adults need to be active on a daily basis. This should be a combination
of both leisurely physical activity and structured exercise. Examples of leisurely physical activity
include hiking, cycling and walking. Examples of more structured forms of exercise include
strength and endurance training, running and sports.

Physical activity and exercise can have immediate and long-term health benefits. Regular physical
activity can improve health and reduce the risk of developing several diseases and premature
death.

105

HEALTHY BODIES! HEALTHY MINDS! BOOKLET ON HEALTH DIMENSIONS

Benefits of Physical Activity
Builds and maintains healthy bones, muscles & joints
Improves strength and endurance
Reduces feelings of stress, anxiety & depression
Helps control weight/reduces the risk of obesity
Improves blood pressure and cholesterol levels
Promotes psychological well-being
Improves quality of sleep

Physical inactivity is the fourth most important risk factor for mortality worldwide and is a key risk
factor for noncommunicable diseases, such as cardio-vascular disease, cancer and diabetes.

Health professionals and researchers recommend:

30 minutes of moderate physical activity on most days of the week, preferably everyday –
decrease your risk for some chronic disease
60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity to lose weight (keep an eye on foods)
60-90 minutes to maintain after weight loss.

With a little creativity and planning, even the person with the busiest schedule can make room for

Regular Activities to Maintain Physical Health

Daily Exercise and Weight Control
✓ Park the car farther away from your destination.
✓ Take the stairs instead of the elevator.
✓ Play sports.
✓ Take fitness breaks.
✓ Perform gardening or home repair activities.
✓ Exercise while watching TV.

Healthy Eating
A well-balanced diet should contain
carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins and
minerals. Restriction of specific nutrients
should only be done under the supervision
of an authorized healthcare professional.
The liquid, ideally in the form of pure water,
should be consumed regularly. Meals and
snacks s hould be consumed throughout the
day and portion sizes should be reasonable.
Follow the food pyramid. It will lead you to
living a healthier life.
physical activity. For many folks, before or after work or meals is often an available time to cycle,
walk, or play. Think about your weekly or daily schedule and look for or make opportunities to be
more active.

107

HEALTHY BODIES! HEALTHY MINDS! BOOKLET ON HEALTH DIMENSIONS

Drink more water
✓ Water carries nutrients to all cells in our body and
oxygen to our brain.
✓ Water allows the body to absorb and assimilate
minerals, vitamins, amino acids, glucose, and other
substances.
✓ Water flushes out toxins and waste.
✓ Water helps to regulate body temperature.

Not Alcohol, Smoke and Drugs

Substances that alter mood or other bodily processes
should be limited or avoided. Those who are addicted
or have other health risks should consider
abstaining from these substances altogether.

Medical self-care
Schedule regular medical appointments to perform
general check-ups and to avoid or detect possible
diseases.
Basic items, such as pain relievers, should be easily
accessible from home. Prolonged cough, fever or
other illnesses should be treated through primary
care. Emergency treatment should be sought when
symptoms are significant or life-threatening. Rest and sleep
While regular activity is essential for

108

HEALTHY BODIES! HEALTHY MINDS! BOOKLET ON HEALTH DIMENSIONS

physical health, giving the body a chance
to rest is just as important. Spending time relaxing
or taking short naps can help rejuvenate the body.
Sleep should take place in a quiet, dark
environment and last about 7-9 hours. Sleep that is
consistently much shorter or longer than this
duration or is of poor quality may need to be
treated by a health professional.

Maintain good hygiene

✓ Brush your teeth twice a day,
✓ Keep yourself clean and bath often,
✓ Wash your face, body and hair,
✓ Clip your finger nails and toe nails often.

The mind and body are not separate. What affects one, affects the other. Mental and physical
health are fundamentally linked. There are multiple associations between mental health and
chronic physical conditions that significantly impact people’s quality of life, demands on health
care and other publicly funded services, and generate consequences to society.

The mobility offered its participants a wide variety of activities allowing to both learn and practise
methods of caring about Physical Health. All the planned activities were intended to both show
the theoretical and practical sides of physical health care. Participants, students and teachers, had
the opportunity to learn and share their experiences on international level, compare the results
of researches carried out, draw conclusions and present their findings.

On the first day, all partners presented the effects of their local work activities and showed
presentations on the topic “What is Physical Health?”. Each delegation also had the opportunity
to teach the other participants dances, popular in their own countries, which certainly helped
everyone break the ice. They also participated in modern dances workshops with a dance trainer,
Mr. Adam Berkowicz. The Greek and the Turkish team took part in these activities, practicing these
dances even if they were online. A management meeting was organized where coordinators and
teachers discussed about the activities of the week.

opportunity to share experiences and knowledge within the topic on international level. All
participants learnt about healthy diets and exercises supporting individual fitness. Thanks to the
variety of activities, they participated in are able to select and apply some of their findings in their
own lives and thus improve their own health.

Physical health is defined as the condition of your body, taking into consideration everything from
the absence of disease to fitness level. Physical wellbeing involves pursuing a healthful lifestyle to
decrease the risk of disease. Maintaining physical fitness, for example, can protect and develop

the endurance of a person`s breathing and heart function, muscular strength, flexibility, and body
composition.

Experts widely consider exercise, good nutrition, relaxation and sleep crucial to healthy living.
While these so-called “four pillars” of good health help keep your body running, they also do
wonders for your emotional well-being. Students who are physically active tend to have better
grades, school attendance, cognitive performance like memory, and classroom behavior's. Higher
physical activity and physical fitness levels are associated with improved cognitive performance
like concentration and memory among students.

Good physical health plays a very important role in the daily life of students, it makes them happier
and will make them live longer. As a result, they have to improve their physical health through a
variety of activities because this has plenty of benefits to their mind and body. Moreover, regular
physical activities can help keep their thinking, learning, and judgment skills sharp as they age. It
can also reduce your risk of depression and anxiety and help them sleep better.
Emotional health is an important part of overall health
(which includes physical, emotional,
intellectual, social, and spiritual aspects). People who
are emotionally healthy are in control of their thoughts,
feelings, and behaviors. They’re able to
in perspective and bounce back from setbacks. They
cope with life’s challenges. They can keep problems
feel good about themselves and have
good relationships.
Being emotionally healthy doesn’t mean you’re happy all the time. It means you’re aware of your
emotions. You can deal with them, whether they’re positive or negative. Emotionally healthy
people still feel stress, anger, and sadness. But they know how to manage their negative feelings.
They can tell when a problem is more than they can handle on their own. They also know when to
seek help from their doctor.

Emotional Health
Emotional Health is a state of general wellbeing that enables each person to experience joy, meet
the demands of everyday life, be
resilient and pursue his/her own potential.

Emotional health related to optimism, self-esteem, self- acceptance and the ability to share
feelings. Affects the other dimensions of health as a person with a good self-esteem is more
confident in social settings, makes friends quickly and often performs better in physical activity.

The relationship between emotional and mental health is clear and as such some illnesses relate to
both, such as: depression and anxiety.
People who experience great amounts of stress and negative
emotions will sometimes develop other health problems. These
problems are not caused directly by the negative feelings, but by
behaviors that negative emotions can influence due to a lack of
emotional regulation. For example, some people enjoy smoking
cigarettes or drinking alcohol as a way to relieve stress. However,
those habits put you at a greater risk for cancer, heart disease, and
other illnesses.

Keep in mind that a person can experience mental illness or bad days, and still have good
emotional wellness. Mental illnesses often have deeper causes like a chemical imbalance or
trauma. Emotional health has more to do with emotional regulation, awareness, and coping skills,
and these strategies can be used by people with or without a mental illness.

Emotional health matters, to all ages. Being human means facing challenges. Suffering is one thing
that all human beings have in common. This is why emotional health is so important. They will all
face adversity in their lifetimes. Social interaction and integration is a necessary part of daily life.
People who have optimal emotional health can appropriately interact with others, whether in
times of stress or in times of peace.

Ways to maintain or improve your Emotional Health :
• living a balanced lifestyle - try to have a good balance between work and your personal
life, activity and resting, and moderation in all things. Make time for things you enjoy. Focus on
positive things in your life.

• stay connected - community is important, plan regular shared time with friends and
family members, virtual connections are good, but seeing someone in person once in a while is
helpful too. You need positive connections with other people.

• meditate - meditation helps you to notice your thoughts and emotions, which is key to
emotional wellness. Give yourself time to think and be calm before you say or do something
you might regret.

• watch how you talk about yourself - negative self-talk can become a self- fulfilling
prophecy, or just put you in a negative mindset; work on creating a positive image of yourself
with your words, your thoughts may soon follow

• express your feelings in appropriate ways - Let people close to you know when
something is bothering you. Keeping feelings of sadness or anger inside adds to stress. It can
cause problems in your relationships and at work or school.

• set goals and celebrate your achievements - give yourself something to strive for, and
celebrate your accomplishments to build self-esteem and positive feelings about yourself

• be aware of your emotions and reactions -notice what in your life makes you sad,
frustrated, or angry. Try to address or change those things.

• stay positive - focus on the good things in your life. Forgive yourself for making mistakes
and forgive others. Spend time with healthy, positive people.

139

HEALTHY BODIES! HEALTHY MINDS! BOOKLET ON HEALTH DIMENSIONS

learn strategies for resilience - this is your ability to react to difficult emotions and stressful

situations; many of the same things that help you with emotional health can also improve your resilience

• find meaning in your life - figure out what’s important to you in life, and focu s on
that. Some people have jobs that give them a feeling of purpose, but that's not the only way to
find meaning in your life. Something as simple as caring for a pet or volunteering for a cause
that you're passionate about can also give you that feeling. Spend your time doing what feels
meaningful to you.

use substances in moderation - sometimes drinking too much alcohol is a way to numb difficult
emotions, notice when you are using substances more than usual, and think about whether there’s
an emotional cause for this

• get enough sleep - studies show that a lack of sleep lessens your ability to sense the
emotions of others and your ability to process emotions in general

• exercise - staying physically active for at least 30 minutes a day can help to improve your
overall emotional health; the exercise doesn't need to be overly tough or intense, just going for
a walk or dancing around your house can help

manage stress - Learn relaxation methods to cope with stress. These could include deep breathing,
meditation, and exercise.

know when to reach out for help - you don't have to handle negative emotions on your own;
knowing when to reach out to a mental health professional for help with difficult emotions is a
useful skill to have. You should also reach out to one if you have tried to improve your emotional
health, but still aren't feeling your best.

The fifth mobility took place between 14th and 18th March 2022 in "Los Olivos" school in Malaga,
Spain. Participants talked about Emotional Health. This mobility was attended physically by all
participating countries (Romania, Poland, Greece, Italy and Turkey).

The mobility was based on 5 clues to boost the

emotional health, presenting each of them
during a day of the week: Meeting New People,
Mindfulness and Meditation, Discovering New
Places, Taking Care of our Self-Esteem and Sports
and Outdoor Activities. Both students and
teachers enjoyed a great week full of learning
activities and new experiences.

The first day started with the welcome ceremony, principal's speech and artistic performances.
Students were split up in six teams so they would work with these new people for the whole week.
A management meeting was organized to discuss about all the plans for the week. Working in
international groups on different activities strengthened the teams and let them know each other
better. A lot of movement, conversations, questions and answers, collaborative job, were involved
in these activities as a way of working on the emotional health and develop the emotional
intelligence. Every school made a presentation on Emotional Health they had prepared before
coming to this mobility. They discussed what Emotional Health is and the effects it has on people
and their wellbeing. The day ended with a lecture from a specialist on the topic.

The importance of social media in student's life is a fact nowadays in all countries. The constant
use of mobile devices and social media is clearly affecting young adults (as well as grown up
adults) and their vision of the world and themselves. Considering this, a full working day was
dedicated to develop in all the group (students and teachers) a different kind of conscience
about the use and effects of social media in emotional health, dealing with matters such as self-
esteem, relationships, addictions, mental and physical health. Students were
involved in debates, sharing their views, agreeing and disagreeing with some of the proposed
ideas, realizing how much their lives are affected by all kind of apps
and social media influencers, looking for positive examples and healthy role models for them.

these boosted emotional health. It is well known that people need to be active to enjoy a really
balanced state of mind. Also, a workshop was held by a psychologist, Ms Laura Orcazarán
addressed to make the students look for their best self. Last day was a great one, reaching its

During the week, participants developed activities aimed at knowing what Emotional Health is,
how important the emotional Health is in daily life, what are the basic emotions, how emotions
affect the health of people as well as strategies to improve emotional health.

To develop all these contents, during the Learning/Teaching/Training activity participants took
part in debates, group dynamics, workshops, lectures and cultural and educational visits. All these
activities were done cooperatively, in order to enrich the learning process of each student. These
activities promoted equity and possibilities to collaborate and included every student, despite
different backgrounds, abilities or economical obstacles.

Emotional health is a dynamic state that fluctuates frequently with your other six dimensions of
wellness. Being emotionally well is typically defined as possessing the ability to feel and express

155

HEALTHY BODIES! HEALTHY MINDS! BOOKLET ON HEALTH DIMENSIONS

human emotions such as happiness, sadness and anger. It means having the ability to love and be
loved and achieving a sense of fulfilment in life. Emotional wellness encompasses optimism, self-
esteem, self- acceptance and the ability to share feelings.

Emotional health is about the person’s mood or general emotional state. It is our ability to
recognize and express feelings adequately. It relates to your self-esteem as well as your ability
control your emotions to maintain a realistic perspective on situations. The relationship between
emotional and mental health is clear and as such some illnesses relate to both, such as: depression
and anxiety.

People who are emotionally healthy are in control of their thoughts, feelings and behaviors.

Ultimately, emotional health has more to do with whether people avoid stress, anxiety or

156

HEALTHY BODIES! HEALTHY MINDS! BOOKLET ON HEALTH DIMENSIONS

depression. It has to do with their very existence (their peace, joy or sorrow). It concerns the ways
they manage the difficult situations of life but also their interpersonal relationships. And

the most important of all is directly related to whether they take care of themselves and all those
issues that in the end allow them to have a beautiful and quality life!

Social health is more than just the prevention of mental illness

and social problems. Being socially healthy means increased
degree of happiness including sense of belonging and concern
for others.

As you grow, social ties start building their place in your lives.
You become a part of different communities around you like,
school etc. These positive relations help you build a support
system making you healthier. Social health might seem
ignorable and difficult to address yet it stands as one of the
pillars of health.

It has been proven with relevant incidence that those who are well integrated in the society have
longer and healthier life.

Whether you live in a small town or a big city,
there are many things that you can do to be a
part of your community and town. You can
participate in events held in your town. Try and
volunteer somewhere weekly or biweekly so that
you can establish relationships with those who
volunteer there!

Be Yourself
There is no point in trying to form or create relationships unless you are yourself! Do what makes
you happy and fulfills your needs. Being social comes within you and you will find the best of
people doing things that you love to do. If you try to find fulfillment through things that do not
please you, you will not fill your life with the people that you truly need around you.

Avoid Toxic People and Environments

One of the downfalls of social health is that you will meet someone that is not that great. However,
every experience and person is a lesson and can prevent you from getting hurt in the future. Try
to form friendships and relationships through a positive environment such as social events, yoga
class, culture events, local coffee shops etc.

Don’t Isolate Yourself

Spend 20 minutes a day to set a goal for yourself. Set up a coffee day with one of your friends
biweekly to make sure that you are fulfilling your social needs. Develop new hobbies by joining
groups of reading, drawing, writing, yoga etc. Learn new skills like art, dance, cooking, swimming
etc. Travel and meet new people. There is nothing wrong with wanting to be alone but we do not
want to get to the point of becoming lonely.

Allone we can do so little!

Together we can do so much!

Get Out There and Socialize!

It isn’t easy to be social and to start new friendships

but know that is worth all of the health benefits.
Having healthy social health levels provide
emotional, physical and positive mental health on
all levels. So get out there and get hugging and
making friends since it is beneficial for your health.

Learn How to Communicate

One of the most important things to understand about your social health is to learn how to
communicate effectively and positively. Becoming a clear communicator means effectively
conveying your thoughts, ideas, needs and wants. Communicating clearly helps you manage your
time and your life, to feel good about yourself, and to build trustworthy relationships with others.

Without this, it is hard to form and maintain bonds—even between strangers.

Some methods that can help you communicate more effectively with those around you are:
❖ Be an engaged listener
❖ Make intentional language choices
❖ Express yourself
❖ Pay attention to nonverbal signs
❖ Control your emotions

Unfortunately, not all relationships are healthy. Some of the reasons are the toxic relationships,
the bad influences and that people are always changing. Having healthy relation involves good
communication, empathy, and care for family, friends and colleagues. Being self-centered, violent
and alone have ill effects on health causing stress and depression which are a threat to self and
others. Social isolation and social exclusion, both are causes of poor chances of survival with a
decreased degree of quality of life, depression and increased risk for chronic diseases. These in
turn can lead to poor physical and mental health.

Social health is the ability to form satisfying interpersonal relationships with others. It also refers
to the ability to adapt comfortably to different social situations and act appropriately in a variety
of settings.

Remaining social has many health benefits; social interaction is particularly important for
maintaining optimal physical and mental health, and for forming new interpersonal relationships.
Human beings are social by nature; people not only want interactions, they demand them. And
that is what makes social wellbeing a vital element of your overall well-being. If you don’t have
strong relationships in your lives, your ability to live automatically becomes limited.

However, today, people often let their social welfare fall to a bare minimum. They fail to leave
enough time to work on developing and maintaining these social ties. Healthy relationships have
an impact on the mental and physical state. They can help us manage stress, live longer lives and
become healthier.

center of the heart the name of another child in the group as well as words of empathy for
him/her. At the end of the workshop they exchanged the hearts.

The second day students and teachers watched the Egyptian short film entitled "L'ALTRA PAR".
The film described how people are isolated in technology and forget one of the best things in life,
human interaction, empathy and love. This was followed by a discussion on the concepts of
communication, human interaction, empathy, negative patterns, the influence of technology
(social media) in everyday life and a workshop entitled "Social Media: How it affects you
emotionally, physically and mentally?", which was coordinated by the social worker of Gymnasium
Keramotis Mrs. Saridou Maria. Participants debated on the role social media has on people’s
wellness and behavior, about the positive parts of social media, its drawbacks and how this affects
our social life and social health, emotionally, physically and mentally.

Students created collages with communication, human interaction and empathy messages. Having
a ton of friends on social media doesn’t ensure or even promote high-quality relationships — a
key requirement for balanced social health. As humans, we need significant, close interpersonal
connections to be socially healthy. We thrive on being able to connect and socialize with our
closest people. Having social empathy means being able to understand the other person,
communicate with him or her and make him or her feel better.

the learning process. The fourth day, as part of the activities of the meeting, a lecture, discussion
and workshop on the hazards of the internet were held, by Mrs. Pavlidou Nancy, Psychologist and
by Mrs Athina Zografou, Social Worker. The aim of the activity "Social health and Internet use as

to to make participants awarness about the way the internet affects their social health and the
drawbacks it has on their social life, the role it plays in the development of children and
adolescents, and the use of the Internet as social health tool and helper (how the internet has a
positive effect on the socialization and adaptation of adolescent children).

Thus, a presentation entitled "Let's go surfing with safety" was held, in order to promote the safe
and positive use of digital technology among young people. The goal was to cultivate safe internet
browsing skills, with responsibility, respect, critical thinking and creativity. Students were first
introduced to the benefits of the internet and then the risks were analyzed, such as inappropriate
content, seduction, violent games, bullying, harmful behaviors, addiction, alienation, privacy,

deception, social networks etc. Particular importance was given to know what internet addiction
is and what the symptoms are. Finally, reference was made to the ways in which adolescents can
be protected. At the end of the presentation there was a discussion about social health and how
it is affected by the excessive use of the Internet. An experiential activity followed, which aimed
to raise awareness regarding internet security issues. Initially, the students were divided into four
groups of four - five people from different countries. Each group was given a different scenario
that they were asked to work out. The scripts were about seduction, intimidation, inappropriate
content and interception of personal data (negative effects of the internet). Each group read their
script and then, after answering some helpful questions, presented it to the plenary. It emerged
from the discussion that young people had the opportunity to work out the effective and secure
internet use.

• feel willing to provide support to others to meet personal goals and
• enjoy to travel when they are with other people.

Most of students:
• believe that their relationship with other people needs to be improved and strive for that,
• believe that working with others is important in order to fulfill their goals,
• consider that their self-esteem is positive in matters related to their responsibilities and duties,
• respect human rights,
• consider social responsibility an important factor for people's standard of living,
• feel joy with the joy of the people around them,
• can feel and perceive to a large extent what other people think and feel and
• participate in school activities with satisfaction and joy.

We believe that the most important point for students to improve is the insecurity in their
relationships with other people.

In conclusion, we can say that they have a good level in Social Health, but to improve it they can:
• Join community events
• Learn to communicate effectively
• Be their self
• Avoid toxic people and environments
• Not isolate their self (develop new hobbies by joining groups of reading, drawing, writing, yoga
etc, learn new skills like art, dance, cooking, swimming etc. , travel and meet new people.)
• Get Out There and Socialize

Empathy, understanding, and the power of community can build a bridge to better social wellbeing
for all.
