Output Devices

• Output devices are used to display information after data processing.

• There are two types of output devices: hard copy and soft copy output devices.
• Hard copy output devices produce a printed output while soft copy devices produce a non-
printed output.

Hard Copy Devices Soft Copy Devices

Printer Monitor
Plotter Headphones
Cutter Speaker
Projector

1. Monitor
Also known as VDU (Visual Display Unit).
• Considered the main output device of a computer.
• Images in monitor are made up of pixels.
• The sharpness of the image depends on the number of pixels (or size of pixels).
• Smaller the pixel (higher number of pixels), sharper the image.

CRT
Monitor LCD
Flat-Panel
LED

CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) Monitor

• Can display 80 characters of data horizontally and 25 lines of data vertically.

• Large in size and consumes lot of power.

LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) Monitor

• Present in laptop computers, calculators, graphic display, monitors etc.

• Takes up less space and consumes less power than CRT.
• Better quality output than CRT but less quality output than LED.

LED (Light Emitting Diode) Monitor

• Produces a high-quality output and takes up less space.

• Has to be replaced after a specific period of time.
• LED is more environmentally friendly than LCD.
2. Printers
• There are two types of 2D Printers:
o Impact Printer: It prints the characters by striking them on the ribbon which is then
pressed on the paper.
o Non-Impact Printer: a printing device in which a printing element does not directly
strike a surface.

Impact Printers

Characteristics: Cheap, Very Noisy, poor quality Suitable for bulk printing

Ex:

o Dot Matrix Printers (Prints character by character and can print on multi-part stationary)
o Line Printer (Prints line by line)

Non-Impact Printers

Characteristics: Faster than impact printers, not noisy, high quality, Support many fonts and
different character size.

Ex:

o Inkjet Printer (Prints line by line)

o Laser Printers (Prints page by page)

Advantages and Disadvantages of laser printer

Advantages Disadvantages
Fast printing for high volumes Expensive
High quality Cannot be used with continuous stationery
Toner cartridges last for long Takes up space

3D Printers

• Materials Used: Powdered resin, metal, plastic or ceramic power

• Used in CAD projects to produce 3D objects
3. Cutter

A 2D cutter is an output device capable of cutting holes or shapes into a flat 2D surface.

A 3D cutter is similar to a 2D cutter except it is capable of rotating and cutting at many angles. You
can cut beyond the surface of the material to get 3D view.

4. Plotter

• Produces hard copy like printer but it is not limited to A4 or A3 paper.

• Can produce large drawings.
5. Data Projector

Data projectors are output devices used to project the digital output from a computer
device on to a large screen or wall.
Projectors are ideal when training or presenting information to a large audience.

6. Speaker/ Headphones

Speakers and headphone are the output devices responsible for producing sounds.

Speakers and headphones aren’t just for music, they also allow us to hear computer warning
signals and other people when communicating via voice or video calls.

Typical applications for speakers and headphones

• Headphones keep sound personal so as not to disturb others

• Speakers allow for sound that can fill the room
• Music
• Communications (phones, tablets, laptops)
