A Life Lesson
By Anonymous.
I lost my father when I was only nine years old. This was the biggest loss I have had. He was everything to
me, his only daughter. We were so close. I did not lose him to death though.I lost him in a much harder
way: I lost my father to drugs. He got addicted and started to ignore my brother and me.
One cool summer night, my brother,a couple of our friends, and Iwere watching Scary Movie 3 in the living
room. Around 9:30 pm, when I looked toward the kitchen, I saw orange and yellow flames reflecting off
the door's window. It was a mess explosion caused by his careless actions under the influence of the
drugs.
After the fire was out, Isaw my dad run around to the backyard and jump into the pool. I knew then that
he had gotten burned. He ended up confined in the hospital. After he got better, they put him in jail for a
month under drug charges. I was so mad and hurt, and suffered from severe depression. It destroyed my
health and my social life.
One day, one of my teachers stopped me in the hall to ask if I was okay. She asked if she could help me, if I
would tell her what was going on. So I did. She helped save me and lift me back up. After a while, I started
to feel and do better. She is now one of my greatest friends and mentors, and we talk daily. I could never
repay her for everything she has done for me.
Through my experiences, I learned never to do anything without thinking of how it will impact the people
around me. (Adapted from"A Life Lesson" Anonymous. Teen Ink)
Once upon a time Sammy and his sister Marie visited their grandparents at their farm. Sammy picked up a
slingshot to play with out in the woods. He practiced in the woods, but he could never hit the target.
Getting a little discouraged, he headed back for the lunch. As he was walking back, he saw Grandma's pet
duck.
Just out of impulse, he let the slingshot fly which hit the duck square in the head and killed it. He was
shocked and grieved. In a panic, he hid the dead duck in the pile of woods. Marie had seen all from he
window, but she said nothing. After the lunch, the next day Grandma said, "Marie, let's wash the dishes."
Marie said, "But Grandma, Sammy told me he wanted to help in the kitchen."
Then she whispered toSammy, "Remember the duck?" Sammy got nervous knowing his sister knewabout
the duck and if he did not obey, she might tell his grandparents about it. So, without saying anything, he
did the dishes.
Later that day, Grandpa asked if the children wanted to go fishing but Grandma said, "I'm sorry but I need
Marie to help make a supper." Marie just smiled and said, "Well that's all right because Sammy told me he
wanted to help."
She whispered again to Sammy, "Remember the duck?" So, Marie went fishing and Sammy stayed to help.
After several days of Marie taking advantage of Sammy, he finally couldn't stand it any longer. He came to
Grandma and confessed that he had killed the duck.
Grandma knelt down, gave him a hug and said, "Sweetheart, I know. I was standing at the window and I
saw the whole thing but because I love you, I've forgiven you. I was just wondering how long you would
let Marie take advantage of you."

Glowing candles add the perfect romantic touch to your dinner table or holiday spread. Burning candles
often drip wax, however, leaving ugly blotches on your table. Melted wax is not hot enough to damage
your furniture, but the color can leave a stain on light-colored wood, so it's best to remove the candle wax
as soon as possible. If you act carefully, you can remove the wax without scratching or ouging the table.
Steps :
Ø Soften dried wax with a blow dryer onmedium heat.
Ø Keep the blow dryer 3 to 4 Inches away from the table.
Ø Blot up the softened wax with a soft, white cloth.
Ø Mix ½ cup of white vinegar into 1 cup of water.
Ø Dip the cloth into the vinegar mixture, and wipe away any leftover wax.
Ø Clean your table with furniture polish to restore the shine.

Skateboards
Skateboards are sport equipment used for the activity of skateboarding. A skateboard consists of a
specially designed maple wood board combined with a polyurethane coating in order to have smoother
slides and stronger durability. Most skateboards are-made with 7 plies of this wood.
Many skateboards existwith exotic or alternative constructions. Traditional complete skateboards consist
of the deck (often with grip tape applied on top to enhance traction), trucks (with urethane bushings),
wheels (with sealed bearings), nuts, and bolts to fasten the truck and wheel assembly to the bottom of the
deck. Recently, electric skateboards have appeared. These no longer require the propelling of the
skateboard by means of the feet; rather an electric motor propels the board, fed by an electric battery.
The board types depend largely upon its desired function. The two common types of skateboards are the
longboard and the shortboard. Longboards are the type of skateboards with longer wheelbases (over 33
inches long) and larger, softer wheels. Shortboards are the type of skateboards which commonly have a
rectangular shape kick tail at the back and a rounded nose in the front. They are usually less than 34
inches long. Besides, longboards are usually faster and are mostly used for cruising and racing, while
shortboards are mostly used for doing tricks.

Bullying is the use of force or coercionto abuse or intimidate others. The behavior can be habitual and
involve an imbalance of social or physical power. It can include verbal harassment or threat, physical
assault or coercion and may be directed repeatedly towards particular victims, perhaps on grounds of
race, religion, gender, sexuality, or ability. The victim of bullying is sometimes referred to as a "target".
Bullying can occur in any context in which human being interact with each other. This includes school,
church, family, the workplace, home, and neighborhoods. Bullying is absolutely wrong for several reasons.
First, nobody wants to get bullied. Imagine if you or your family member is one who is being bullied.
What do you think will happen to him/her? Nobody wants to live his/her life like a frightened rabbit,
right?
Second, the victims can make a revenge by telling their parents, teachers or even your principal about
what you have done to them, and surely, you will be in a very, very big trouble.
Finally, bullying can result in very serious consequences. Maybe it is done for fun, but the victims can
consider it as a deep traumatic experience that can lead to depression, or even suicide. When that
happens, surely you will forever be regretful.
From the facts above, it is clear that bullying is wrong, and it only brings negative impacts.
Land Reclamation
Land reclamation will definitely increase land area for a certain country. More land has been made
available for development. More buildings and infrastructure can be built.
However, much greenery has been removed in order for the land needed. Land reclamation can be
damaging to corals and marine life. Corals are usually moved to another place when land is to be
reclaimed. The corals might not be able to survive in that certain habitat, and thus die out. In some
countries, where the project is large-scale, they do not even bother to re-plant the corals elsewhere,
instead just reclaim the land on their habitat, causing them to die out immediately. Marine life, such as
fish, might not have enough food after the plantations are destroyed due to reclamation of land. This
applies to the food chain. The water might also be polluted from the soil used to reclaim land, causing the
fish to die and blocking out sunlight, depriving the underwater plants of growth. Marine habitats are also
destroyed; therefore, the marine creatures would be forced to move to another new habitat. Some might
not be able to adapt, and thus die out. Some would just die without even finding a new habitat, as they
cannot move long distances in water.
Finally, the reasons and examples look tempting to humans, but marine life is life too! We should try to
protect it as much as possible, instead of just focusing on the advantages.
9. The reader learns from the text that the corals should be replanted because...
A. they can survive elsewhere easily.
B. They make fish have their hiding place.
C. They could block out sunlight for the fish.
D. Their habitat can be used to reclaim again.
E. They could survive as the source of food for fish.
ANSWER = E. They could survive as the source of food for fish.
