2.1 General Safety Precautions

CAUTION
Risk of Accident Due to the Uncontrolled Movement of the Ve‐
hicle
With the engine running the uncontrolled movement of the ve‐
hicle can be possible if a selector lever position is engaged.
– Place the selector lever into the “P” position.

– Engage the parking brake.
CAUTION
Risk of Destroying the Electronic Components.
Risk of destroying electronic components when disconnecting
the battery.
– Always turn off the ignition before disconnecting the battery.

♦ Only connect and disconnect test equipment when the ignition
is off.

2.4 Safety Precautions when Tow Starting

and Towing
CAUTION
Risk of Damaging the Transmission.
It is possible to damage the transmission by towing the vehicle
improperly.
– Place the selector lever in the “N” position to tow the vehicle.
– When towing, do not drive faster than 50 km/h and do not drive
over 50 km/h.

3.1 Oil Distribution

Transmission with Combined Oil System:
♦ The oil chambers inside the front final drive -3- and inside the
transfer case -1- are consolidated via the protective pipe -2-.
♦ The side shaft runs in gear oil in the protective pipe.
♦ No oil overflow hole present.
Transmission with Separated Oil System:

♦ The protective pipe -2- is free of oil, the transfer case -1- and
the front final drive -3- is sealed with a gasket to side shaft.
♦ A transmission with separate oil system can be identified by
the oil overflow hole -arrow-.

Removing

– Turn the -T40176- upward.

– To prevent the torque converter from tipping, counterhold on
the bottom on the torque converter.
– Remove the torque converter without tilting from the input
shaft -arrow- at the same time pay attention to the vent line.
– Set the torque converter down carefully, for example on the
workbench.

Installing
Install in the reverse order of removal while noting the following:
– Thoroughly clean the torque converter bell housing in the area
where the differential is accessed -arrow A- and the seal
-arrow B-.
• A damaged gasket between the differential and the transmis‐
sion housing -arrow B- must be replaced. Refer to ⇒ 8-Speed
Automatic Transmission; Rep. Gr. 39 ; Seals; Component Lo‐
cation Overview - Seals .

– Secure the -T40176- to the torque converter with a nut.
– Push the torque converter carefully all the way onto the input
shaft -2- without tilting it using the -T40176- .
– Using light pressure, turn the torque converter toward the in‐
side until the its splines engage into the input hub for the ATF
pump and the torque converter noticeably slides toward the
inside.
Check the Position of the Torque Converter:

If the converter is installed correctly, the space -a- between the
surface of the securing eyes and the surface of the torque con‐
verter bell housing will be the following values:
• Dimension -a- = minimum 16 mm with respect to the correctness of information in this document. Copyright by AUDI AG.
– Remove the -T40176- from the torque converter -A-.

– Remove the nut -B-.
– Install the left flange shaft. Refer to ⇒ 8-Speed Automatic
Transmission; Rep. Gr. 39 ; Differential; Left Flange Shaft,
Removing and Installing .

♦ Grease for Clutch Plate Shaft Splines - G 000 100-

Removing
• Before beginning the procedures check if the necessary re‐
placement parts are available. Refer to the Parts Catalog.
• Transmission removed. Refer to ⇒ 8-Speed Automatic Trans‐
mission; Rep. Gr. 37 ; Transmission, Removing and Installing;
Transmission, Removing .
– Secure the -T40176- on the torque converter -2- with the nut
-1-.
Tip:
To prevent the torque converter from tilting, counterhold it under‐
neath as shown.
– Turn the -T40176- upward.
– Remove the torque converter without tilting from the input
shaft at the same time pay attention to the vent line.
– Set the torque converter down carefully, for example on the
workbench.
Installing
• Replace the O-ring -arrow- on the input shaft.
– Check the torque converter. Refer to
⇒ “1.4 Torque Converter, Checking”, page 12 .
– Check the seal for the torque converter for damage or leaks.
If required, replace. Refer to
⇒ “1.5 Torque Converter Seal, Removing and Installing”, page
13 .
– Coat the input shaft -3- thin with Grease for Clutch Plate
Splines - G 000 100- .
– Secure the -T40176- on the torque converter -1- with the nut
-2-.
– Push the torque converter carefully all the way onto the input
shaft without tilting it using the -T40176- .
– Using light pressure, turn the torque converter toward the in‐
side until the its splines engage into the input hub for the ATF
pump and the torque converter noticeably slides toward the
inside.
Check the Position of the Torque Converter.

If the torque converter is installed correctly, the dimension -a- be‐
tween the surface of the securing eyes and the surface of the
torque converter bell housing will be the following values:
• Dimension -a- = minimum 30 mm
If the torque converter was not completely replaced, the dimen‐
sion is approximately 18 mm.
Note the Following Points When Installing the Transmission.
• Before and during fastening the Three-Phase Current Drive -
VX54- / transmission flange bolts, check that the torque con‐
verter can still be turned behind the drive motor.
• If the torque converter cannot be turned, it must be assumed
that it has not been inserted properly and that the coupling
plate of the torque converter or the ATF pump will be destroyed
during final tightening of the bolts.
– Remove the -T40176- from the torque converter.
1.3 Torque Converter, Draining

♦ Used Oil Collection And Extraction Unit - SMN372500- with
Flexible Oil Extraction Probe - 6x700mm - SMN737952-
Procedure
If the ATF becomes dirty due to shavings or during a major trans‐
mission overhaul, then the torque converter must be drained.
– Place the torque converter as shown on two wooden blocks.
– Extract the ATF from the torque converter using the -
SMN372500- .
1.4 Torque Converter, Checking

– Check the torque converter hub -arrow- for wear grooves.
• The torque converter must be replaced if it is damaged or
faulty.

Procedure
– Remove the torque converter. Refer to

– Pry out the torque converter gasket with the -T20143/2-
– Coat the outer edge and sealing lips of the seal with ATF.
• Installation position: open side of the seal faces the transmis‐
sion.
– Install the torque converter gasket all the way in the -T40240-
-1-.

– Remove the bolts in the following sequence: -3 to 1-.
– Remove the Transmission Fluid Auxiliary Hydraulic Pump 1 -
V475- -A- from the transmission housing.
• The Transmission Fluid Auxiliary Hydraulic Pump 1 - V475-
fits tightly into the transmission housing because of the O-ring
-D-.
Installing
• Connect the connectors -2 and 3- for the wire -1- correctly in
the transmission housing.
• Do not use connectors interchangeably.

– Carefully and without any aids, replace the O-ring -D- on the
Transmission Fluid Auxiliary Hydraulic Pump 1 - V475- .
• The Transmission Fluid Auxiliary Hydraulic Pump 1 - V475- be
replaced if the O-ring seat is damaged or scratched.
– Insert the Transmission Fluid Auxiliary Hydraulic Pump 1 -
V475- with a new O-ring -D-.
– Tighten the bolt in the following sequence: -1 to 3-.

– Connect and lock the connector -B- to the Transmission

Removing
– Remove the Mechatronic. Refer to

– Remove the bolts -arrows- and remove the right transmission
support -1- with the transmission mount.

– Disconnect the connector -arrow- for the Transmission Fluid

Auxiliary Hydraulic Pump 1 - V475- on the right side of the
transmission.
– Free up the wire.
– Remove the lock washer -A- from the connector -B- for the
Transmission Fluid Auxiliary Hydraulic Pump 1 - V475- wiring
harness in direction of -arrow-.
– Mark the connectors -2 and 3- to the openings in the trans‐

mission housing before removing.
– When installing a new wiring harness -1-, position these mark‐
ings accordingly.
– Disconnect the connectors -2 and 3- from the transmission
housing.
– Remove the wiring harness -1- from the brackets -arrows-.
– Disconnect the connector -4- from the transmission housing
-5-.

Installing
• If the previous wiring harness -1- is to be reinstalled, then re‐
place the O-ring on the connector -4-.
• Installed position of the connector -4-: Insert with the straight
surfaces at the housing ribs -5- as shown in the illustration.
– Press the lock washer -A- onto the connector -B- for the Trans‐
mission Fluid Auxiliary Hydraulic Pump 1 - V475- wiring har‐
ness in the opposite direction of -arrow- and secure it.
– Press the connectors -2 and 3-, marked similar to the removal,
into the transmission housing openings.
– Install the Mechatronic. Refer to
⇒ “2.2 Mechatronic, Removing and Installing”, page 32 .

NOTICE
– Turn the twist lock counter-clockwise in direction of -arrow-

and disconnect the connector from the transmission.
– Remove the bolt -1-.

– Turn the connector housing -2- counter-clockwise in direction
of -arrow- and remove it.
– If equipped, remove the auxiliary hydraulic pump or hydraulic
pulse memory. Refer to

Audi A8 (Shift by Wire)

– Bring the selector lever -3- for the parking lock emergency re‐
lease in a vertical position and fix using the cable tie -arrow-.
• The selector slide -1- can then engage easier into the claw
-2- of the emergency release during installation.

CAUTION
Risk of Causing Damage to the Mechatronic.
– Only the bolts with a T40 TORX® bolt head may be loos‐
ened.
– If other bolts are loosened, this may impair the function of
the Mechatronic unit or it may come apart.

– Install the four -T40199- in the threaded holes
-5, 7, 12 and 14- hand-tight.
– Remove the Transmission Output Speed Sensor - G195- -4-
from the transmission housing before removing the Mecha‐
tronic.
– Remove the Mechatronic.
– Lay the Mechatronic with the bolt head side facing down only.
Installing
• Always replace the Mechatronic if it is dirty or faulty.
• When installing use the complete repair kit.
– Install new O-rings -1 and 3- into the grooves in the oil pipes.
– Install the ATF line -2- into the Mechatronic.
– Check the oil pipes for damage and make sure they fit securely
inside the Mechatronic.

– Remove the sealing sleeve using the -T10271- and install a

new sleeve.
– If still not present, install the four Oil Sump Assembly Pin -
T40199- hand-tight, as shown.
Tip
• The spring clip on the back of the Mechatronic prevents the
Mechatronic from being mounted flush on the transmission
housing.
• It is recommended to have a second technician help when in‐
stalling the Mechatronic.
Audi A8 (Shift by Wire)

– Mount the Mechatronic on the transmission housing.
• The claw -2- on the emergency release must fit behind the pin
in the selector slider -1- -arrow-.
Audi Models Without Shift by Wire

– Carefully mount the Mechatronic on the transmission housing.
• The selector lever -A- must engage into the yoke -C- for the
Multifunction Transmission Range Switch - F125- -arrow 1-; if
necessary, move the yoke -C- accordingly.
• The selector lever -A- must fit into the selector slide -B-
-arrow 2-. Move the selector slide -B- if necessary.

– Install the bolts -1 through 4- by hand until the bolt heads make
contact.
– Remove the four -T40199- .
– Tighten the bolts on the Mechatronic in the specified tightening
sequence. Refer to

– If equipped, install the auxiliary hydraulic pump or hydraulic

Note
The circlip secures the transmission output shaft to the bearing in

– Carefully remove the transmission output shaft from the center

differential housing using a copper mandrel.
Note
To remove the transmission output shaft, tension the self-locking

center differential housing in a vise or have a second technician
hold it tight with both hands.
– Pry out the shaft seal -1-.
Installing
– Coat the outer edge of the shaft seal with axle oil.
• Installed position: The open side of the shaft seal faces the
housing.
– Using the -T40239- -1-, install the shaft seal until it stops. Do
not bend the seal.
– Fill the space between the sealing/dust lip halfway with Seal‐
ing Grease - G 052 128 A1- .
– Install the transmission output shaft into the center differential

housing as follows:

Double Shaft Seal Leak:
♦ If oil leaks out of the oil overflow hole -arrow-, the double shaft
seal between the ATF and the transmission fluid is damaged.
♦ For this repair the transfer case must be disassembled and

Removing
– Remove the driveshaft. Refer to ⇒ Rear Final Drive 0D2, 0D3,
– Remove the self-locking center differential. Refer to

CAUTION
Damage to the Transmission Support Due to Parts Falling Out.
– When removing the intermediate housing transmission parts
can fall out.
– Damaged or fallen bearings and shafts cannot be replaced,
because complex measuring methods are required for this
which cannot be performed using the customer service
tools.
– Perform the following steps with the greatest possible care.
– Position the -SMN372500- under the transfer case, to catch

any transmission parts which may fall out.
– Remove all bolts and carefully remove the intermediate hous‐
ing.

– Remove the shaft -1-.
– Remove the shaft -2- with the bearing -1-.
– Remove the bolt -1- and the sealing washer -2-.

– Position the old seal -1- to protect the housing sealing surface
and pry out of the pinion shaft -2- using the -VW637/2- .
– Pay attention, that the shim -1- does not get lost.
Seal - Replacing:
– Position the -VAS251411- , -VW416B- and -VW447H- as
shown and pry out the tapered roller bearing using the -

in this manual, we suggest you leave such repairs to an authorized Audi retailer or other
qualified shop. We especially urge you to consult an authorized Audi retailer before beginning
repairs on any vehicle that may still be covered wholly or in part by any of the extensive
warranties issued by Audi.
 Disconnect the battery negative terminal (ground strap) whenever you work on the fuel system
or the electrical system. Do not smoke or work near heaters or other fire hazards. Keep an
approved fire extinguisher handy.
 Audi is constantly improving its vehicles and sometimes these changes, both in parts and
specifications, are made applicable to earlier models. Therefore, part numbers listed in this
manual are for reference only. Always check with your authorized Audi retailer parts
department for the latest information.
 Any time the battery has been disconnected on an automatic transmission vehicle, it will be
necessary to reestablish Transmission Control Module (TCM) basic settings using the Audi
Factory Approved Scan Tool (ST).

Never work under the vehicle while the engine is running.
 For vehicles equipped with an anti-theft radio, be sure of the correct radio activation code
before disconnecting the battery or removing the radio. If the wrong code is entered when the
power is restored, the radio may lock up and become inoperable, even if the correct code is
used in a later attempt.
 If you are going to work under a vehicle on the ground, make sure that the ground is level.
Block the wheels to keep the vehicle from rolling. Disconnect the battery negative terminal
(ground strap) to prevent others from starting the vehicle while you are under it.
 Do not attempt to work on your vehicle if you do not feel well. You increase the danger of
injury to yourself and others if you are tired, upset or have taken medicine or any other
substances that may impair you or keep you from being fully alert.
 Never run the engine unless the work area is well ventilated. Carbon monoxide (CO) kills.
 Always observe good workshop practices. Wear goggles when you operate machine tools or
work with acid. Wear goggles, gloves and other protective clothing whenever the job requires
working with harmful substances.
 Tie long hair behind your head. Do not wear a necktie, a scarf, loose clothing, or a necklace
when you work near machine tools or running engines. If your hair, clothing, or jewelry were to
get caught in the machinery, severe injury could result.

Cautions & Warnings
 Do not re-use any fasteners that are worn or deformed in normal use. Some fasteners are
designed to be used only once and are unreliable and may fail if used a second time. This
includes, but is not limited to, nuts, bolts, washers, circlips and cotter pins. Always follow the
recommendations in this manual - replace these fasteners with new parts where indicated,
and any other time it is deemed necessary by inspection.
 Illuminate the work area adequately but safely. Use a portable safety light for working inside or
under the vehicle. Make sure the bulb is enclosed by a wire cage. The hot filament of an
accidentally broken bulb can ignite spilled fuel or oil.
 Friction materials such as brake pads and clutch discs may contain asbestos fibers. Do not
create dust by grinding, sanding, or by cleaning with compressed air. Avoid breathing
asbestos fibers and asbestos dust. Breathing asbestos can cause serious diseases such as
asbestosis or cancer, and may result in death.
 Finger rings should be removed so that they cannot cause electrical shorts, get caught in
running machinery, or be crushed by heavy parts.
 Before starting a job, make certain that you have all the necessary tools and parts on hand.
Read all the instructions thoroughly, do not attempt shortcuts. Use tools that are appropriate to
the work and use only replacement parts meeting Audi specifications. Makeshift tools, parts
and procedures will not make good repairs.
 Catch draining fuel, oil or brake fluid in suitable containers. Do not use empty food or
beverage containers that might mislead someone into drinking from them. Store flammable
fluids away from fire hazards. Wipe up spills at once, but do not store the oily rags, which can
ignite and burn spontaneously.
 Use pneumatic and electric tools only to loosen threaded parts and fasteners. Never use these
tools to tighten fasteners, especially on light alloy parts. Always use a torque wrench to tighten
fasteners to the tightening torque listed.

hydrogen gas is ignited, it will ignite gas trapped in the cells and cause the battery to explode.
 Be mindful of the environment and ecology. Before you drain the crankcase, find out the
proper way to dispose of the oil. Do not pour oil onto the ground, down a drain, or into a
stream, pond, or lake. Consult local ordinances that govern the disposal of wastes.
 The air-conditioning (A/C) system is filled with a chemical refrigerant that is hazardous. The
A/C system should be serviced only by trained automotive service technicians using approved
refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment, trained in related safety precautions, and familiar
with regulations governing the discharging and disposal of automotive chemical refrigerants.
 Before doing any electrical welding on vehicles equipped with anti-lock brakes (ABS),
disconnect the battery negative terminal (ground strap) and the ABS control module
connector.
 Do not expose any part of the A/C system to high temperatures such as open flame.
Excessive heat will increase system pressure and may cause the system to burst.

 When boost-charging the battery, first remove the fuses for the Engine Control Module (ECM),
the Transmission Control Module (TCM), the ABS control module, and the trip computer. In
cases where one or more of these components is not separately fused, disconnect the control
module connector(s).
 Some of the vehicles covered by this manual are equipped with a supplemental restraint
system (SRS), that automatically deploys an airbag in the event of a frontal impact. The airbag
is operated by an explosive device. Handled improperly or without adequate safeguards, it can
be accidentally activated and cause serious personal injury. To guard against personal injury
or airbag system failure, only trained Audi Service technicians should test, disassemble or
service the airbag system.
 Do not quick-charge the battery (for boost starting) for longer than one minute, and do not
exceed 16.5 volts at the battery with the boosting cables attached. Wait at least one minute
before boosting the battery a second time.
 Never use a test light to conduct electrical tests of the airbag system. The system must only
be tested by trained Audi Service technicians using the Audi Factory Approved Scan Tool (ST)
or an approved equivalent. The airbag unit must never be electrically tested while it is not
installed in the vehicle.

sources of ignition away from the tire repair area. Inflate and deflate the tire at least four times
before breaking the bead from the rim. Completely remove the tire from the rim before
attempting any repair.

or lap while the vehicle is in motion. Objects between you and the airbag can increase the risk
of injury in an accident.
