If you want to take a break but haven’t got a lot of time, you may decide to go for a long weekend to a
city in a different country. This kind of holiday is known as a city break. When people think of taking
a city break, they often think of popular destinations like London, Paris and Amsterdam. But you can
also choose to visit some less well-known cities around the world. Here are two unusual suggestions:
Reykjavik, Iceland
The first thing you notice when you arrive in Reykjavik is the amazing scenery. The city is situated
on the south coast of Iceland with snow-topped mountains in the background. The people of
Reykjavik are very cheerful and they help to give the city a great atmosphere. They are always happy
to show you around and to offer you local specialities, like cooked shark. It only takes a day to
explore the city centre, so you can take short trips out of the city to go hiking or to see volcanoes. You
can also take a trip to the sea to see whales. In the evening, enjoy the city’s elegant cafés or lively
nightclubs.
Istanbul, Turkey
If you are interested in history and enjoy sightseeing, Istanbul is a great choice for a city break. At
one time, Istanbul was known as Constantinople and was the capital of the Roman Empire. In 1453,
the city was conquered by the Ottomans and it became the centre of the Muslim world. Istanbul is a
unique city because it is a bridge between the East and the West. Most of its main attractions are in
the Old City, and you can explore them on foot. If you are looking for a different kind of shopping
experience, you can visit the Grand Bazaar – a huge market which has got more than 4,000 shops and
many different kinds of things for sale. Here you can argue with the shopkeepers and try to get cheap
prices.
In the evening, you can relax at a restaurant or café in the modern Beyoglu neighbourhood.
