4. Motivation
Now, let us have an activity called “Function
Machine”. The class will be divided into three
groups. Each group will be given materials
needed in this activity (manila paper, marker
and tape).
Listen to the mechanics.

1. I’ll be presenting a function machine

and a set of input to be process in the
machine.
2. Every member will help each other to
find the output in the given machine.
The first group to write and raise the
correct output will gain 1 point.
3. The group that will have the highest
score will be the winner.

2x +5

Questions:
1) 2(7) + 5 = 19
1) If 7 goes into the machine, what number
comes out?
2) 2(13) + 5 = 31
2) If 13 goes into the machine, what number
comes out?
3) 2(−4 ¿ × 2 + 5 = −3
3) If -4 goes into the machine, what number
comes out?
4) 2(𝑥) + 5 = 2 x+5
4) If 𝑥 goes into the machine, what comes
out?

5) 2(2𝑥) + 5 = 4𝑥+ 5
5) If 2𝑥 goes into the machine, what comes
out?

For those who got correct tap your shoulder

and say to yourself, you did great and for
those who got wrong tap your shoulder and
say, do much better next time.
The value that I develop is cooperation
ma’am.
Right. What value have you developed while
doing the activity?
It is important because it can help us to finish
Very good. Why is cooperation important in
the activity successfully.
performing an activity?

Exactly.

B. Developmental Activity

1. Presentation
What have you observed from the function We substitute the given input to the variable
machine activity? x to determine the output.

Great idea. The activity earlier has

something to do with our lesson for today
which is Evaluating Functions.

Here are the learning objectives that you will At the end of the lesson the we will be able
attain after our discussion. to:
1. evaluate function;
2. solve problems involving function;
3. develop cooperation during
discussion and group activity.
Think the functions as a function machine,
evaluating a function is analogous to Evaluating a function means replacing the
providing our machine a valid input. For variable in the function, in this case x, with a
clearer understanding here is the definition of value from the function’s domain and
evaluating a function. computing for the result. To denote that we
are evaluating f at x for some x in the
domain of f , we write f ( x).
In short, we substitute the given value of x to
evaluate the value of f ( x) or y .

Let us have an example, evaluate the

function f ( x )=2 x +1 if x=1.5. f ( x )=2 x +1 if x=1.5
f (1.5 )=2 (1.5 )+1
What is the value of the given function? f (1.5 )=4
The value of the function f ( x )=2 x +1 if
Correct. For another example, evaluate x=1.5 is 4.
2 x+1
y= if x=7 2 x+1
x−1 y= if x=7
x−1
Any volunteer to solve this on the board
2 (7)+1
y= 7−1
15
y= 6
State the value of y.
y=2.5
Exactly. Is it clear class? The value of y is 2.5 ma’am.

Alright. Let us have a seatwork, on a scratch Yes ma’am.

paper evaluate the given function. You have
3 minutes to do the activity.

Seatwork: Given f ( x )=2 x2−3 x+ 1,find

the following values
1. f (3 )
2. f (6 )

Kindly solve this on the board.

1. f ( x )=2 x2−3 x+ 1
f (3 )=2 ¿
f (3 )=2 (9)−9+ 1
f (3 )=18−9+1
f (3 )=10
2. f ( x )=2 x2−3 x+ 1

f (6 )=2 ¿
f (6 )=2 (36)−18+1
Excellent. Do you have any question? f (6 )=72−18+ 1
If there’s none, let’s apply the concept you’ve f (6 )=55
learned in real life situation.
None ma’am.
3. Application

In real-world, functions are mathematical

representations of many input-output
situations. Functions are widely used in
disciplines such as biology, chemistry,
economics, statistics and engineering.

For instance, how can we identify our daily

expenses if we aim to have a business?

Let us all solve that through group activity.

Listen to the mechanics

1. Analyze and solve the given word

problem by evaluating the function.
2. Write your answer on the strip of
manila paper provided for your group.
3. The first group to paste and got the
highest score will be the winner will
receive an additional 10 points for
participation.

Problem:
Your group decided to sell snacks in the
nearby school. In one day, your group
spends Php. 200 for rent and Php 25 for
each snack item you prepare. Your expenses
Given: 100 snacks, 150 snacks
in a single day can be expressed as the
C ( x )=25 x +200
function C ( x )=25 x +200, where x is the
number of snacks and C ( x ) is your daily
x=100 C ( x )=25 x +200
expenses in pesos. How much is your C ( 100 ) =25(100)+200
expenses if the group prepare 100 snacks? C (100) =2500+200
150 snacks? C (100)=2700
The daily expenses if the group prepare 100
snacks is Php 2700.

x=150 C ( x )=25 x +200

C ( 150 ) =25(150)+200
C (150)=3750+200
C (150)=3950
The daily expenses if the group prepare 150
Excellent. Congratulations to the winning snacks is Php 3950.
group you will have an additional 10 points.
Don’t worry other groups I appreciated your
efforts that’s why you will receive an
additional 5 points for participation.

4. Generalization

To sum up our lesson for today, what have

you learned from our discussion?
I learned the concept of evaluating functions.

Very good. Who can give other realization?

There is a lot of application of evaluating
