LESSON 1: Visual –Verbal relationships


Reading is vital for learning. As a Junior High School student, you are expected to learn about
different opportunities for the development of your macro-skills (listening, speaking, reading,
writing, and viewing). This lesson aims to enhance your reading proficiency. Specifically, you
should be able to:

Objectives:
a. Define expository writing;
b. Develop reading by examining and comparing ideas from the text; and
c. Explain visual-verbal relationships illustrated in tables, graphs, and information present in
the given expository text.

BRIEF INTRODUCTION

Writers of textbooks, magazines, news articles, essays, speeches, and even researchers
from different fields are often asked to present various facts and information that are purposeful
to the readers and listeners. It is known as Expository Text.
In this module, it will be emphasized that one of the most essential parts of learning
expository text is the enhancement of interpreting Non-verbal Materials such as tables, graphic
organizers, charts, etc. Non-verbal materials enable the readers to create bright and appealing
mental pictures that help them to remember important points and facts easily.

To bring together different information about Expository texts, always keep in mind the
following characteristics:

• Expository texts can include topics such as historical, scientific, or economic information.
• Information is presented with a clear organizational text structure which includes but is not
limited to description, chronology, comparison, cause/effect, problem/solution.
• It includes text features that support or enhance the text, such as photographs, illustrations,
captions, charts, diagrams, tables, graphs, and timelines.
• Examples of expository text may include trade books, articles, reports, textbooks, interviews,
and essays.

What are the symptoms of COVID-19?

The most common symptoms of COVID-19 are fever, dry cough, and tiredness. Other
symptoms that are less common and may affect some patients include aches and pains, nasal
congestion, headache, conjunctivitis, sore throat, diarrhea, loss of taste or smell or a rash on skin
or discoloration of fingers or toes. These symptoms are usually mild and begin gradually.
Some people become infected but only have very mild symptoms. Most people (about 80%)
recover from the disease without needing hospital treatment. Around 1 out of every 5 people
who gets COVID-19 becomes seriously ill and develops difficulty breathing. Older people, and
those with underlying medical problems like high blood pressure, heart and lung problems,
diabetes, or cancer, are at higher risk of developing serious illness. However, anyone can catch
COVID-19 and become seriously ill. People of all ages who experience fever and/or cough
associated with difficulty breathing/shortness of breath, chest pain/pressure, or loss of speech or
movement should seek medical attention immediately. If possible, it is recommended to call the
health care provider or facility first, so the patient can be directed to the right clinic.
