TV Series: Darna 2022

Darna is a popular and iconic pinoy superhero by Filipino artist Mars Ravelos. It’s first appearance was
on May 13, 1950 in a Philippine comics. Since then, it has been adapted into movies and TV series over
the years. Just recently, the newest remake of Darna has been released under ABS-CBN through their
online platform dubbed Kapamilya Online Channel. A lot of people have great expectations of TV series
as it has been remade many times hoping that it’s production especially its computer graphics interface
(CGI) has improved. The much-awaited episode of Darna is always its first transformation. Here is my
honest thought on the newest Darna transformation of its 2022 remake that happened on its 5 th episode
that aired on August 19, 2022. I’ll evaluate the episode basing on these criteria:

Opening – Well, unlike other Pinoy TV series, Darna 2022 has no opening song or like a montage of
scenes but rather its episode starts with a recap of the previous episode. The recap shows enough
scenes that will guide viewers who missed the previous episode.

Theme – The main theme of TV series is fantasy or popularly called as a “fantaseries” here in the
Philippines. Like the previous Darnas, it also has a touch of romance and comedy to paint the series with
colors especially in serious and intense scenes.

Plot – Every Darna remake has its own version of the story, but it is always centered to the story where
the protector of the “stone” or “puting bato” passes it to its successor. What I like about this new
version of Darna is that the successor of the white stone is just her daughter. It’s a fresh plot from the
previous remakes that will give viewers a hint of a totally different plot of Darna. In its fifth episode,
Narda the daughter of the first Darna, is chosen as its next successor. This is were her deceased mother
showed up when she was in the verge of death from rescuing people in a devastating calamity. Her
mother’s spirit tells her that she was already ready to become the next protector of the stone. Then out
of nowhere, the stone appears in which she immediately grasps and swallow making her iconic
transformation after shouting the word “Darna”.

Character – The role of Darna was initially given to Liza Sobrano but due to a major accident that caused
her a serious injury, the role was transferred to Jane De Leon. Jane was a new face in the industry, only
little knows about her. People doubted if she could justify the role. In my honest opinion, after seeing
her transform, I think she was just perfect for the role, and it was evident from the clamor of praise it
gained online after the episode aired.

Dialogue – It was realistic, what I mean is, even if we are aware that it is scripted, the dialogues of the
characters seemed so spontaneous. A commendable work for the script writers.
Ending – The episode ended with a cliff-hanger, giving viewers a thirst for the next episode. After Darna
transformed, she flew and rescued people. But I think viewers wanted more exposure of her iconic
costume to give critics.

Production – Since it is a fantaseries, we expect most scenes to require CGI. People, including me, had
high expectations of its CGI since standards have been raised by Hollywood superhero movies. It was
somewhat, disappointing that over the years, there are only little improvements of the graphics of
fantaseries in the Philippines. A lot of people are still puzzled why it could not compete with the
Hollywood standard CGI. We always wonder if it only has low budget or maybe our CGI artists still lack
the skills exceed expectations.

As the most awaited episode of the series, I must say, as a fan of Darna, it was disappointing. Based on
their previous interviews, it director has always bragged that their CGI have improved but in all honesty,
we all can say that it still has not. There’s no way the episode could improve than improving its CGI and
this is also, I think, the element that failed the expectations of the viewers.
