Concept of Health

Health and Wellness

Meant By Health
• Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being
and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity
Wellness Means
• Wellness is the act of practicing healthy habits on a daily basis to
attain better physical and mental health outcomes, so that instead of
just surviving, you're thriving. To understand the significance of
wellness, it's important to understand how it's linked to health.
Health vs wellness
• A diagnosis of a sickness or illness, a propensity for a disease, and any
unforeseen injuries are all considered to be aspects of health.
• In order to achieve utmost health and well-being, wellness is an
active process of growth and change.
• It is linked to taking part in activities, making decisions about one's
lifestyle, reducing risk factors that can hurt one, putting an emphasis
on nutrition, eating a balanced diet, and adhering to spiritual
practises that promote holistic health.
Health In The Health Philosophy
• In the Constitution of the World Health Organization, approved in
1948, health is famously defined as “a state of complete physical,
mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease
or infirmity” (WHO 1948)
Importance Of Philosophy In Health
• Philosophy is an important 'feeder discipline' for health services
policy, practice and research, but there is a need to sustain an open
two-way conversation between philosophy and healthcare to avoid
any conceptual resources that are adopted from the discipline
becoming separated from the lively debates surrounding.
Concept Of Health
• “Health as the ability to adapt and to self manage, in the face of
social, physical and emotional challenges” was introduced as a new
concept of health at an invitational conference in 2011, in reaction to
the static nature and lack of realism of the 1948 WHO definition.
Reaction To The Conceptualisation
• In adaptation and self-management, the participants perceived
health as an individual asset and did not seem aware of the collective
dimension, resulting in less attention paid to primary prevention
programmes.
• Prevention was mainly mentioned in relation to primary and
secondary care; health promotion was primarily regarded as an
instrument to support individuals in adapting to a healthy lifestyle.
• However, adaptation and self-management could be supported by
assuring governance for health and wellbeing through other sectors.
Interpretation
• The new concept fits with the changing burden of disease and the
contribution of individual behaviour to health outcomes.
• The main challenge of this concept for public health policy and
practice will be to preserve primary prevention through the collective
efforts of society.
• The main task will be to incorporate essential public health
operations in the different sectors (health, housing, education, social
policy) and to integrate public health in community care programmes.
Concept Of Health: Naturalists Versus
Normativist
• Health Normativism:
Normativism is the view that health and disease are primarily, or
essentially, evaluative concepts. Advocacy of the primacy or desirability
of social norms.

• Naturalist In Health
Naturalists maintain that health and disease can be defined—at least in
part—in value-free terms, whereas normativists maintain that health
and disease are essentially value-laden concepts
#Naturalists focus on physiological and psychological states—whether
an organ or system is normal or properly functioning. Normativists
focus on whether a psychological or physiological state is valued or
disvalued
Risk Factors That Can Be Harmful
• Smoking: It is a major risk factor for lung cancer and cardiovascular
diseases.
• Drinking alcohol: It can cause liver damage, stroke, heart diseases,
and cancer.
• Unprotected sex: It spreads sexually transmitted diseases including
human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
• Extreme physical activity/sports: This may lead to broken bones and
other types of injuries.
Factors Of Affecting Health
• There are many different factors that can affect your health. These
include things like housing, financial security, community safety,
employment, education and the environment. These are known as
the wider determinants of health.

The determinants of health include:
1. Social and economic environment
2. Physical environment

Healthy Lifestyle Campaign
• The Healthy Lifestyle Campaign of the Ministry of Health began in
1991 as a response to the recognition of the central role that lifestyle
plays in health and disease. The campaign was launched on the 25th
May 1991 with the first theme ie cardiovascular diseases.
Measure Effectiveness Of Health Promotion
Measures for Evaluating Health Promotion and Disease Prevention

attainment income, and primary language spoken.
2. Biological markers - such as height, weight, body mass index (BMI),

human) that individuals, employers, families, insurance companies,
