INTRODUCTION

This writing is an attempt to study Qur’anic ayat from surah al-Fussilat (41:15) and its
relationship with the issue of not believing in Allah SWT. The objective of this writing is to
explore the meaning of not believing in Allah and how a person's faith can lead to disbelief in
Allah SWT. This writing will cover the meaning of disbelief towards Allah SWT of Qur’anic
ayat, its causes, example of not believing in the power of Allah SWT and its impact in
Muslim’s life.

DISCUSSION

Allah SWT says:

Translation: Sahih International:

As for ‘Aad, they were arrogant upon the earth without right and said, “Who is greater than
us in strength?” Did they not consider that Allah who created them was greater than them in
strength? But they were rejecting Our signs. (Surah al-Fussilat; 41:15)

a. Meaning:

One of the Prophet’s (‫ )ﷺ‬companions, ibn Abbas narrated a hadith, in which the
Prophet (‫ )ﷺ‬tells us, what it means to believe in Allah.

The Prophet (‫ )ﷺ‬said to a delegation from the tribe of ‘Abd Al-Qays, “I order you to do four
things: To believe in Allah alone. Do you know what is meant by believing in Allah alone? It
means to testify that no one has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that Muhammad (
‫ )ﷺ‬is Allah’s messenger, to perform the prayers, to pay Zakah, to fast during the month of
Ramadan, and to pay Al-Khumus (one fifth of your spoils of war).”

This hadith suggests that believing in Allah includes implementing all of the obligations
Allah has placed upon us. As well as believing in everything that He has sent down, which
includes all of the other aspects of faith. All of which Allah has informed us about through
His books and His Messenger Prophet Muhammad (‫)ﷺ‬. There are no contradictions in Islam

2
likewise there are no contradictions in regards to the definition of Iman, one aspect of faith
affirms and confirms another. It is the first and most important pillar. To believe in Allah is to
believe that there is only one God worthy of worship, with no partner, or son. This concept is
known as Tawheed.

Allah clearly explains Tawheed in the Holy Qur’an as He says in Surah Ikhlas:

“‫ َولَ ْم يَ ُك ْن لَهُ ُكفُ ًوا َأ َح ٌد‬، ‫ لَ ْم يَلِ ْد َولَ ْم يُولَ ْد‬، ‫ص َم ُد‬
َّ ‫ هَّللا ُ ال‬، ‫”قُلْ هُ َو هَّللا ُ َأ َح ٌد‬

“Say, He is Allah, [who is] One, Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, Nor
is there to Him any equivalent.

However, at the time when the prophets were sent to preach and deliver the teachings of
Islam , there were still people at that time who were haughty and did not want to worship
Allah SWT . People who do not believe in Allah are called infidels. Meanwhile, for the
behavior of denying or not believing in the existence of Allah following the religion that He
revealed through the Messengers is called kufr. Their disbelief in Allah refers to they
worshiping idols, rejecting what was conveyed by the messenger of Allah and not believing
that Allah exists and has power. It stems from the advantages and favors given by Allah to
them so that they are not grateful and arrogant towards Allah SWT . The issue of associating
with Allah is a dangerous issue because it is against the teachings of Islam. Al-Quran clearly
forbids worshiping other than Allah. Word of Allah SWT :

Meaning : Indeed, Allah has given a gift to the believers when (Allah) sent a Messenger
(Muhammad) among them from among themselves, who recited to them His verses, purified
their (souls), and taught they the Book (Al-Qur'an) and the Wisdom (Sunnah), although
before, they were really in clear error.( Surah Ali – Imran 3: 164)

b. Two Causes

The issue of worshiping other than Allah is usually found among misguided teachings and
groups. The Islamic Development Department of Malaysia (JAKIM) defines heretical groups
as any teachings or practices brought by Muslims or non-Muslims with the claim that those
teachings and practices are Islamic teachings when those teachings and practices are different
from Islam based on the Quran and Hadith as well as contrary to practice of Ahl Sunnah wa
al-Jama'ah. In general, there are two main causes that contribute to this issue :

i. First cause is kufr and disbelief against Allah SWT power.

Kufr means not believing in Allah and rejecting the teachings of the Prophet
Muhammad SAW. They do not believe in the existence of Allah who controls the
heavens and the earth and do not acknowledge the existence of a punishment in
the hereafter. Therefore they reject the law in the Quran and state that prayer is a
waste of time due to disbelief in the blessings that Allah has given because Allah
does not give them anything in punishment in this world so they are arrogant.

ii. The issue of faith towards Allah SWT of Qur’anic verse are cause Lackness of al
tawhid. In Islamic teachings, this is related to the oneness of Allah, that Allah is
one. People who study and apply the meaning of monotheism also believe in the
truth of every teaching of the Messenger. That the Messenger is a human
messenger of Allah who is given knowledge and lessons so that it can be
disseminated to the whole community. Therefore the knowledge of tawhid can
protect Muslims from the influence of other beliefs that deviate from the truth. All
muslims have to know and understand the meaning of 99 names of allah to
strenghten our iman. As stated in surah al-taubah (9:128)

There has certainly come to you a Messenger from among yourselves. Grievous to him is
what you suffer; [he is] concerned over you and to the believers is kind and merciful.

c. Example

An example that can be taken is from the story of Prophet Hud who was sent to
preach to the people of Aad. Prophet Hud was sent to warn his people, namely the
Aad people. The Aad people are the descendants of Prophet Nuh who live in Al-
Ahqaf, a region in the sandy hills of Arabia, according to QS Al-Ahqaf. The Aad tribe
is one of the oldest tribes in the world with an advanced civilization. In Al-Fajr it is
mentioned that the Aad people have tall buildings. Allah also increased the strength
and wealth of the people of Aad

However, the wealth given to the people of Aad made them greedy, self-forgetful,
and far from Allah SWT. They began to worship idols named Shamud, Shada, and
Al-Haba. Vice also rampant.God then sent Hud to improve the morals and behavior of
the people of Aad. Hud called on his people to worship Allah by showing evidence of
the oneness of God.Aad's people actually sneered and called Hud a 'crazy person'.
With patience, Hud faced all the insults given to him. Hud remained unafraid to
spread the religion of Allah and declared that punishment would soon arrive for the
disbelievers. Instead of obeying, the people of Aad actually returned to challenge Hud
to immediately show the punishment.

The arrogance of the Aad people made Allah show his power by bringing down
punishment in a number of stages. The drought made the Aad people run out of food
stocks. They were also hungry. To the people of Aad, Hud showed that drought is
Allah's punishment. However, the people of Aad still do not believe in Hud's warning
and continue to worship idols. The people of Aad who are increasingly disbelieving
make Allah SWT angry. Then, Allah sent down a black cloud that was greeted with
joy by the people of Aad. However, the cloud was not a rain cloud, but a cloud
accompanied by a strong wind that brought disaster. rotating destroying for eight days
and seven nights. The wind destroyed and wiped out the people of Aad on the face of
the earth. The bodies of the Aads were scattered and covered with sand.

5
d. Two Impacts

The issue of not believing in Allah SWT of Qur’anic verse has affected Muslim’s life
especially in the following aspects:

i. Lead to living in miserable life.

This is because they do not have guidelines for living correctly. Those who do
not believe towards Allah ,their hearts will never be at peace. Therefore, he is
easily carried away by people's invitations, easily tempted by the devil, his
views are narrow and can lead him to frustration if he faces problems. Word of
Allah SWT in Surat Yusuf (13 :87):

Meaning: "O my children, go, then search for news about Yusuf and his brother and
do not despair of God's mercy. Verily, no one despairs of God's mercy, except the
disbelieving people.

ii. Entered into hell on the Day of Resurrection

This because their doubt in believing in the oneness and existence of Allah

SWT causes them to neglect and distance themselves from Allah without

Thinking of the retribution that will befall them . Words of Allah in Surah

Al-Fussilat (41:15):

Meaning : "Then Verily We will feel a harsh punishment for the disbelievers and We
will reward them with the worst retribution for what they have done."

CONCLUSION

Based on the discussion above, it can be understood that faith in Allah SWT from the
verses of the Qur'an is very important and valuable for Muslims to have a firm faith
so that we do not deny the oneness of Allah and follow the commandments of Allah
SWT that have been revealed to the prophet to convey the teachings of God. People
also need to ask God to put their heart, soul and religion on the right path as we want
the reward of heaven in the hereafter.
