Principles of Foundation Design

(1) Design a spread footing for a column 480 mm x 480 mm in section to carry a dead load of 900 KN and
live load of 1000 KN. Allowable soil pressure at service load is 170 Kpa. Neglect the weight of soil above
the footing. Use fc’ = 20 Mpa and fy = 400 Mpa.

(2) Design a reinforced concrete footing to support a 450 mm square tied column carrying a dead load of
800 KN and a live load of 800 KN. The width of footing is limited to 2 m. Allowable soil pressure = 250
Kpa, fc’ for column = 28 Mpa, fc’ for footing = 20 Mpa, fy for all steel = 276 Mpa, longitudinal steel
column consists of 25 mm Ф bars.

(3) A 400 mm thick bearing wall of a rigid frame building carries a vertical load 300 KN dead load and 300
KN live load per linear meter, together with a moment of 90 KN m dead load and 90 KN m live load per
linear meter of length. Design the footing to support the bearing wall for a uniform soil pressure.
Allowable soil pressure = 300 KPa. Use fy = 280 MPa, fc’ = 20 MPa
