Dimensions during
Adolescence

Welcome to the second module, which is the Changes in the Health

Dimensions during Adolescence. In this part, you will be provided with
activities that will activate your prior knowledge as regards the lesson. From
there, followup activities will be given to show your tentative understandings.

As you go through the rest of the activities, all your questions about the
lesson will be clarified. All in all, your insight, considering its ampleness and
importance will be measured toward the goal of this module.

What’s New

ACTIVITY 1 : WHAT ARE THE "FIRST" IN YOUR LIFE THAT YOU VALUE
THE MOST?

Identify the most memorable moments in life. Recall the first time you did or
tried something. Write them inside the picture frame Processing Questions:
1. What made you do your life’s “first”? __________________________________
Who influenced you to achieve them? ________________________________
2. How did your life’s “first” create an impact on you as a person?
___________________________________________________________________

Having experienced life's "first" is verification that development and

improvement happened. Growth and development are two health
concepts that comprehensively depict the life of a person. This lesson will
empower you to increase a more profound comprehension of these
concepts.

City of Good Character

5 DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE
Moreover, you will find out about various growth and development
milestones that each individual encounters at various rates and times.

Congratulations! You've done the preliminary activities

successfully on your own. I think you are more than ready for
the next stage!

What is It

Growth and development is the part of health that focuses on the

following: caring for the body systems, recognizing changes throughout growth
periods, accepting maleness/femaleness, accepting physical look, accepting
one's learning style, achieving acceptable biological process tasks, concerning
the start of new life, recognizing the wants of individuals of various ages,
making ready for aging, and sharing feelings concerning dying and death
(Meeks and Heit, 1996).

The period from the first year of your life through your teenage years may
be a time of enormous growth. You learn a lot of skills and form several habits
throughout these periods of your life. You furthermore may undergo completely
different changes like physical, social, mental and emotional.

According to Erik Erickson, a scientist who studied the social and

emotional development of people from infancy to old age, people go through
eight stages of development.

Stages of Development

● Infancy Stage - From birth to 1-year-old

● Early Childhood Stage - From 1 - 3 years old
● Middle Childhood Stage - From 3 - 5 years old
● Late Childhood Stage - From 6 - 11 years old
● Adolescence Stage - From 12 to 18 years old
● Young Adulthood Stage - From 19 to 30 years old
● Middle Adulthood Stage - From 31 to 60 years old
● Maturity and Old Age Stage - From 61 to death

PUBERTY VS ADOLESCENCE

City of Good Character

6 DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE
People usually interchange the terms puberty and adolescence. However,
there are differences between them. Puberty happens before adolescence.
Puberty is the period of rapid growth and development of secondary sex
characteristics. Puberty ends once adolescence begins. Adolescence is the
period of maturation of the reproductive system marked by the onset of
females' menarche and males' production of sperm. Hormones are released
throughout this stage. Hormones are chemical substances produced by the
endocrine glands and serve as the messenger in the body.

The pituitary gland located within the brain releases the hormones that
send messages to the endocrine glands that it's time to start releasing the
hormones which will cause puberty. The pituitary gland is usually known as
the "master gland," produces the growth hormones liable for the growth and
development of an individual.

FYI!
✔ Puberty means "age of manhood," which was derived from the
Latin word "Pubertas."
✔ It involves a series of physical stages or steps that result in the
achievement of fertility and, therefore, the development of
secondary sex characteristics, the physical features related to
adult males and females.
✔ The time of puberty varies significantly among people, but, for
girls, it happens between the age of ten and fourteen and
between the age of twelve and sixteen in boys.
✔ Girls have more likely to possess precocious puberty (early
puberty) than boys
✔ Genetic and environmental factors are involved in the timing of
puberty.
✔ It is also a period once boys and girls experience fast physical
changes, and different parts of their bodies begin to mature.
✔ It may be in the course of emotional and mood changes.

FOUR STAGES OF PUBERTY:

1. Menarche – the girls' first occurrence of menstruation.

2. Adrenarche – the awakening of the adrenal gland which is responsible
for the production of hormones
3. Spermarche –is the beginning of sperm development in boys' testicles,
and also known as the boys' first ejaculation of semen
4. Gonadarche –includes sexual maturation and growth of the gonads or
reproductive organ
