Concepts of PM

Lumbreras Niño Pedro Esteban TM-602

1. Powder Metallurgy:
1. Name some of the reasons for the commercial importance of powder
metallurgy technology.
• Parts can be made to net or near net shape,
• Parts can be made with a controlled level of porosity,
• Certain metals difficult to process by other methods can be processed by pm,
and
• Pm allows the formulation of unusual alloys not easily obtained by traditional
alloying methods.
2. What are some of the disadvantages of PM methods?
• High tooling costs,
• Metal powders are expensive,
• Difficulties in storing and handling metallic powders,
• Certain limitations on part geometry imposed by the uniaxial press methods,
and (5) variations in density in a pm component can be troublesome.
3. What are some of the advantages of PM methods?
• PM parts can be mass produced to net shape or near net shape, eliminating
or reducing the need for subsequent processing.
• The PM process itself involves very little waste of material; about 97% of the
starting powders are converted to product. This compares favorably with
casting processes in which sprues, runners, and risers are wasted material in
the production cycle.
• Owing to the nature of the starting material in PM, parts having a specified
level of porosity can be made. This feature lends itself to the production of
porous metal parts, such as filters, and oil-impregnated bearings and gears.
4. What type of product would be considered to be a prospect for powder
metallurgy manufacture?

Small, high precision parts that need to have carefully controlled microstructure are
candidates for production using powder metallurgy techniques.

5. What were some of the earliest powder metallurgy products?

Some of the earliest mass-produced powder metallurgy products included coins and
medallions, platinum ingots, and tungsten wires. These were followed by carbide
cutting tool tips, nonferrous bushings, self-lubricating bearings, and metallic filters.

6. What are some of the newest technologies in powder metallurgy?

Automotive applications currently account for nearly 75% of P/M production. Other
major markets include: household appliances, recreational equipment, hand tools,
hardware items, business machines, industrial motors, and hydraulics.

7. What are some of the primary market areas for PM products?

Iron and low alloy steels are used in about 85% of powder metallurgy production.
The large amount of this metal family previously (and currently) used and the
workability and experience with working it led to the early and continued
development of powder metallurgy processes using it.

8. Which metal family currently dominates the powder metallurgy market?

Iron and low alloy steels are used in about 85% of powder metallurgy production.
The large amount of this metal family previously (and currently) used and the
workability and experience with working it led to the early and continued
development of powder metallurgy processes using it.

9. What are the four basic steps that are usually involved in making products
by powder metallurgy?

The powder metallurgy process normally consists of four steps: powder

manufacture, mixing or blending, compacting, and sintering.

10. What are some of the important properties and characteristics of metal
powders to be used in powder metallurgy?

Some important properties and characteristics of metal powders are: chemistry and
purity, particle size, size distribution, particle shape, and the surface texture of the
particles.
