n June 2010, 16-year-old Harry Styles was
manning the till at a bakery for 6 pounds
an hour while also preparing for his college
exams. Raised in Holmes Chapel, in Cheshire,
England, Styles planned to study law, sociology
or business, despite warnings from teachers
that a humanities degree might make it tough
for him to earn a living. Styles wasn’t worried.
He had a backup plan: Become the biggest
recording star in the world.
At the time, Styles was already the lead singer of a
band, White Eskimo. As for the bakery job, it was a
temporary situation that put some money in his
pocket, allowed him to interact with people and gave
him a place to make quick changes for his band’s gigs.
“He was the most polite member of staff we’ve ever
had,” shop owner Simon Wakefield said. “Customers
really took a shine to him.”
Soon, Styles would shine for another man named
Simon: Simon Cowell, the notoriously direct—and,
to some, rude—judge of the popular British talent
show The X Factor, then in its seventh season. On
the day of the audition, Styles skipped school and
headed to the Manchester Central exhibition center.
As one of more than 6,000 hopefuls, he had to wait
nearly five hours just to make it past the first cut and
get the chance to appear on television. After passing
that, he then had to face Cowell and the show’s two
other judges, for whom he sang an a cappella version
of the Stevie Wonder classic “Isn’t She Lovely?”
Former Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger
commended Styles’ “beautiful voice.” But judge
Louis Walsh dampened Styles’ enthusiasm, saying, “I
think you’re so young, I don’t think you have enough
experience or confidence yet.” A voice from the
crowd yelled out, “Rubbish!” Styles simply shot
daggers at Walsh and said, “OK.”
Cowell, who had previously judged the show Pop
Idol, interjected: “I think with a bit of vocal coaching
you actually could be very good.” Moments later,
Walsh voted no as boos rose from the crowd. “I
actually don’t think they booed you loud enough
there,” Cowell said as the audience took his cue and
booed louder. Scherzinger voted yes, leaving Cowell
with the decisive vote: another yes.
Styles was on to the next phase of the competition.
But what he—and the rest of the world—didn’t know
at the time was that there were four other singing

17-year-old Harry Styles had gone to

The X Factor’s companion show, The
Xtra Factor. The album came out in the
U.K. on Nov. 21, and went on to top the

Meanwhile, the keen interest in Styles’ romantic
interests—Flack said they were “just friends”—was a
taste of how much his entire life had changed.

Billboard 200, making 1D the first British act in
history to do so. A few weeks earlier, the group had
made its American TV debut on Today, with 10,000
screaming fans packing into Rockefeller Center. To
capitalize on the frenzy, One Direction started
working on another album and also embarked on its
first world tour; shows often sold out within

at the time—he needed a haircut to play the part.
Seeing Styles without his trademark locks was a
shock to 1D fans. But the haircut highlighted
something no one had really noticed. “He has an
