I
n June 2010, 16-year-old Harry Styles was
manning the till at a bakery for 6 pounds
an hour while also preparing for his college
exams. Raised in Holmes Chapel, in Cheshire,
England, Styles planned to study law, sociology
or business, despite warnings from teachers
that a humanities degree might make it tough
for him to earn a living. Styles wasn’t worried.
He had a backup plan: Become the biggest
recording star in the world.
At the time, Styles was already the lead singer of a
band, White Eskimo. As for the bakery job, it was a
temporary situation that put some money in his
pocket, allowed him to interact with people and gave
him a place to make quick changes for his band’s gigs.
“He was the most polite member of staff we’ve ever
had,” shop owner Simon Wakefield said. “Customers
really took a shine to him.”
Soon, Styles would shine for another man named
Simon: Simon Cowell, the notoriously direct—and,
to some, rude—judge of the popular British talent
show The X Factor, then in its seventh season. On
the day of the audition, Styles skipped school and
headed to the Manchester Central exhibition center.
As one of more than 6,000 hopefuls, he had to wait
nearly five hours just to make it past the first cut and
get the chance to appear on television. After passing
that, he then had to face Cowell and the show’s two
other judges, for whom he sang an a cappella version
of the Stevie Wonder classic “Isn’t She Lovely?”
Former Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger
commended Styles’ “beautiful voice.” But judge
Louis Walsh dampened Styles’ enthusiasm, saying, “I
think you’re so young, I don’t think you have enough
experience or confidence yet.” A voice from the
crowd yelled out, “Rubbish!” Styles simply shot
daggers at Walsh and said, “OK.”
Cowell, who had previously judged the show Pop
Idol, interjected: “I think with a bit of vocal coaching
you actually could be very good.” Moments later,
Walsh voted no as boos rose from the crowd. “I
actually don’t think they booed you loud enough
there,” Cowell said as the audience took his cue and
booed louder. Scherzinger voted yes, leaving Cowell
with the decisive vote: another yes.
Styles was on to the next phase of the competition.
But what he—and the rest of the world—didn’t know
at the time was that there were four other singing

n Nov. 17, 2011, the night before One

dropped in Ireland, reports swirled that
17-year-old Harry Styles had gone to
dinner two nights earlier with Caroline
Flack, 14 years his senior and a host on
The X Factor’s companion show, The
Xtra Factor. The album came out in the
U.K. on Nov. 21, and went on to top the
charts in more than 16 countries.
Meanwhile, the keen interest in Styles’ romantic
interests—Flack said they were “just friends”—was a
taste of how much his entire life had changed.
Like the Beatles had in 1964, One Direction set
about conquering America next. The band signed a

Billboard 200, making 1D the first British act in
history to do so. A few weeks earlier, the group had
made its American TV debut on Today, with 10,000
screaming fans packing into Rockefeller Center. To
capitalize on the frenzy, One Direction started
working on another album and also embarked on its
first world tour; shows often sold out within
minutes. In November 2012, 1D’s follow-up LP, Take
Me Home, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and
sold an astounding 540,000 copies in its first week.

continued on as a foursome. In a 2019 interview with
Entertainment Tonight, Styles spoke candidly about
Malik’s departure. “We were sad,” Styles said. “We
didn’t realize he wasn’t enjoying it that much.”
In August 2015, the group announced it was going
on indefinite hiatus following the release of Made in
the A.M., its fifth album. The boys played their last
show on Dec. 13, 2015, during The X Factor finale.
A.M. was the only 1D album not to reach No. 1 on the
Billboard 200. Still, all five of the band’s records went
at least platinum. After five years—with a new album
released in five successive Novembers—and four
world tours, One Direction appeared to be over for
good. “If you’re shortsighted, you can think, ‘Let’s
just keep touring,’ but we all thought too much of the
group than to let that happen,” Styles told Rolling
Stone in 2017. “You realize you’re exhausted, and you
don’t want to drain people’s belief in you.”
Through it all, Styles always expressed his
appreciation for the band’s admirers because “they
completely changed our lives.” Ever gracious—a feat
for any superstar—he set his sights on his future as a
solo artist. As everyone would soon discover, fans
were ready to come along for the ride.

August, to the surprise of many 1D fans, Harry had
admitted to having taken psychedelics for the first
time. (He listened to Paul and Linda McCartney’s

Soon, however, Styles had to deal with sobering
realities. Caroline Flack, with whom he’d shared a
romantic interlude in 2011, committed suicide in her
London flat in February 2020. A month later, the
COVID-19 pandemic shut down most of the world.
As Black Lives Matter protests enveloped the U.S.
that summer following the deaths of Breonna Taylor
and George Floyd, Harry tweeted his support: “I do
things every day without fear because I am
privileged, and I am privileged because I am white.”
It was an eye-opening statement coming from
someone who was enjoying so much success.
“Watermelon Sugar” reached No. 1 on the Billboard

MAY 19, 2017: As part of the promotional push for

his solo debut, Styles made a secret appearance at
the famed West Hollywood club the Troubadour.
He and surprise guest Stevie Nicks sang Styles’
“Two Ghosts” and then dove into Fleetwood Mac’s
“Landslide.” They closed their jam with Styles
channeling Don Henley on Nicks’ “Leather and
Lace.” A self-proclaimed fan of Nicks, Harry told the
audience: “She’s the queen of anything.”

APRIL 15, 2017: Styles played Saturday Night Live,

performing “Sign of the Times” as his opening
number. For his second song, he launched into a
moving version of “Ever Since New York”—the
perfect song for the show.

JUNE 22, 2018: At Madison Square Garden, Styles

invited country star Kacey Musgraves onstage for a
rousing cover of Twain’s hit “You’re Still the One,” a
precursor to his duet with Shania in 2022.

at the time—he needed a haircut to play the part.
Seeing Styles without his trademark locks was a

ONE DIRECTION’S MUSIC…
“I think it’s a shame he felt that way ... but I never
wish anything but luck to anyone doing what they
love. If you’re not enjoying something and need to do
something else, you absolutely should do that. I’m
glad he’s doing what he likes.”

HARRY (BEFORE) ON NOT HAVING A GIRLFRIEND…

“People often ask me, ‘Why don’t you have a
girlfriend?’ Then I smile and say, ‘I have thousands.
Some just haven’t met me yet.’”

HARRY ON FAME…
“One of the reasons why I don’t like the word
famous, because then people use it afterwards and
go like, ‘He used to be famous. Well, he’s not famous
anymore.’ It’s this weird thing. I was a guy before,
I was the same guy during, and I’m the same guy
afterwards, but people think that they can label
your life.”

HARRY ON BEAUTY…
“Don’t choose the one who is beautiful to the world.
But rather, choose the one who makes your world
beautiful.”

HARRY ON STEVIE NICKS…

“She’s always there for you. She knows what you
need: advice, a little wisdom, a blouse, a shawl. She’s
responsible for more running mascara—including
my own—than all the bad dates in history.”

HARRY ON FALLING IN LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT…

“I wouldn’t say I could fall in love at first sight, but
maybe I just haven’t done that yet.”

HARRY ON ACTING…

different, and movies are definitely where I feel most
out of my comfort zone.”

HARRY ON SOCIAL MEDIA…

“I can make your girlfriend scream louder than you

HARRY ON FAMILY AND FRIENDS…

“I can see how you could get dragged into the bad
