TASK 1

Watch and listen to a video entitled “Barriers to effective listening”. Fill in the blanks with
appropriate answers.

a.) The key to improving listening skills is to overcome the barriers to effective listening.
b.) Two of the common barriers to effective listening are content of the message and
inappropriate feedback.
c.) Anticipate important message when you are listening to an unfamiliar content.
d.) You should concentrate on the message itself and not on the person delivering the
message.
e.) Try to eliminate distractions if possible if you find yourself distracted with the
environment around you.
f.) If you are listening to an unclear message, ask for clarification.

TASK 2

Answer the following questions:

1. What distinguishes listening from hearing?


Hearing is the process, function, or power of perceiving sound. Listening means to pay
attention to sound, to hear something with thoughtful attention and to give consideration.

2. Identify the three mains’ barriers to listening. Which of these barriers is most
problematic for you? What can you do about it?
Content of the message, external distractions, and clarity of language. External distraction
because it makes me lose focus and did not understand what is being discuss or talk. Need to
find a quiet place or comfortable places to hear and listen what is being spoken.
3. What are strategies that help hold your listeners’ attention during your speech?
Make sure the topic is interesting and can attract the listener interest to hear or listen the
speech and make sure the topic is easy enough to understand and the listener can relate to it.

4. How do your listening behaviours change in the following situations:

• At a concert – Passive listening


• In class – Active listening
• At the dinner table with your parents – Competitive listening
• In a doctor’s office – Active listening

• If a room is too dark, it can make us sleepy
• If the class/room is near with construction site or road, it will make us
losing focus and interfere us from listening the lecture
• If the room is too cold, it can distract us from listening

5. List five tips discussed in class for becoming a more effective listener.
• Face the lecturer/speaker and have eye contact with them
• Don’t interrupt when someone give a speech
• Ask relevant questions if we don’t understand what the speaker mean
• Having an interesting talk/speech can make the listener more focus
• Listen to the words and try to picture what the speaker is saying

i. Are ‘listening” and “hearing” the same thing? Why or why not?
Hearing and listening are not the same thing. Hearing is the ability to perceive sounds
through ear, while listening is observing others behaviour that can add meaning to the
message.
ii. People screen our or change the intended meaning of what they hear in more than
70 percent of communications. Do you agree? What does this tell us?
Agree because we must overcome the barriers effective listening. This tell us that we
cannot fully focus when someone is talking. We will be a bit distracted and losing focus and
just hearing what the speaker is talking.
iii. “We were given two ears, but only one mouth, because listening is twice as hard
as talking.” Do you agree? Why or why not?
Agree because we listen to obtain information, understand, enjoyment and to learn.
Without good listening skills we can miss out on very important information.
