MIDTERM TEST OF RESEARCH ON ELT THE SIXTH SEMESTER STUDENTS

OF ACADEMIC YEAR OF 2021/2022, THURSDAY APRIL 07, 2022

Please answer all of the questions bellow!

1.   What is the scientific approach? (10 points)

The process of obtaining a reliable solution to a problem through planned and systematic data
collection, analysis and interpretation of data (Mouly, 1970). Research is a systematic
approach to finding answers to questions (Fatch and Farhady, 1982). Another definition says
research is a systematic activity to get answers to questions through the scientific method,
and research can also be interpreted as one way to get knowledge by deductive and inductive.
Another definition: a research is a systematic approach to finding answers to questions by
collecting data and analyzing them. Finding answers to questions can be in the form of
revealing new knowledge and practical solving problems

2. How can you get a topic for your research project? (10 points)

Before conducting research we need to know the topic by looking for the problem, to find it
we need to read research reports, attend seminars, discuss, ask people who are in authority in
a matter and it can also be from our own experience. After we find the problem we must also
see the feasibility and suitability of the problem. The suitability of the suitability is
considered: 1. from the direction of the problem, namely the extent to which this research
will contribute to: a. theory development in that field, b. practical problem solving; 2. from
the direction of the prospective researcher, namely whether this problem is in accordance
with the researcher, meaning whether the problem is acceptable for him when viewed from:
a. available costs b. usable time c. available tools and equipment d. provision of theoretical
abilities e. mastery of the methods required

3. There are several things to consider in determining the research title. Explain these things and
give example and reasons! (20 points)
The title should describe the content of the research, but be brief, clear and comprehensive. In
the title you can see the variables and the subject and are written in phrases with effective
wording. If the title has a sub-heading, it is necessary to add a colon between the sub-
headings. In choosing the title, (`1) which is considered is the research contribution given.
Research without donations is useless. Donations can be a contribution to the addition of the
repertoire of knowledge and can be in the form of a practical contribution, namely a direct
contribution to the community that can be put into practice immediately. (2) the ability of
researchers to carry out both in terms of scientific ability (analyzing data), costs, and whether
the data can be collected by researchers. Example : Many students, both undergraduate and
postgraduate students, in writing a thesis or thesis want the research population of their own
school, so that it is easy to collect data. This is okay as long as the title is not just a
description. Reason : If it's just a description, it's okay if the school is an outstanding school, a
school that is extraordinary in something, for example a few years ago the Adventist High
School in Doyobaru got the highest score in English in all of Papua. Such schools are worth
examining why their English is so great. This research is included in a case study. But if your
school is just mediocre, it doesn't deserve to be the object of a case study. If the description
should use a large population (survey), such as 'The ability of students to master the English
language listed in the syllabus in Jayapura City', 'Method of teaching English teachers in
Jayapura Regency', 'Analysis of English UAN exam questions', etc.

4 Why is it possible before doing your research to read many research reports, articles in
scientific journals and books in the field of EFL? (20 points).

Because, the problem is the gap between das sollen and das sein; there is a difference between
what should be and what is in reality, between what is needed and what is available or
between hope and reality. And at the end of research reports, suggestions for further research
are often included because the research is never complete. Authority holders both in
government and in certain scientific fields can be a source of problems

5. Mr. Takimai wants to know whether giving a lot of quizzes to English Department students of
Cenderawasih University during the listening course can increase the achievement of the
students on their listening. (40 points)

a. What is the best title of the research that Mr. Takimai intends to conduct?

IMPROVING LISTENING ABILITY TO ENGLISH DEPARTMENT OF STUDENTS AT

CENDERAWASIH UNIVERSITY THROUGH MEDIA QUIZ

b. What kind of research that Mr. Takimai will be conducted?

Descriptive Research This research is a study that describes the state (status) of a
phenomenon at the present time. Best (1981:25) explains that "descriptive research
describes what is" which includes describing, recording, analyzing, and interpreting the
state of something that exists at this time. This study collects data using various tools
such as observations, questionnaires, interviews, tests, etc., and then analyzes the data
followed by making generalizations. There are several studies that are included in
descriptive research (in a broad sense) such as case studies, ex post facto, ethnographic
research, descriptive research (in a narrow sense), surveys and others

. c. How many variables are there in this research? What are they?

d. What kind or research instrument that Mr. Takimai uses in collecting data?

This type of qualitative descriptive research, the type of instrument used is a questionnaire
filled out by students majoring in English and an observer sheet filled out by colleagues.
