How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply:

☐ Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the student and mostly
practice based.

☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic of
learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The teacher facilitates
the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.

☐ Problem-based and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems and completing projects to
demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared outside of the classroom.
(Note: This objective could be reached by displaying the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing
it via an outside source.)

Lesson idea implementation:

In preparation for this activity, the class will make a trip to the library and individually select books
for independent reading. Students will be asked to take notes about interesting Characters,
moments, settings, and events and to make a little note about what they noticed and the page
number. For fourth grade, this can be a notebook sheet of paper or digital notes page with one or
two sentence notes.

After finishing their books, after a predetermined amount of days have passed, students will be
asked to pick the most interesting part of their book. It could be their favorite moment, character,
setting, or other element. Students will have the option of creating a short podcast episode or short
video meant to inspire classmates to check out and read the showcased book. Students will cite at
least one page number and read an excerpt from their book.

The educator will be leading the planning and pre-production stages. The production stage will be
student led. The educator will play the created projects of students who are comfortable having ther
work presented, and all will be published to the rest of the class. Feedback can be gathered after
each presentation or after all presentations from classmates, allowing the lesson to conclude with a
conversation about peer work.

Managing student learning:

Students will be active in their own learning from the very beginning as they will have agency in
selecting their book in the school library. Students will practice active social learning as they engage
their peers by sharing their learning with the intent to inspire future learning.

The educator will set a day for in-class brainstorming and planning a set amount of time after the
library visit day. The elapsed amount of time will be tailored to your class. For example, A library visit
on Monday the 1st and an in-class brainstorming, planning, and story-boarding day on Monday the
7th allows for 1 week of at-home reading including a weekend. Including a weekend is highly
recommended for independent reading assignments. Students will be asked to have the storyboard
finished before the end of class. The activity on this day will include visual instructions for creating
the podcast or video at home and an example of each.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Reflection:
This lesson allows for multiple means of action and expression. Students will have more than one
way to demonstrate proficiency over the standard. Since students will be producing either audio
podcasts are videos, students will also be experimenting with producing information in multiple
forms of representation as well.

Reflection: This lesson enhances student learning by asking students to reflect on their reading,
evaluate it, share their ideas, and then engage with each other’s ideas. I look forward to the end of
the lesson, where students are listing to or watching each other's book reviews. The post-publishing
stage, where students are engaging with the different ideas of their peers, creates diversity of
thought and cements understanding.
