UNIT 4

ORDINAL NUMBERS

These numbers, we add the endings “-st” as in “first“, “-nd” as in “second“, “-rd” as
in “third“, and “-th” for numbers that don’t end in 1, 2 or 3, with the exceptions of
11th (eleventh), 12th (twelfth) and 13th (thirteenth).

For example:

Cristina won the 2nd (second) prize.

I was born on the 29th (twenty-ninth) of November.

An Ordinal Number tells us the position of something in a list.

1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and so on.

Example: In this picture the girl is 2nd:

And the two pups are 3rd and 4th.

1. DATES

With dates we tend to use ordinal numbers (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.), although we may
write only the cardinal form of the number. Also, the number specifying the year is
normally pronounced as two separate two-figure numbers. In general terms, we do
as follows:

Examples:

– Write: Monday, July 21st, 2015.

– Say: Monday, July twenty-first, twenty fifteen.
