Basic shaft sealing needs

Good enough to But not too much

Smoothness maintain contact with the Absence of small lubricant pockets
seal primary lip will starve the seal lip of lubrication
leading to excess wear or “Stick-
Slip”
Roughness Provide pockets to hold High roughness will shorten seal life
lubricant
Hardness Reduce possible damage
from handling
Burr free lead-ins Reduce possible seal lip
damage
Minimal shaft out-of- Maintain seal and shaft which can influence the ability of
roundness or lobing contact to insure against seal lip to follow the shaft contour
fluid leakage
NO MACHINE LEAD(*) Hydrodynamic mechanism which will
auger or pump the fluid from under
the seal lip

(*) Machine lead is a directional surface pattern

How customers repair shaft without sleeve

After removing the shaft from Potential issues

machine: • Repair not concentric to shaft
• Re-metallise and grind shaft • Machine lead
• Machine shaft to smaller size • Need new seal size
• Try and find a new seal lip wear spot • Long repair time
without removing shaft • New seal rides in old groove

Smaller shaft size

5 "RMA" is the "Rubber Manufacturers Association". SKF and other major sealing suppliers are members and contribute to these standards.
. PTFE formulations used for lip seals are generally more aggressive and abrasive to the shaft than standard elastomeric lip seals; therefore, they require a hardened sealing
surface. For best results, SKF recommends a shaft hardness of 55 to 65 HRC. If this recommendation is not adhered to, premature shaft scoring may result. If the hardness
cannot be achieved, a less aggressive material may be available.
