Cala Inequality

The document provides information about a CALA component on solving linear inequalities for a mathematics O-level topic on algebra inequalities. Students will formulate inequalities based on a word problem about a poultry farmer maximizing profits from selling chickens and turkeys. They must then select a suitable scale, draw the graph of the inequalities, and use the graph to determine the maximum income amount. The teacher will assess students on correctly formulating inequalities, drawing the graph, interpreting the graph, and other criteria.

LEARNER CALA GUIDE [15 MARKS]

SUBJECT MATHEMATICS

LEVEL O LEVEL

CALA TYPE PROBLEM SOLVING

TOPIC ALGEBRA - INEQUALITIES

SUBTOPIC LINEAR PROGRAMMING

BACKGROUND

Sometimes we are faced with complex decisions to make. Mathematical skills can be applied
to solve such problems. For example Mr. Vilakalidli, a poultry farmer keeps chickens and
turkeys and wants to sell some of his stock to raise money to buy some feeds. He wants to
sell at least 5 chickens and not more than 8 turkeys. The number of turkeys he wishes to
sell should be equal or more than the number of chickens. A chicken costs $6 and a turkey
costs $ 8. Let x be the number of chickens and y be the number of turkeys. How many of
each does he need to sell to get the maximum amount.

Activities

You are required to

 Formulate inequalities from word problems [6]

 Select a suitable scale to plot the graph & Draw the graph [7]
 Interpret the graph to determine the maximum income [2]
How you will be assessed

The teacher will assess you on

 Correct formulation of inequalities

 use of a suitable scale
