TELINGA PRO-8 MK2 Stereo DAT Mic - QUICK GUIDE / MANUAL

Thank you for purchasing a Telinga Microphone!

Telinga started manufacturing Parabolic Microphones in 1981. The initial "goal" was to complete the first portable parabolic reflector system
capable of recording wildlife in mono and stereo - without using multiple cables or preamplifiers.

All our Parabolic Microphones are designed to be reliable, light-weight and very easy to use. Great care has been taken to solve the most common problems
with wildlife recording - wind and handling noise, as well as inherent noise from the microphone and amplifiers. Telinga designs are developed in co-operation
with wildlife film makers, ornithologists and researchers in the field of bio-acoustics.

Package includes:

1) PRO-8 MK2 handle and cable (1) Stereo DAT Mic with mounting kit (1) Foldable Reflector/Dish
Additional accessories (may be included in your order) : Tripod Mount, Soft Case, Windshield (for dish)

RECOMMENDED: QUALITY HEADPHONES!

REQUIRED: +48 V PHANTOM POWER (FROM A RECORDER OR PREAMPLIFIER etc)

IMPORTANT NOTES

1. NEVER CONNECT THE MICROPHONE BY ITSELF, WITHOUT USING A TELINGA HANDLE.

2. NEVER POINT (OR LEAVE) THE SYSTEM FACING DIRECTLY TOWARDS SUN - THE MICROPHONE FOAM MIGHT BURN.
3. DO NOT LEAVE THE SYSTEM RESTING WITH MICROPHONE AGAINST THE GROUND.

What is a Telinga "Parabolic System"?

The easy way to describe a Telinga Parabolic System* is by making the comparison to a Professional Photographers System Camera: with
it´s fitting "dedicated" parts, all compatible and interchangeable, the Telinga handle (with cable) in this comparison is the equivalent to the Camera "housing"
while the microphones and dedicated parabolic reflectors being the "lens" and "objective(s)"

This has several advantages: 1. you may bring several Telinga microphones with you, without necessarily bring a second dish, cable or
handle 2. If you loose or damage one part of the system, you don´t have to purchase a complete new set of products.
3. when a new Telinga microphone, handle or dish is out on the market - you may upgrade by purchasing a separate product only. This
protects your investment.

Why STEREO?
With the Teliga Stereo DAT Mic - you will be able to isolate and record your source or "target" in it´s surroundings, with the focus of the
parabolic reflector in mono while the surrounding ambience (or a group of objects) will be presented in stereo. You don´t have to use multiple cables,
preamplifiers or such, the simple way of connecting your Telinga is directly to the recorders XLR inputs - with the Telinga XLR (Y) Cable from the bottom of your
Telinga PRO-8 MK2 handle.

FOCUS POSITIONS (A) : WHEN SYSTEM IS ASSEMBLED - PLACE THE STEREO DAT MIC ALL THE WAY IN (TOWARDS YOU)
UNTIL STOP FOR MAXIMUM AMPLIFICATION.

FOCUS POSITIONS (B) : PLACE THE STEREO DAT MIC WITH END OF MICROPHONE NEAR TO THE DISH EDGE -
BUT NOT OUTSIDE IT - IT SHOULD NOT TOUCH GROUND IF YOU DROP THE SYSTEM. IN THIS POSITION YOU HAVE
A "BLEND" OF AMPLIFICATION FROM FOCUS AND STEREO AMBIENCE.

IMPORTANT! You may also use the handle and microphone connected without the dish, or together with the smaller compact dish (coming
Spring 2015)

QUICK START: SEE ASSEMBLING BELOW.

MAKE SURE YOUR RECORDERS PHANTOM POWER (+48 V) IS ENABLED (ON)

IMPORTANT: PLEASE CHECK THE RECORDERS INPUT (REC) LEVEL & HEADPHONES (OUTPUT) LEVEL ON YOUR
RECORDER BEFORE CONNECTING HEADPHONES! IT IS NOT RECOMMENDED TO USE THE TELINGA INSIDE AS
THE RISK OF ACOUSTICAL FEEDBACK IS HIGH!

ASSEMBLING
Start by using your PRO-8 MK2 and MICROPHONE without the dish.

1. Connect the microphone and it´s mounting kit (gray tube, gray ring, black ring) to the handle, and secure it with the large handle knob.
2. Connect the XLR-plugs to your recorder / preamp or mixer.
3. Set your input and output levels and connect the headphones to your recorder.
4. set it in "REC" position or "monitor" with the phantom power on.

IMPORTANT: Your Telinga is designed for outdoor use, connected to battery powered equipment only.
If you use it indoors, connected to mains operated equipment, "hum" may occur.

IMPORTANT! FROM THE PICTURE ABOVE . HANDLE POSITION (1) IS TOWARDS YOU

IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND THESE POSITIONS AS THEY VERY MUCH AFFECT THE SOUND

SPECIFICATIONS:

The PRO-8 MK2 and Stereo DAT Mic has an Equivalent Noise Factor of aprx 12 dBA only. Thereby, it does great justice to the dynamic range
of a modern recorder. The focused sound will be picked up in mono while the background will come in stereo. Handling and wind noise
suppression is excellent. The over-all sound characteristics of the DAT Mic, is a "soft" high and a "big" and amazingly transparent mid and low.
Without the parabola, it is a good multi-purpose stereo microphone for small-signal use. The stereo sound resembles the stereo of a "dummy
head". There is no "hole" between left and right. When using the parabola the recording target can move from one side to the other without
"ping-pong" effects. The inherent noise of the Telinga electronic is very low. At normal listening level, as if you made an interview, you should
hear no electronic noise at all. If you do, you probably have head-phones of low quality, or designed for "Pop"-music. Such ones, even
some high-class ones, emphasize all sounds which resembles cymbals and high-hats. And electronic noise....

During our design work, we use Beyer DT 990 / 880 headphones for reference. A great alternative is the Sennheiser HD - series.

MOUNTING THE DISH

1. Place the parabolic reflector (dish) in (-between) the black ring of the tube and the gray ring (inside) the dish. See ASSEMBLING above.
2. You don´t have to fasten anything with great force just make sure the complete system is secured and tight - when everything is assembled correctly, you will
have no system noise or interference when recording.

3. FOCUS POSITIONS (A) : PULL THE STEREO DAT MIC ALL WAY IN (TOWARDS YOU) UNTIL STOP FOR MAXIMUM AMPLIFICATION.
4. FOCUS POSITIONS (B) : PLACE THE STEREO DAT MIC WITH END OF MICROPHONE NEAR TO THE DISH EDGE - BUT NOT SIDE TO SIDE
(IT SHOULD NOT TOUCH GROUND IF YOU DROP THE SYSTEM) IN THIS POSITION YOU HAVE MORE OF A "BLEND"
OF FOCUS AMPLIFICATION AND STEREO AMBIENCE.

After some practice, you will be able to locate a sound without using your eyes. This is important, as experienced Telinga users often close their eyes while recording, concentrating
on the sound they hear in the headphones. By doing that, they often find the "nicest" sound - for example of a bird - a bit above, or aside from it. Every environment is acoustical -
even a tree is a studio! - and the best results are not always the ones achieved with the bird exactly in focus.

Apart from "everyday" recording, and apart from what the Telinga is designed for - Wildlife Recording, - it has been used for a variety of very special purposes. Because of it's
very low noise level, it has been used for CD production supplying the film-industry with sound-effects, like the sounds from a pen writing on a paper, or even the sounds
which can be heard very close to the ash of a glowing cigarette! It is often used for step sounds and some people claim that it is the best microphone ever made for backgrounds and
atmos.

But the Telinga has also been used to locate broken bearings of fans over a huge industry building and to locate echoes in a concert hall. Reporters use it to record politicians and
others, only by pointing with the Telinga at the PA-loudspeakers, often hundred meters away, and it is frequently used together with video at conferences and press-meetings, when
established techniques cannot be used for practical or economical reasons.

FOLDING THE DISH

Folding the dish is very easy, and you may fold it over and over again for traveling.
A 3 year international warranty means you don´t have to worry the dish will break!
PACKING THE COMPLETE SYSTEM IN THE SOFT CASE

Pack your complete Telinga setup with the handle, microphone and cables protected inside the rolled dish.
After travelling the dish will retain it´s shape quickly. Complete weight including cables is only 1.2 kilo / 2.6 lbs
(or less depending on model!)

IMPORTANT: IT IS RECOMMENDED YOU PLACE THE MICROPHONE, HANDLE AND CABLE ETC.
INSIDE THE LARGE GRAY WINDSHIELD INSIDE THE CASE OR USE SOME PADDING IN BETWEEN.
THIS TO PREVENT SCRATCHES OR DAMAGES TO THE EQUIPMENT.
