The laydown/trench areas were the pipes to be unloaded should be survey and will be set out. Site
investigation will be carried out prior to ground preparation.
Mark the laydown/trench area with marking powder using a string wire for proper alignment.
Warning tape to be fixed at the proposed lay down area ground preparation.
All required material, manpower, tools and equipment’s should available during the ground
preparation.
Excavate the lay down / trench areas to required level. The spoil soil/gravel will be deposited away
from laydown areas.
If required suitable backfilling material will be provided, level the ground and manually prepare the
surface free of large stones or blocks.
All unsuitable material will be removed and replaced with suitable filling materials.
The ground will be compacted by plate compactor or roller and laydown area will be inspected prior
to unloading of pipes (where applicable).
Ensure lay down areas is flat and levelled for temporary storage of pipes.
The pipes stacking shall be placed as per manufacturer recommendations.
The pipe transportation will be carried out in accordance with the traffic management plan for this
project. All trucks to be utilised will be in safe working condition with service/maintenance records
available for inspection.
All drivers will receive a transportation induction prior the commencement of pipes delivery. The
induction will outline the health, safety and environmental requirements for this project.
Pipe lifting operations will be performed using a crane of suitable capacity for the weight of pipe to be
moved and the maximum radius from centre of slew (fig.1). Crane will be operated/conducted by a
certified operator and will comply with the manufacturers recommendation.

CONTRACTOR proposing to lift pipe with slings and adequate pipe hooks.
If the system slings-pipe-hook is not practicable CONTRACTOR will use a spreader bar with belt
slings, two-legged chain will be used.
Two pipe handlers, with tail ropes, shall be used.
All lifting tackle (i.e. spreader bar, slings, chains, etc.) will be tested / inspected to statutory
requirements, a record will be filed at the site office.
Only certified slinger / banksmen will be utilised for this task.
Pipe will be transported on a flatbed trailer; adequate secured rounded bolsters must be used under
the pipe.
The lead-board shall be as high as the third pipe tier. Fabric or rubber shall be used between the
pipes.
The pipes will be loaded onto wood supports positioned approximately 3m distance.
The sleepers (fig.3) shall be positioned only on the basis of the truck.
They will have a minimum width of 12cm and minimum thickness of 5cm.
The wedges will be 10cm high with a width compatible with the stock or sleeper where they
will be laid.
The pointed end of the wedge will be appropriate to the pipe diameter or concrete coating.
Each wedge will be attached with at least 2 nails driven in vertically.
The nails must reach the bottom of the vehicle or enter the wooden lining to a depth of at
least 2/3 of the wood's thickness.

At the delivery point, the pipes shall be off-loaded by Crane or Side boom tractor with an extended boom,
properly equipped with a spreader bar and sling sleeves duly certified for weight to be lifted.
At both edges of the sling, lifting hooks are attached, adequately shaped and padded to avoid
damage to pipe bevels.
The pipes will be off-loaded one by one and laid on wooden skids under both ends of the pipes.
Special care shall be taken to avoid damage on coated pipes.
o This will be achieved by ensuring that the boom of the off-loading tractor is coated with soft
material.
Furthermore, care shall be exercised to ensure that violent impact of the off-loading sling hooks with
the surface of the coated is avoided during handling and stringing. In addition, the pipe shall have
rested on sack of soft loose material which in turn rest on wooden skids.
On the route where trenching is already complete, pipes will be strung at a distance of 2 meters
between the outside of the pipe and the edge of the trench to ensure safe working space for the
mainline crew.
Pipe Stringing will be carried out using a craned equipped with a spreader bar and 2 tag lines or side
boom with extended boom for stringing operation.
As an alternative or if required, an excavator equipped with vacuum exhausting system and with a
capacity as site requirement.
Coated pipes shall be stacked clear of the ground with minimum 150mm ground clearance to ensure bottom
row of pipes remain free from surface water contact.
The stacked pipes shall be slightly inclined to prevent driving rain collecting inside the pipes.
Lay down areas shall be flat and levelled for temporary storage of pipes.
The pipes shall be placed over berms of screened sand or soft material covered with polyethylene
sheeting or by using skids and chocks.
A pair, of three stockpiling berms per pipe length will be prepared to a height of approx. 500mm and spaced
in such a manner to provide not more than 2 meters’ overhang at either end.
Pipes shall be stacked so that the uncoated bevelled ends are in line at one end, thus making the differences
in lengths clearly noticeable.
