CAPSULE RESEARCH PROPOSAL

Proposed Research Title: The impact of pandemic in marble industry and in marble workers.
Background/Rationale: As the corona virus pandemic rapidly sweeps across the world, it is show beyond
doubt that marble industry is affected. Marble is a stone with a firm
crystalline structure and slightly porosity. It is currently being obtained
from open cast quarries. Marble has numerous applications for
structural and decorative purposes. There’s a machine use for cutting,
crafting, polishing, and engraving marble. After the marble craft finish
product, it can be polished to improve its shine and common and
attractive for building applications. On a polished finish product,
etching is overwhelming after years of use; the entire surface can be re
polished, bringing back to its original beauty. Marble is considered the
stone for emperor and gods. Marble is beautiful no one can dispute
that.

The one who works in marble, a workman who cuts, craft, carve, hew, and
polishes marble is the marble worker. All marble handicrafts items are
crafted by skilled craftsmen using simple tools or a machine. Most
crafts require the development of skills and application of patience but
can be learned virtually by anyone.

Right now, for the handicraft marble workers, it looks like the hardest and longest
for survival with no hope in sight. The timing could not have been
worse. A falling economy, unemployment, reduced spending, the
pandemic and subsequent lockdown have had devastating on the
marble handicrafts sector. Most of their products are “non-essential”
which could be the reason why their alarming situation is getting very
little visibility despite the call for “vocal for local”.

Tourism is one of the sectors most affected by Covid-19 pandemic, impacting

livelihood. It is one who supports marble crafts and it is one of the
chanced of the marble workers for them to have an income. As of now,
because of Covid-19 pandemic, tourism has stop. Transportation was
prohibited in this time of pandemic. Marble workers have suffered
from the consequences of Covid-19 pandemic. They only know how to
make marble decorations and other marble products. People who only
have this works have no source of income, is there other way to make
them survive every day?

Marble is the product that needs a buyer for them to live, for them to have an
income, but now buyers as well as the sellers are cautious of getting
sick of Covid-19 because of the thought that they might get infected
through their transactions Marble workers need a help from the
government, for them to start over their lives without struggling just to
have a food to eat every day. While Covid-19 cases are decreasing,
tourism must be back and the transportation goes back like before. If
tourism is now allowed it is the right time for the marble workers to
shine again.
