Working with Shapes

At the end of this lesson, the students should be able to:
1. Insert shapes in a document.
2. Format shapes using the Drawing tools.

Shapes can add visual appeal and clarity to the information in the
document.

What Is It

 What are the steps in inserting shapes in a document?


 How do we format shapes using the Drawing tools?

Shape Insertion
To insert a shape from document, we:
1. Select the Insert tab, then choose Shapes in the Illustrations Group.

2. Select the desired shape in the menu for the different shapes.

3. Drag the selected shape to the document.

The shape will appear in the document.

Shape Formatting
We use the Drawing Tools Contextual Format tab to format a shape.

To do this, we:

1. Select the shape in the document.
2. Select the Drawing tools Contextual Format tab to display the
formatting commands.
3. Choose the tool needed to format the shape.

The Drawing Tools Contextual Format tab is divided into four (6) groups:

1. Insert Shapes group


To add and edit a shape and draw a text box, we use the tools in the
Insert Shapes group.

Look at the examples below. This is how the shape looks after changing it
into another shape:

2. Shape Styles group


We use these tools to apply styles to a shape.

Look at the examples below. This is how the shape looks after applying a
shape style:

3. WordArt Styles group
This group is not related to formatting shapes. With the exception of
Text Effects, the whole area remains grayed out until text is typed.

4. Text tools
To add text in the shape, we:
a. Right click the shape, then choose Add Text from the options.

b. Type the text inside the shape.

c. Use the Font group commands on the Home tab to format the text.
To change the direction and alignment of the text in the
shape, we use Text tools.

Look at the examples below. This is how the text in the shape looks after
changing its direction:

5. Arrange group

To arrange the shape, we use the Arrange tools.

Look at the examples below. This how the shape looks after rotating it:

6. Size group
To format the size of the shape, we use the Size tools.

Let us explore the size tools. Look at the example below. This is how the
shape looks after resizing it:

I. Activity 1: Create a Story Map


1. Recall your favorite short story, or choose any story from your English
book.
2. Using the shapes, create a story map.
3. Refer to the sample story map below.
4. Write your answer on the paper.

II. Activity 2: Match Shapes


Match each shape in column A with its correct type in column B. Copy
and write the letter of the correct answer on the lines.

1. Open MS Word, then draw on your computers one (1) animal you
want to draw.

respective ICF 8 teacher on messenger.
