Homonuclear Diatomic Molecules of the 2nd Period Elements

Class Practice 1
Petrucci Example 11-6

Represent bonding in O2+ with a molecular orbital diagram,

and determine the bond order in this ion. Is it diamagnetic or
paramagnetic?

Solution:

• O2+: 11 valence electrons

s2s s*2s s2pz p2px,p2py p*2px,p*2py s*2pz

• Bond order = (8 – 3) / 2 = 2.5

• There is an unpaired electron à O2+ is paramagnetic.

Class Practice 2

Represent bonding in B22- with a molecular orbital diagram,

and determine the bond order in this ion.

Solution:

s*2pz

p*2px,p*2py
• Bond order = (6 – 2) / 2 = 2
s2pz

p2px,p2py • Diamagnetic (no unpaired e)

Heteronuclear Diatomic Molecules
Class Practice 3

Represent bonding in BO with a molecular orbital diagram, and

determine its bond order. Is it diamagnetic or paramagnetic?

Solution:

3s24s21p45s1

Or ( , )4

Bond order of BO = (7 – 2) / 2
= 2.5
BO is paramagnetic because it
has an unpaired electron.

Class Practice 7

Magnesium is an excellent electrical conductor even though it has a full

3s subshell with the electron configuration: [Ne]3s2. Use band theory to
explain why magnesium conducts electricity.

Solution:
Although the band that results from the combination of 3s orbitals in
magnesium metal is full, there is another empty band that overlaps
this 3s band. This empty band results from the combination of 3p
orbitals. Although it does not overlap the 3s band in the Mg2 molecule
or in atom clusters, once the metal crystal has grown to visible size,
the overlap is complete.
