Eid-Ul-Fitr

Eid Ul Fitr or most commonly known as Eid is an Arabic term which means “Festival of Breaking of
the Fast”. It is the first important religious festival in islamic calender and takes place in the month of
Shawwal. After fasting for a whole month known as Ramadan, the day when this stringent fasting
ritual is broken is known as Eid. The date for the start of any lunar Hijri Month varies based on the
observation of new moon by local religious authorities, so the exact day of celebration varies by
locality.

Why do we Celebrate Eid?

The three basic reasons for celebrating Eid are narrated below:

1. Showing gratitude towards Allah for being a constant guide in the fasting month of
Ramadan.
2. Going to the mosque and praying atleast five times a day and asking Allah for forgiveness.
3. To carry out the act of charity towards the poor and needy and its called “Zakat-Al-Fitr”
4. Its celebrated to pay tribute to Allah for bestowing with the strength to fast and courage
during the month of Ramadan.

Eid Ul Fitr Has a particular Salat (Islamic Prayers) that consists of two rakats, generally performed in
an open field or a large hall. It may only be performed in congregation (Jama’at) and features six
additional Takbirs. After the salat, Muslims celebrate the Eid-Ul-Fitr in various ways with food (Eid
Cuisine) being a central theme, which also gives it a name of “Sweet Eid’ or “Sugar Feast”
