It is nearly impossible to tell exactly when
Chinese theater came into existence, since
almost all kinds of Chinese performing arts,
whether it was circus, musical or dance
performances. These arts, were all
accompanied by theatricalities however, the
frist full- fledged dramatic presentation in
China -- which was Nanxi, that dated back to
the XII - XiV centuries.

Gradually, the Chinese art of theater, began to
develop, in seperate ares for performances
were beginning to be established, troupes and
performances on permanent basis began to be
created. The XIV - XVII centuries marked the
beginning of heyday of Chinese theaters.

Traditional Chinese musical instruments such as the lute,
gong, and erhu accompany Chinese operas. Actors perform
unique tunes and dialogues that are skillfully composed and
of high literary worth throughout the opera.

Chinese opera was one of the oldest dramatic


arts in the world.
Early History
Early religious ceremonies, most likely shamanistic rites, appear
to be the beginnings of the theatrical arts in China, as they are
elsewhere throughout the globe. China has always been a
historically conscious culture with a long history, and the
Chinese writing system was developed early on. As a result, it's
no surprise that early written evidence of the theatrical tradition
exists in significant quantities.

Peking Opera
What is the Peking Opera, and what is it all about?
The Peking opera is a performance art that incorporates
singing, reciting, acting, and the martial arts. Although
widely practised throughout the lands of China, its
performance is centered on Beijing, Tianjin and Shanghai.
Peking Opera is sung and recited using primarily Beijing
Dialect, and its librettos are composed according to a strict
set of rules that prize form and rhyme.
They tell stories of the past, history, politics, society and
daily life, and aspire to inform as they entertain.
The Music of Peking oper aplays a key role in setting the
pace of the show, creating a particular atmosphere,
shaping the characters and guiding the progress of the
stories.
'Civilian Plays' emphasize string and wind instruments such
as the tin, and high-pitched jinghu and the flute, dizi.
