Laboratory Activity 4:

Elastic Materials

The aim of this experiment is to investigate the relationship between kinetic energy released by a rubber band and the potential
energy, and the elasticity of the materials.

Materials:
For this home-based experiment we have used this following materials:

 Rubber Band
 Paper cup ( Sliced in half lengthwise)
 Ruler

Procedure:

1. Stretch the rubber band into three different lengths; Short stretch, Medium Stretch, and Long stretch. These three
different lengths will be the “condition” for the experiment.

2. In every condition, conduct 3 trials.

3. In the said trials the rubber band must be stretched on the same length, and the cup must start in the same place.

4. Aim the rubber band at the same spot on the cup, this will enable the cup to move in the same direction.

5. In each trial record how far does the cup moves. Then calculate for the mean distance for each condition.

6. Make a graph to further show the results; the experiment provided.

Data:

Condition Measure Trial 1 Trial 2 Trial 3 Mean

Short Stretch 3 inch 6 inch 3 inch 7 inch 5.33
Medium Stretch 4 inch 4 inch 8.1 inch 6.4 inch 6.17
Long Stretch 5 inch 11.1 inch 12.5 inch 10.1 inch 11.23

Results:
The experiment showed us the relationship between the potential and kinetic energy; the primary relationship between the
two is their ability to transform into each other. Potential energy transform into kinetic energy, and kinetic energy converts into
potential energy. In other words they are in a cycle. Let us use the experiment as an example.

When the rubber band is stretched it has potential energy. But when we let go at the other end, the potential energy will
turn into kinetic energy; while the rubber band is flying it’s in motion. However, as soon as the rubber band hits the paper cup, the
kinetic energy will once more transform into potential energy.

Analysis:
From the experiment that we conducted we have gained this numbers:

Condition Measure Trial 1 Trial 2 Trial 3 Mean

Short Stretch 3 inch 6 inch 3 inch 7 inch 5.33
Medium Stretch 4 inch 4 inch 8.1 inch 6.4 inch 6.17
Long Stretch 5 inch 11.1 inch 12.5 inch 10.1 inch 11.23
It shows that the more we stretched the rubber band the more the paper cup moves. It is evident in the numerical values of
our means. We can get the value of mean by adding the sum of the values then dividing it by the sum of the number of values in
the data set.

Solving:
Short stretch – Trial 1 = 6 inch
Trial 2 = 3 inch
Trial 3 = 7 inch

mean =

mean = 5.33

Medium stretch – Trial 1 = 4 inch

Trial 2 = 8.1 inch
Trial 3 = 6.17 inch

mean = 6.17

Long stretch – Trial 1 = 11.1 inch

Trial 2 = 12.5 inch
Trial 3 = 10.1 inch

mean = 11.23

Conclusion:
In conclusion, this home-based experiment: The Elastic Materials; showed us the relationship between kinetic energy
and potential energy. The kinetic and potential energy is bridged by their ability to transform into each other. Moreover, this
experiment showed us the relationship between the condition of the rubber band and the distance the cup will move.

Directions: Conduct a research/ experiment on the elastic property of the system shown in the figure10.18. You can design and
modify this experiment base on the availability of materials. Include documentation of the experiment Figure 10.18

by creating a video and including pictures in the lab report. You can do this with a partner. Use the rubric below for the criteria
needed to evaluate the activity (20 points).

1. Procedure: Pull a thread through the button holes as shown in the picture. The button can be put into a rotating
motion by pulling the thread. One can feel some elasticity of the thread.
2. Theory. Answer the following:
a. What is elasticity?
the ability of a material body to restore its original dimensions and shape after being deformed by
outside forces is known as elasticity. Elastic behavior (or responsiveness) in a body is the term
used to describe this ability.
b. Explain the elastic properties of such a system?
The elasticity is based on what type of material and its property. In short the more the tension it
can take, the more elastic a property is.
c. Make a conclusion.
Different object have different elasticity and it’s also depend on the property that they have.

Overview of the Components of the Lab Report (for PT1 format)

The following is the content of the laboratory report with the explanation of format terms:

3. Title: The Elastic Property of a Rubber Rand

4. Date: July 7, 2022
5. Lab Partners: Francis Andrei P. Toledo
6. Purpose/ Aim: To be able to fully understand what elasticity means and its characteristic.
7. Hypothesis: Educated guess including the student’s expected results.
8. Materials: Rubber Band and bottle cap
9. Method/ Procedure: First is that you need to find a cap of any bottle and make a two hole on it. After making a hole
on a bottle cap, get a rubber band and insert it on the hole that you make. Stretch the rubber band as long as it can
and rotate the bottle cap, then release after rotating it.
10. Observations: In rotating the bottle cap, the rubber is being strench and after we release the bottle cap, it return ot
its original shape and form.
11. Data:
Materials Measurement
Rubber Band 3 inch ( 6 inch when stretch)
Bottle Cap 1 inch
12. Results: It show us what is elacticity and what are the properties of it by conducting this research.
13. Conclusion:
14. This experimnent “To be able to fully understand what elacticity means and its characteristic” help us to determine
the elasticity of a rubber band. We conclude, that the ability of a material body to restore its
original dimensions and shape after being deformed by outside forces is known as elasticity. Elastic
behavior (or responsiveness) in a body is the term used to describe this ability.
