7. (a) Set up the differential equation for forced harmonic oscillator and solve 5 4

(b) Compare the densities of lattice points in (111) and (110) planes in a 5 3
simple cubic lattice.

(c) Obtain an expression for Compton shift. Also obtain an expression for 5 2
energy of a recoil electron.

8. (a) Obtain an expression for intensity of single slit Fraunhofer diffraction 5 3


pattern.

(b) Sodium light of wavelengths 589 nm and 589.6 nm are made incident 5 4
normally on a grating having 500 lines/mm. Calculate the angular
dispersion of these lines in the spectrum of first order.

(c) NaCl crystal has FCC structure and is density 2.18gm/cubic cm. 5 2
Calculate the distance between the two adjacent atoms.

9. (a) Using the expression of intensity distribution for Young’s double-slit 6 3


expt. find out the positions of maximum and minimum and plot
corresponding intensity distribution curve explaining the symbols
properly.

(b) In Newton’s ring experiment, diameter of 𝑛𝑡ℎ dark ring changes from 3 3 3
cm in air to 2.6 cm when a liquid of refractive index 1.33 is introduced
between the lens and the plate. Calculate 𝑛 .

(c) Consider a diffraction grating of width 5 cm with slit width 0.0002 cm 6 3


and separation of 0.0004 cm. (i) What is the grating element? (ii) What
is the maximum observable order if wavelength is 5 x 10−5 cm. (iii) Is
there any missing order? If yes, identify.

10. (a) Two plano-convex lenses each of radius of curvature 100cm are placed 5 3
with their curved surfaces in contact with each other. Newton’s rings are
formed by using a light of wavelength 6 X 10-5cm. Find the distance
between 10th and 20th rings.
