CHAPTER 1. GENERAL INTRODUCTION

1.1. Manufacturing
 Definition - The process of converting raw materials into products.
 Stages:
1. Design
2. Selection of materials
3. Sequence of processes
 Other names:
1. Production
2. Manufacturing engineering
3. Production engineering
 Resources & activities in manufacturing:

1.2. Design process and concurrent engineering

1) Manufactured products
 Meet the customer’s quality standards & expected service
requirements
 Can be produced with zero-based rejection and waste
 Are economical to produce in an increasing global &
competitive marketplace

2) Product design process and concurrent engineering

 Traditional (Fig. 1.1a), design and manufacturing activities have
sequentially, but in practice is wasteful of resources.
 Great need developed for bring products to the market as quickly
as possible.

1.3. Design for manufacture, assembly,

disassembly, and service
 Designers must have a fundamental understanding of the
characteristics, capabilities, and limitation of materials, manufacturing
processes and related operations, machinery, and equipment.

 Assembly is an important phase, it requires consideration of the ease,

speed, and cost of putting parts together.

 Products must be designed so that disassembly is possible.

 The goal of design for service is that individual parts or

subassemblies in a product be easy to reach and service.

1.4. Selecting materials

1) Engineering Materials:

Figure 1.3 An outline of engineering materials

Chapter 1 - 9
Introduction to Manufacturing Engineering – Ass.Prof. N.T. Duong – HUST

2) Considerations in selecting materials

 Properties of materials:
 Mechanical properties: Strength, toughness, ductility, hardness, elasticity,
fatigue, and creep.
 Physical properties: Density, specific heat, thermal expansion and
conductivity, melting point, and electrical and magnetic properties.
 Chemical properties: Oxidation, corrosion, general degradation of properties,
toxicity, and flammability.
 Manufacturing properties: Whether it is easy to manufacture.

 Cost and availability:

 If raw, processed materials, manufactured components are not available in
the desired shapes, dimensions, and quantities, substitutes  Additional processing
will be required  Contribute significantly to product cost.
 Reliability of supply, as well as demand for the material, affects cost.
 Different costs are involved in processing materials by different methods.

 Appearance, service life & recycling:

 Color, feel, and surface texture are considered.

 Wear, fatigue, creep, and dimensional stability are important.

Friction and wear, corrosion can shorten a product’s life or cause it
to fail prematurely.

 The need for conserving resources and for maintaining a

clean and health environment.

Chapter 1 - 11

1.5. Selecting manufacturing processes

There is usually more than one method of manufacturing a part
from a given material:
 Casting: Expendable mold and permanent mold;
 Forming and shaping: Rolling, forging, extrusion, drawing,
sheet forming, powder metallurgy, and molding.
 Machining: Turning, boring, drilling, milling, planing, shaping,
broaching, grinding, ultrasonic machining, chemical, electrical, and
electromechanical machining, high energy beam machining.
 Joining: Welding, brazing, soldering, diffusion bonding,
adhesive bonding, and mechanical joining.
 Finishing: Honing, lapping, polishing, burnishing, deburring,
surface treating, coating, and plating.
 Nanofabrication: Etching techniques, electron beams, and laser
beams.

 Selection of a manufacturing processes depends on:

 Dimensional accuracy & surface finish
 Operational & manufacturing costs
 Consequences of improper selection of materials and processes
 Net-shape manufacturing

1.6. Environmentally conscious design &

manufacturing
 Reducing waste at their source during design
 Research in environmentally safe products
 Reducing use of hazardous materials
 Proper handling of disposal of all waste
 Improvement in recycling, waste treatment, reuse of materials

1.7. Computer integrated manufacturing (CIM)

 Begining with CAD/ CAM (Computer Aided Desing / Manufacturing), the use
of computers has been extended to CIM (Computer Integrated Manufacturing).
 Major applications of computers in manufacturing:
• Computer Numerical Control (CNC)
• Adaptive Control (AC)
• Industrial robots
• Automated handling of materials
• Automated and robotic assembly systems
• Coputer aided process planning (CAPP)
• Group technology (GT)
