Definition Categories
A paint is essentially a coating

or covering material applied
on metallic or non metallic
surfaces for decorative and
protective purpose.
• Binder
• Pigment

• Solvents
Classification Of Paints
– Paints can be classified based on:
• Physical State: Liquid Paint or Stiff Paint
• Thinner Used: Water or Solvent
• Use Case: Decorative or Protective
• Order of Application: Undercoat, Midcoat or Topcoat
• Gloss Level: Glossy, Semi-Glossy, Egg-Shell or Matte
• Mode of Film Formation: Thermosetting or Thermoplastic
• Thermoplastic (Reversible):
After application, solvent evaporates leaving the resin to its original form spread over the surface. The change is
physical and can be reversed by using thinner. E.g. Chlorinated Rubber.
• Thermosetting (Irreversible):
Chemical changes occur in the coating and dry film is different from its liquid state. Change is chemical and cannot
be reversed. E.g. Epoxy, alkyds etc.
Typical Composition of Paints
– Basic constituent of paints are;

• Binders: : Makes the coat of paint retain its structure, and binds it to the surface to which it is applied .
• Solvents: : Dissolves the paint to make it usable at normal room temperatures.
• Pigments: : Gives the paint a colour, but also plays a role in its consistency, ease of
application, drying ability, durability and hardness . Binder
• Additives: : Different types of chemicals to achieve specific properties. 60% - 65%

– Relative proposition of these ingredients can be varied to produce films with any desired physical
and application characteristics.
Binders
Binders are the heart of the paint system. Binders bind the particles into a coherence film which adheres to
the substrate. Mechanical and resistive properties of the film are controlled very largely by binder. Durability
of the paint depends on quality and quantity of binder used.
– Functions of a binder: – Alkyd Resin

• Convert the liquid paint to a solid dry film. – Amino Resin
• Provide gloss
– Epoxy Resin
• Making the coating adhere to the substrate
– Polyamide Resin
• Give elasticity to the film
– Polyurethane Resin
• Provide resistance to water, chemical and
abrasion – Chlorinated Rubber
• Disperse the pigments and extenders – Vinyl Resin
• Hold the pigment in suspension.
– Cellulose Resin
– Acrylic Resin
Solvents
– The primary function is to dissolve film formers, thereby consistent

suitable for application. Choice of solvent influences viscosity, drying,
flow and levelling. Solvent dissolves the paint to make it usable at
normal room temperatures.
– Solvents are lost to atmosphere, so it is an economic loss.
– Solvents, in isolation or combination are used in making thinner for

the paints.
Pigments
– A finely divided powder which can disperse in media of various types

to give color to paints.
– Important properties of pigments are as follows:

• Color
• Tinting Strength
• Opacity
• Fastness to light
• Resistance to heat
• Oil absorption of pigment
• Particle size: Hiding Power, Gloss or smoothness, Rate of settling of pigment
Additives
– Used in a small amounts to give a coating one or more desirable

properties.
– Difference between additive and other raw material is that amount

of additive is very small.
– Properties that can be controlled thru additives are:
