The document discusses sieve analysis tests conducted on different aggregate samples to determine their fineness modulus and key properties. Factors like water absorption and specific gravity are also discussed.

Tests discussed include sieve analysis to determine fineness modulus, measurement of water absorption, specific gravity, bulk density and voids. Sieve analysis gives the particle size distribution while other tests measure water absorption, densities and voids in aggregates.

The fineness modulus is affected by the coarseness of the aggregate. Coarser aggregates have a higher fineness modulus, which generally ranges from 2.3 to 3.1 for fine aggregates used in concrete.

Fineness modulus (FM) is a numerical index obtained from the sieve analysis test
result. The FM is the sum of the total percentages coarser than each of a specified
series of sieves, divided by 100. the sum of total cumulative percentage retained
divided by 100 gives the fineness modulus.
FM= 5.5

5.35

Although the FM is most commonly computed for fine aggregates, the FM of coarse
aggregate is needed for some proportioning methods. It is calculated in the same
manner, while taking care to exclude sieves that are not specified in the definition (for
example, 25.0 and 12.5 mm [l and 1/2 in.] sieves) and to include all of the specified
finer sieves.
Important Points To Remember: Coarser the aggregate, higher is the fineness
modulus. FM generally ranges between 2.3 to 3.1 for fine aggregates used in concrete
as per ASTM C 33.

Water absorption: The ratio of the water weight absorbed by aggregates to the weight of dry sample of aggregate
expressed in percentage, is termed as the water absorption. It excludes the water adhered to the surface of the pa
[12]. Water absorption of selected aggregates was determined using the ASTM C-127 standards. The aggregate sp
were surface dried by placing them in an oven. Afterwards, the aggregates were immersed in water for 24 hours a
weighed in saturated surface dry condition (SSD). Aggregates were then placed in an oven at 110 ºC for 24 hours a
weighed again. Water absorption can be measured as (Eq. 1):
