Resultant shear force on bolts = 9.03 kN

Using 2-M 12 Bolts (HDG 8.8 grade bolt)

Shear force on each bolt = 4.51 kN

Capacity = (Nos of interface x slip factor x proof loadx )/ FOS)

Bearing check by using IS800:2007 for column thickness


Member thickness 2 mm
Use 12 mm dia bolt
Actual stress of bolt in bearing on any plate, fpb = Vsb/Apb
The permissible bearing stress of the bolt/plate, fapb= 0.60Vnpb/Apb
Hence Vsb < 0.6Vnpb for safety against bearing
Vnpb is nominal bearing capacity of a bolt calculated as follows

2) Angle to rafter connection :-


Maximum force obtained from Staad at purlin to rafter connection:
Fy 2.431 kN
Fz 0.164 kN
Shear force on bolts = 1.2155 kN
Tensile force on bolts = 1.218 kN

Using 2-M 12 bolts (HDG 8.8 grade bolt),

Proof load for M 12 bolt = 50.70 kN (HDG 8.8 grade bolt)

Bolt tension should be less than 0.6 x Proof load = 30.42 kN > 1.218

Hence, provide 1-M 12 for Tension Bolt (HDG 8.8 grade bolt)

3) Purlin To Angle connection :-


Resultant shear force on bolts = 1.22 kN

Using 2-M 12 Bolts (HDG 8.8 grade bolt)

Shear force on each bolt = 1.22 kN

5) Plate to column connection for back bracing :-

FX = 15.629 KN from staad

resolve forces in horizontal & vertical directions :-

eccentricity e1 = 0.115 m
eccentricity e2 = 0.0762 m

moment 1 = force X e 1.27 KN.m


moment 1 = force X e 0.84 KN.m

resultant moment = 1.52 KN.m

Shear force due to moment :-

Total shear force = 30.49 + 7.55

Shear force on each bolt = 6.34 kN

Hence, provide 6-M 12 (HDG 8.8 grade bolt) at column to plate for back bracing

Check for plate thickness :-

Allowable stress for bending(sigma) 0.66*fy


Z= Requried section modulus= b^2 t/6
Fy 250 Mpa
Sigma 165 Mpa
b 146 mm
M/Z=Sigma

Required Thickness (t) 2.60 mm

Hence Provided thickness of plate is 5 mm of Fy 250Mpa grade

6) Front Bracing to column/ Rafter Connection :-

Maximum values obtained from Staad at end of bracing:


Fx = 9.94 kN
Shear force on each bolt = 4.970 kN

Using 2 - M 12 ( HDG - 8.8 grade bolts )

7) Plate to column connection for front bracing :-

FX = 9.95 KN

resolve forces in horizontal & vertical directions :-

eccentricity e1 = 0.12 m
eccentricity e2 = 0.04 m

moment 1 = force X e 1.14 KN.m


moment 1 = force X e 0.38 KN.m

resultant moment = 1.20 KN.m

Shear force due to moment :-

Shear force on each bolt = 7.26 kN

Hence, provide 4-M 16 (HDG 8.8 grade bolt) at column to plate for front bracing

Check for plate thickness :-

Allowable stress for bending(sigma) 0.66*fy


Z= Requried section modulus= b^2 t/6
Fy 250 Mpa
Sigma 165 Mpa
b 115 mm
M/Z=Sigma

Required Thickness (t) 3.31 mm

Hence Provided thickness of plate is 5 mm of Fy 250Mpa grade

5) Module To Purlin Bolt :-

FX 0.74 kN (Pz X cf X module area )

Shear Capacity of Bolt :-

Nos Dia yeild strength of bolt Proof Load Capacity (kN)

Tensile force on bolts = 0.740 kN

Using 1-M 8 bolts (SS304 Bolt),

Proof load for M 8 bolt = 7.72 kN

Bolt tension should be less than 0.6 x Proof load = 4.63 kN > 0.740

Hence use 4- M 8-SS304 grade bolt per module to purlin connection
