ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING AND THE USE OF ENGLISH
INTRODUCTION
Proficiency in the English language is a growing need worldwide due to the opportunities it
offers for international communication. Especially for a university student who is part of the
education of the new generations since it adapts to the needs of people who are going to use
English as a means of communication for professional, cultural and social reasons. For this
reason, the training of teachers and students in English is very important in universities. We
all need to achieve the development of communication skills, which today include interactive
and intercultural skills.
For many years, the English language began an expansion process embedded in the
phenomenon known worldwide as globalization. In fact, the number of people learning this
language is constantly increasing, there are also many people who rely on it as they need to
study English abroad to get a job or succeed in any field. Language According to Argentine
professors and researchers, they confirm that the use of a foreign language, with an emphasis
on English, has gone from a privilege to a necessity in various areas of production.
The process of globalization is the main reason why English is so important worldwide that it
is now considered the common language of business. It can be said that today it is the
language of the world. During this period, the colloquial language, the most international
language, had an impact on all non-Anglo-Saxon countries, including Spain, and most more
or less directly on various trades and professions. Owning it can no longer be a luxury, but a
necessity.
Although Spanish is the mother tongue of more people than English, the latter language is
more likely to be taught as a second language than the former. Additionally, recent estimates
indicate that there are approximately 402 million native speakers of the language and that it is
currently used by over 1 billion non-native speakers who speak the real language. Therefore,
learning is a priority from the early education levels to the higher education level, which
should improve their knowledge and attitudes in various aspects of listening, information and
information.

DEVELOPING
A) THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE
I. ORIGIN (Etymology, city of origin, etc.)
The English language has come a long way: what began as a dialect of
invading peoples, was enriched by the contribution of various cultures to
become the most important language worldwide. Here is a review of this
interesting story.
The history of the English language has its origin from the arrival of three
Germanic tribes to the British Isles, that is, around the year 500 BC. C. These
three tribes were known as Angles, Saxons and Jutes, who crossed the North
Sea from what is now known as Denmark and northern Germany.
The land of the Anglos, was known as Engle or Angels and their language was
called Englisc or what finally gave rise to the name of the language as English.
The oldest sample of the English language is an Anglo-Saxon inscription
dating from 450-480 BC. C. As the Germanic tribes expanded throughout the
country, 4 dialects of the English language developed:
-Northumbrian: spoken mainly in the Northumbrian region, north of the
Humber River. This dialect dominated Great Britain during the years 700-800
a. c.
-Mercian: typical of Mercia, located in the central part of present-day England.
-West Saxon: from Wessex, south western part.
-Kentish: native to Kent, in the extreme southeast of England
Throughout history, English has been undergoing transformations and the way
of speaking has been changing, a clear example of this is Old English and after
some time some changes happened and Middle English began to be spoken,
finally it began to be spoken in modern English.
Old English often gets a bad rap among linguists; It is seen as the least
beautiful language and often the least poetic of the English languages.
However, it is responsible for a large part of it including the names England
and English, which are derived from the term Angles.
3
In Middle English we can see the influence of Old Norse and Norman French.
Perhaps one of the significant Old Norse influences on English was on the
syntax and grammatical order of words. Just as the Vikings colonized Britain,
so too the patterns of English grammar have a lot to thank North Germanic
languages like Danish and Icelandic.
Modern English is considered to have started from the 16th century and
continues to this day. It takes its pronouns and prepositions and its Germanic
and Nordic grammatical roots, adding an extensive Latin and French
influenced vocabulary. Combine this with an overwhelming harmonization of
vowel sounds, which comes close to something like the English sounds we
know today.
Two of the most famous texts to emerge in this way were the King James or
James (soon to celebrate its 400th anniversary) and the German Martin Lutero,
which had appeared less than 100 years earlier.
Part of the process of establishing the power and influence of these local
languages was the effort to produce standardized forms, so that teachers,
merchants, lawyers, religious ministers, and politicians could all write to each
other in ways that were instantly understandable.
4
This seemed to require, then and now, consistent ways of presenting language
on a page—spelling and punctuation—and consistent ways of presenting the
grammar of words and phrases.
As a result, the standardized script of English became a powerful tool in the
hands of government, church and school in asking the people of the British
Isles to see themselves as one.
If the 20th century can be described as a wild flowering of the claims of
nationalism - including pride in national languages and literature - it also saw
the rise of utopian dreams of international cooperation as initially envisioned
by the League of Nations and later the United Nations.
However, in these places the situation was not that one nation was speaking to
the other, but rather that one interpreter was speaking to another. In response,
the inventors of international languages tried to bring world peace through
their witticisms, the most famous of which was Esperanto. It didn't have much
of an impact for the politicians of the world to need it or even want to learn it.
Before World War II, German was considered the language of science and
knowledge, so all scientific articles, papers, and research carried out were
published in this language.
However, with the outbreak of the war, this language increasingly lost its
prestige until English began to dominate the knowledge scene.
And many years before even thinking about having a world war (or two), the
major European powers set out to expand their domains around the world after
the discovery of America, and England was no exception.
5
This gave rise to the British Empire, which expanded throughout the
Americas, Asia, Europe and Oceania and lasted until the start of World War II.
The expansion of England throughout the world also meant the expansion of
English and today 57 countries around the world use it as their official
language.
According to the English Proficiency Index, there is a correlation between
English proficiency and an increase in income per person. Statistics show us
that professionals with exceptional English skills earn 30-50% more income.
Additionally, studies show that it is directly associated with increases in
quality and life expectancy. These statistics apply not only to middle and top
managers, but also to professionals who want to increase their opportunities
for higher salaries mainly by getting involved in outsourcing companies.
Finally, multinational companies are establishing English as their official
language. According to 90% of CEOs around the world, their income and
profits have increased by adopting this language.
6
In addition, according to The Economist of America, a 53% chance of getting
a job is achieved by mastering English. Knowing this language increases
your chances of getting a good job in a multinational company within your
home country or of finding work abroad. In addition, in some industries, such
as science, aviation, computers, diplomacy and tourism, it is essential to
develop the jobs specific to each sector.
On the other hand, an estimated 565 million people use the Internet every
day, and approximately 52% of the world's most visited websites are
displayed in English. In that sense, one of the benefits of learning English is
that it gives you access to more than half of the content on the Internet. Just
knowing how to read English will give you access to billions of pages of
information that would otherwise not be available.
Keep in mind that having access to much more information can make a real
difference in your professional life, even if you don't work with
English-speaking colleagues or clients. Information on a website written in
English can help you better understand a project or provide useful
information for a report.
It is also known that because English is the de facto language of the United
States and the official language of the United Kingdom, Canada, India and
South Africa, it is the dominant business language and it has become almost
a necessity for people to speak English if they want to enter a global
workforce.
However, this requirement is not just for business owners, many international
companies expect all of their employees to be fluent in English, so that
cross-border business communication can happen smoothly.
Lastly, another benefit of learning English is that mastering this language in
business can help you understand expectations and complete tasks
successfully, resulting in a sense of purpose and a positive opinion of your
workplace.
7
At present, English has become almost a basic language that every person
must know in order to function in different aspects, one of these being the
field of education and training of students of different educational levels,
who to date today they have to study the language by obligation; However,
the reasons why the educational systems incorporated the teaching of English
into their curriculum are mainly in order to promote interest in the language
in the student; In this way, other reasons are the following:
● A large part of the scientific articles and other documents necessary
for the development of students, mainly university students, are in the
English language.
● Knowing and mastering the language allows access to a better
education, having the opportunity to pursue a university degree abroad or
perhaps some specialization.
● When a person has knowledge of English, he may be able to
communicate with others so that he can consult other specialists about a
given topic.
This language is important at each educational level, however, it acquires
greater emphasis in the university stage, since universities want to graduate
bilingual professionals, in this sense España (2010) indicates:
8
enjoy watching movies and series in their original language, since dubbing a
movie often takes additional time.
For example, international news is often found in this language, so not
knowing English limits the amount of information that a person can access,
there we also have a reason for the importance of knowing the language.
9
better and you will be able to communicate more fluently, a fact that will
increase your confidence in yourself and that you will enjoy every time. more
using English. Learning a language is one of the most powerful
self-improvement tools you can turn to, one that will allow you to overcome
your fears and test your limits.
10
designing biological treatment facilities to remove organic compounds from
wastewater, or when using different chemical compounds to oxidize and
precipitate metals. in water supply installations. In short, in this discipline all
available technological tools are used to design pollution treatment and
control devices. This makes it extremely important today and is perhaps the
last link needed to complete an important circle: preserving the environment
from the harmful effects caused by human activity, and therefore man from
the harmful effects of a polluted environment.
11
It is simply, to protect and ensure that both our species and the rest of the
species that inhabit the planet have a better quality of life and that future
generations can enjoy a clean world as we have done.
In Japan, English is becoming the language of basic sciences which has led to
the gradual disappearance of Japanese publications. The same author assures
that RIKEN, one of the groups Japan's best-known researchers, has stated
that its scientists published almost 2,000 original reports in English in 2005
and only 174 in Japanese. Another study shows that publishing companies in
Japan charge publishers 500 to 800 per manuscript; a 10-week language
course could cost 2000 dollars. These costs are an additional burden and slow
down the scientific activities in laboratories. Likewise, this same author
considers the level of English proficiency in spoken terms of a researcher to
facilitate or hinder their participation in international conferences. Despite
their good research results, sometimes scientists are so nervous in their
presentations due to the difficulty they have in expressing their ideas clearly
in English, while those who have made their courses of this language feel
more confident even when the merit of their research is not high level.
12
Another case where English proficiency plays an important role is in the
preparation of research proposals. Promising research could be rejected due
to the lack of coherence and cohesion of its content, althoughIt is true that an
editor could collaborate, many times he might not know the technical ideas
of the project. Considering the above, many European countries and Asians
are gradually adopting English as the language of science
● Meet one of the priority requirements to apply for any position and
have the language as a competitive advantage.
● Access to better job opportunities, inside and outside your country of
origin.
● Gain confidence to make a presentation or lead a negotiation.
● Better performance when conducting a job interview.
This will also directly benefit the company, as they will be able to find
business partners and better suppliers in different parts of the world or enter
almost any market with their products or services.
13
- In commercialization of environmental equipment
First Learning English can help you expand your business internationally.
Beyond your city and your country there are millions of customers willing to
consume your products and services. Let's see:
2. Export of products: If you want to export products, you need very fluid
communication in procedures and logistics. This communication is done in
English. Do not risk the success of an export because of a bad command of
English.
3. Associate with foreign companies: At some point your business will need
suppliers, distributors or make strategic alliances with other foreign
companies. Again, your ability in English will be crucial to carry out a good
negotiation.
- In environmental projects
First of all we must know what an environmental impact study is, since
according to Gencat, this is "the environmental impact study is the set of
studies and technical analyzes that allow evaluating the effects that the
execution of a certain project can cause on the environment".
14
For the development of an environmental impact study, it is necessary that
the professional who will carry it out be duly trained, which is why this type
of training is frequently provided, emphasizing the use of new technologies
and innovative techniques that facilitate and optimize the results. . by
international institutions and specialists who make greater use of the English
language. Also, as mentioned above, English is important in environmental
projects because it allows the professional to access scientific articles that are
mostly in English; On the other hand, to carry out these environmental
impact projects, analysis in specialized laboratories is required, sometimes
they are international laboratories that provide their results report in this
language.
- In mining
Mining is another of the fields of action of environmental engineering, being
one of the most outstanding and that is, this is one of the main economic
activities that takes place in our country, for which the Ministry of Energy
and Mines indicates to the In this regard, "At a global and Latin American
level, Peru is among the main producers of various metals (gold, silver,
copper, lead, zinc, iron, tin, molybdenum, tellurium, among others)."
In this sense, consequently, students have to be prepared for situations within
this field that require their knowledge of the English language, since this is
15
the most used by foreign companies, mentions Tiempo Minero in one of its
articles.
(...) According to an analysis by the 'British Business Unit', mining and the
hydrocarbons sector are the sectors that most demand bilingual professionals.
The research results also indicate that mining professionals who are fluent in
English can earn up to 30% more than those who only know Spanish (…).
CONCLUSIONS
