CAUTION: REPAIR MUST NOT HINDER THE OPERATION OF MOVING COMPONENTS. IT IS IMPORTANT
TO MAKE SURE THAT ALL CLEARANCE DIMENSIONS FOR COMPONENTS ARE KEPT IN THE
SPECIFIED LIMITS.

CAUTION: THE INFORMATION IN THIS TOPIC MUST BE USED ONLY WHEN REFERRED TO FROM
CHAPTER 52 THRU 57 OR IN A SPECIFIC REPAIR INSTRUCTION.
1. Task Supporting Data

A. General
(1) Given in this task is the necessary information to do a temporary or permanent skin repair to a
composite structure.
(2) The repairs given in this task are defined to restore skin damages. They do not cover damages
to honeycomb cells, ribs or stiffener.
(3) Before starting to repair the damage, follow the steps given in the Inspection/Repair Flow Chart
in TASK 51-77-10-911-001, Figure 001.
(4) For a permanent repair several methods are given. For example:
- a wet lay up or pre-cured doublers,
- a hot bond repair using prepregs in combination with an adhesive film.
(5) The repairs given in this task are for general use and are to be applied only when a specific
chapter calls for them.
(6) To make an approved repair, refer to the relevant chapter in the SRM for details of the
component as follows:

(7) For permanent repairs, the repair material must as a general rule match the original material
used as follows:
- only carbon fiber materials to repair carbon fiber structures,
- only glass fiber materials to repair glass fiber or aramid fiber structures.

2. Repair Procedure

A. Wet Lay-Up Repair for non Perforating Damage (Refer to Figure 001 (sheet 1 thru 4))
(1) Prepare the repair area (Refer to TASK 51-77-11-911-018 Paragraph 2.B.

NOTE: If the repair will be done after Option D (as shown in sheet 4), do the steps of TASK 51-
77-12-911-003 Paragraph 2.B to TASK 51-77-12-911-003 Paragraph 2.G first.

WARNING: BONDING AND ADHESIVE COMPOUND IS DANGEROUS.


(2) Prepare the laminating resin (Refer to TASK 51-77-11-911-031 Paragraph 2.B and TASK 51-77-
11-911-006).
(3) Prepare the repair plies (Item 4 or 5, Repair Materials List and refer to TASK 51-77-11-911-013).
(4) Put repair plies on the repair area (Refer to TASK 51-77-11-911-019).
(5) Install the vacuum bag and, if the repair cure is to be accelerated by the application of heat, the
heating equipment (Refer to TASK 51-77-11-911-022).
(6) Allow the repair to cure under vacuum pressure (Refer to TASK 51-77-11-911-023). If the repair
cure is to be accelerated by the application of heat, let the repair cure at the required
temperature and time (Refer to TASK 51-77-11-911-031 Paragraph 2.B and TASK 51-77-11-911-
023).
(7) Remove the vacuum bag and heating equipment.

(8) Inspect the repair (Refer to TASK 51-77-10-911-004).


(9) Remove any resins remnants from the border area of the repair, use abrasive cloth. Start with
280 grade and finish with 400 grade.
(10) Clean the repair area with non aqueous cleaner (Material No. 08BBF1 or Material No. 08BBU9)
and refer to TASK 51-77-11-911-010.
(11) If required, restore the surface protection (Refer to Chapter 51-75-12).
B. Hot Bond Repair with Prepreg Plies for non Perforating Damage - (Refer to Figure 002 (sheet 1 thru 5))
(1) Prepare the repair area (Refer to TASK 51-77-11-911-018 Paragraph 2.B.

NOTE: If the repair will be done after Option D (as shown in sheet 4), do the steps of TASK 51-
77-12-911-003 Paragraph 2.B and TASK 51-77-12-911-003 Paragraph 2.G first.

WARNING: BONDING AND ADHESIVE COMPOUND IS DANGEROUS.


(2) Prepare the prepreg repair plies (Item 2 or 3, Repair Materials List and refer to TASK 51-77-11-
911-008) and adhesive film (Refer to TASK 51-77-11-911-031 Paragraph 2.F and TASK 51-77-
11-911-007).
(3) Position the prepreg repair plies (and the adhesive film) in the repair area (Refer to TASK 51-77-
11-911-020).
(4) Install the vacuum bag and heating equipment (Refer to TASK 51-77-11-911-022).
(5) Cure at the required temperature and vacuum for the recommended time (Refer to TASK 51-77-
11-911-023, TASK 51-77-11-911-031 Paragraph 2.F and TASK 51-77-11-911-031 Paragraph 2.I.
(6) Remove the vacuum bag and heating equipment.
(7) Inspect the repair (Refer to TASK 51-77-10-911-004).
(8) Remove any resin remnants from the border area of the repair, use abrasive cloth. Start with
280 grade and finish with 400 grade.
(9) Clean the repair area with non aqueous cleaner (Material No. 08BBF1 or Material No. 08BBU9)
and refer to TASK 51-77-11-911-010.
(10) If required, restore the surface protection (Refer to Chapter 51-75-12).
