CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The researcher of this thesis carefully, discovered that virtually the whole world is
yearning for an effective leadership to manage her affairs. No wonder the scripture said
“for the earnest expectation of the creature waited for the manifestation of the sons God.
For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willing, but the reason of him who had
subjected the same in hope” Rom 8 : 19 – 20 KJV

Church can only grow when the leaders are dynamic and focus. When an organization or
church leadership has good vision and strategies, certainly such must grow for the
scripture said “my people are destroyed for lack knowledge and where there is no vision
people perished Hos 4 : 6, Pro 29 : 18

The researcher sometimes wondered whether it is the same spirit of God that led the
early apostles that is still leading the church today. If it is the same spirit, then one may
ask where did this spirit of quarrying and rancor among the leadership came from?

The researcher discovered that church continue to lose grip on her heritage due to the
bad leaders who continue to operate without the leading of the Holy Spirit. In other
wards many leaders we have today are what the researcher called apostasy who occupy
the position of leadership to oppressed the men of God

The researcher discovered that most churches are not glowing because of the quest for
acquisition of wealth and classes had made many church leaders to lost focus on the real
discipleship of their members that often lead to spiritual enhancement, for the effective
manifestation of the power of God in this 21st century.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE RESEARCH PROBLEM

The researcher believed that problem of the lack of church growth in the Christendom
we are witnessing depend on the leadership in those days organization and company
goes to churches to look for Christians to entrusted leadership to them because then
Christian yes where yes and their no was no unlike this days that unfaithfulness became
the order of the day

The researcher believe if Christian leaders should go back to the original way of living,
the Spirit of the living God will takes His place and the church will begins to experience
the unusual growth

The researcher believe if the problem of leadership in the church is properly handled our
society problem can be tackle

1.3 OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

The aims of this research thesis is to build the church and reposition the Christian
leadership back on the track that will enhance the Biblical standard for the church
growth

The objective are as following

 To discover the roles of Christian leadership in church

 The effect of effective leadership in church growth

 The problem confronting leadership in the church growth

 The solution for the problem of effective Christian leadership in church

growth

1.4 THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The researcher believed that, the inadequate church growth in the church today is
basically depend on the autocratic and unhealthy people in the leadership position in the
church while some duty are to oppress, others are castigating thereby, making members
wondering about like a sheep without Shepherd

This research can serve as a correction and a lesion to all the stakeholder of the present
generation to take appropriate measure or instinct in the method of their leadership to
enhance growth in the church more so that there is a day of accountability

For the scripture said “blessed is that servant whom his lord when he comes shall find
him so doing, verily I say unto you that, he shall make him ruler over all his goods, but if
that evil servant shall say in his heart, my lord delay in his coming and shall begin to
oppress his fellow servants and to eat and drinks with drunkenness then the master of
that servant shall come in a day he will list expected and he will be punished” Matt 24:
46 – 51

Hopefully this research will help and guide us in our leadership style to ensure changes
in our attitude just as Jesus asked apostle Peter, Peter love thou me more than this?
Every leadership primary assignment is feeding the flocks.
Leadership is not about position or fames rather it is about service. The worthy of a soul
is greater the wealth of the whole world (Mark 8 : 36 ) if you are required to account for
a soul you carelessly or willingly allowed slip or died in your hand how can you afford
to pay for it? In view of these facts the researcher is hereby encourage all leaders to
make sure, if you cannot win more souls then no soul should be allowed to slip or died in
your hand.

In addition this research could be useful for teaching in theological schools for effective
up bring of effective Christian leaders in the body of Christ.

Furthermore, the researcher believe, this research could be useful for other students to
carry out more details on the subject matter for betterment of the church of God ‘

1.5 RESEARCH QUESTION

1)   what are the roles of Christian leadership in the church growth?

2) what are the effect of effective Christian leadership in the church?

3) what are the problem confronting leadership in the church growth in this
contemporary church?

4) what are the solutions for the problem confronting the church leaders in the
present church?

5)   In which way can the church flush out the abnormalities from among her in order
to promote godly church growth?

1 .6 THE SCOPE OF THE STUDY

Due to the challenges and importance of the topic of this study, the researcher intended
to travel around the churches in Kaduna to make a proper investigation into the effective
Christian leadership and its roles in promoting church growth but this shall limited the
Methodist church Nigeria, Diocese of Kaduna.

1.7 INTRODUCTION TO METHODOLOGY

The population of Methodist members within Diocese of Kaduna is estimated to about a

million. However, for the effective work of this research thesis, the researcher is oblarge
to apply method of random sampling technique within 200 members

1.8 THE LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

The research thesis is carried out simultaneously with other academic activities, office
commitment, ministerial engagement and family upkeeps which the researcher has to
pursue. The researcher has to share the available time and resources he has among all
other commitments, therefore this research work does not have sufficient time and
resources it requires,

Secondly another factor that makes it impossible for the researcher to study the in-dept
of an effective Christian leadership and its roles in promoting church growth is due to
poor financial capability to do the necessary running around.

Furthermore, the insecurity in the of the nation through insurgence and Boko Haram, as
well as kidnappers, unknown gunmen or bandits activities has weakened the opportunity
of travelling and made almost impossible, therefore adequate research study of the
subject was handicapped.

Finally the bureaucratic system and apostasy among the leadership in today’s church
made the research study very difficult hence many refused to disclose necessary
information needed
1.9 DIFINITION OF TERMS

MCN for the purpose of this research, the researcher wish to define MCN as Methodist
Church Nigeria

CHAPTER TWO LITERATURE REVIEW

2.1 INTRODUCTION

The researcher in his own opinion believed that effective Christian leadership is the
propeller which translates the mind of God to the church. When a right leader is
placed in the right place the church or the organization will experience tremendous
growth beyond human imagination. When once a wrong spire is put in a wrong
whole church will suffered set back

Meanwhile in this chapter the researcher will be examine the work of the other
authors that are related to this research work

2.2 WHO IS A CHRISTIAN

1 According to the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary a Christian is a person

who base on or believing the teaching of Jesus Christ.

2 According to the researcher, a Christian is a person who truly belief and accept
Jesus Christ as his or her personal Lord and Saviour Christ.

2.2.1 CHARRACTERISTIC OF CHRISTIAN

Within the Christian perception and experience of God, characteristic features stand out
for:

1) The personality of God

2) God as the creator
3) God as Lord of history
4) God as the Judge

THE PERSONALITY OF GOD

God as person, is the “I am who I am” designated in Exodus 3 : 14. The personal
consciousness of human beings awakens in the encounter with God understood as a
person; “the Lord used to speak with Moses face to face, as a man speak with his friend
Exodus 33 : 11

GOD AS A CREATOR God is also viewed as the creator of heaven and earth the
believer thus maintains on the one hand, acknowledgement of divine omnipotence as the
creative power of God which also operates in the person of God, which operates in the
preservation of the world and on the other hand, trusts in the world “despite all its
contradictions is understood as one world created by God according to definite laws and
principles and according to an inner plan.

The decisive aspect of creation, however, is that God fashioned human according to the
divine images and made the creation subject to them. This special position of humans in
the creation which makes them coworkers of God in the preservation and consummation
of the creation, bring a decisively new characteristic into the understanding of God

This new characteristic is God as the Lords of history which is the main features of the
Old Testament understanding of God: God selected a special people and contracts a
special covenant with them, through the law (Torah) the divine agent binds this “people
of god in a special wave. God sets before them a definite goal of salvation

The establishment of a divine dominion and through the prophets admonishes the people
by proclamations of salvation and calamity whenever they are unfaithful to the
covenant and promise
This God of history also the God of the Judgment: The Israelite belief that the
disclosure of God comes through the history of divinely led people leads, with an inner
logic, to the proclamation of God as the Lord of world history and as the Judge of the
world www,britamnica.com

Furthermore according to Anchored in Christ Bible and Theology emphasizes on

Matthew 7; 21-23 that not everyone who claims Jesus as their Lord is sincerely saved.
This means that many think they know Christ but will come to find out they never truly
knew Him in a saving grace. In fact every Christian most be assured of the following
Characteristics of a true Christian

1 We know that we are Christian because we walk in the light (1John 1 : 4 – 7 )

our style of the is gradually conformed to what God has revealed to us about His
nature and will

2 We know that we are Christian because our lives are marked by sensitivity to sin,
repentance and confession 1John 1: 8 – 10

3 We know that we are Christian because we keep God’s commands (1John 2: 3- 4)

we desire to know God’s will strive to obey it and mourn our disobedience

4 We know that we are Christian because walk as Christ walked (1john 2: 4 – 5) we

desire to imitate Christ and grow in conformity to Him

5 We know that we are Christian because of our increasing disdain for the world and
because of our rejection of all that contradicts God’s nature and will 1John 2 ; 15 –
17
6 We know that we are Christian because we profess Christ to be God and hold Him in
the highest esteem 1John 2 : 22 – 24
7 We know that we are Christian because we are practicing righteousness, we are
doing those things that conform to God’s righteous standard

According to Nancy Demoss Wolgemuth and Tim Grissom, “Roman chapter twelve is
described, as the best road map for Christian characters. That the Bible is crystal clear
about what a true Christian lifestyle should look like.”

“ let love be genuine, Abhor what is evil, hold fast to what is good, love one another
with brotherly affection, outdo one another in showing honour, do not be slothful in
zeal, be fervent in spirit serve the Lord, rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be
constant in prayer, contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show
hospitality, bless those who persecute you, bless and do not curse them, rejoice with
those who rejoice and weep with those who weep, live in harmony with one another.
Do not be haughty but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight.
Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of
all if possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved never
avenged yourself but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, vengeance is
mine. I will repay says the Lord to the contrary, if your enemy is hungry feed him if
he is thirsty give him something to drink for by so doing you will heap burning
coals on his head. Do not be overcome by evil but overcome evil with good”. Rom
12:9 - 27

2.3 WHO IS A LEADER

According to Myles Monroe, A leader is defined as one who guides by influence, or one
who directs, by going before or along with, regardless of little, you cannot be a leader
without followers. In essence, a person who has subordinates but no followers is not a
leader.

A leader is one who influences others to follow after him to a common cause or purpose
and possesses the character which inspires their confidence. At the same time, he is a
confident servant, ultimately a leader is one who becomes himself fully and attempts to
express that self totally.

A leader is the person who lead or commands a group, organization or country. A leader
is the principal players in a music group.

A leader is a person who influences a group of people toward the achievement of a goal.
In other wards he is a person who goes ahead of others leading by example so as to
motivates people to follow him objectively.

To be a leader, the person must have a deep-rooted commitment to the goal that he will
strive to achieve, even if nobody followed him

According to Oxford Advance Learners Dictionary, leader is a person who lead a group
of people especially the head of community, an organization or government

A leader is someone who can see how things can be improved and who rallies people to
move toward making vision and changes

A leader is a person who enter into a relationship with another person to influence their
behaviour, values, and attitude to achieve common goal.

A leader is one person in charge, the person who convinces others people to follow, a
great leader inspires, confidence in other people and moves them to action
In view of the following, the researcher resolved that a leader is a person who goes first
and lead by example, to motivate others to follow him to achieve the organizational goal

2.3.1 WHAT IS LEADERSHIP

Leadership is the organizing and coordinating of resources, energies, relationship in a

productive context for an intended result. Leadership is the managing of the managers
toward a common goal, therefore leadership by its very nature incorporates a clear
purpose and vision which provide the fuel for inspiration, motivation and mobilization

Leadership is impossible without a guiding vision and purpose that generates passion for
accomplishment.

Leadership is simple and general definition of leadership includes the capacity to

influence, inspire, rally, direct, encourage, motivate, induce, move, mobilize and activate
others to pursue a common goal or purpose while maintaining commitment, momentum,
confidence and courage ( becoming a leader by Myles Munroe)

The true measure of leadership is influence, nothing more, nothing less. Margate
Thatcher, The former British prime minister, Observed, Being in power is like being a
lady. If you watch the dynamics that occur between people in just about every aspect of
life, you will see some people leading and others following and you will notice that
position and title often have little to do with who is really in charge.

Why do some people emerge as leader while others cannot influence people no matter
how hard they try? The researcher believed that several factors come into being:-

Character -- who they are :- The true leadership always begins with the inner person,
that is why someone like Billy Graham is able to draw more and more followers to him
as time goes by people can sense the dept of his character,
Relationship – who they know:- You are a leader only if you have followers and that
always requires the development of relationship.

The deeper this relationship, the stronger, is the potential for leadership. It is important
to build relationship with the right people and you can become the real leader in an
organization.

Knowledge – what they know:- Information is vital to a leader, you need a grasp of
the facts, an understanding of dynamic factors and timing and a vision for the future.
Knowledge alone would not make someone a leader but without knowledge no one can
become one for, it is better for any new leader in an organization to always spend a lot of
time doing home work before the need to take the lead.

Intuition – what they feel:- Leadership requires more than an ability to deal with
numerous integrities, in facts often one of the main difference between managers and
leaders is that a leader seek to recognize and influence intangibles such as energy,
morale, timing, and momentum.

Experience -- where they have been:- The greater the challenges you have faced as a
leader in the past, the more likely followers are to give you a chance in the present.
Experience does not guarantee credibility but it encourages people to give you a chance
to prove that you are capable

Past success – what they have done:- Nothing speaks to followers like a good track
record. First attainment of leadership will not point to past success to help people believe
on you but by the time you proceed further to higher position you will begin to record
positive past track record therefore in leadership it is importance to take risk and
succeed. Followers had another reason to trust leadership ability and to listen to what
you have to say.
Ability – what they can do:- The bottom line for followers is what a leader is capable
of. They want to know whether that person can lead the team to victory. Ultimately, that
is the reason people will listen to you and acknowledge you as their leader, for as soon
as they realized you could no longer capable of deliver, they will stop listening and
following you. John C Maxwell

Kenneth Blanchard and Paul Hersey define leadership as any attempt to influence, the
behaviour of an individual or group.

James Macgregor takes leadership further, arguing that transforming leadership is a

relationship that raises the vision, values and aspiration of both the leader and the
followers to the next levels of expectation.

The contemporary literature of leadership and management argued that if a leader is one
who holds a position of authority and responsibility, then every Christian is not leader,
some are some are not but if leader mean a person who enter into a relationship with
another person to achieve a common goal, then all Christian should be a leader. In other
ward all Christians exercise leadership by attempting to make a difference in the lives of
those around them (TBCS lecture notes by Pst Oladele Olabode)

Wishnu Wardhena described “Leadership is both a research area and a practical skill
encompassing the ability of an individual, group or organization to lead, influence or
guide other individuals, teams or entire organizations to achievement”

Leadership is a matter of intelligence, humaneness, courage and discipline. Reliance on

intelligence alone results in rebelliousness, Exercise of humaneness alone results in
weakness. Fixation on trust results in violence while Excessive discipline and Sternness
in command results in cruelty. When one has all five virtues together, each appropriate
to us function then one can be a leader.
Leadership is a process by which an executive can direct, guide and influence the
behaviour and work of others towards accomplishment of specific goals in a given
situation. Leadership is the ability of a manager to induce the subordinates to work with
confidence and zeal.

Leadership is the potential to influence behaviour of others, it is also defined as the

capacity to influence a group towards the realization of a goal, Leaders are required to
develop future vision and to motivate the organizational member to what they want to
achieved

2.3.2 TYPES OF LEADERSHIP

9 Transactional styles
10 bureaucratic styles

1 Coaching leadership A coaching leader is someone who can quickly

recognize their team members’ strengths, weaknesses and motivations to help each
individual improve. This type of leader often assists team members in setting smart goals

employers as well as the employees they manage

of new skills, free thinking, empowerment, revisits company objectives and fosters
confident company culture. Leaders who coach are often seen as valuable mentors

Challenges while this types of leadership has many advantages it can be more time

autocratic leadership type. They mostly focusing on delegating responsibility to the team
members without supervision. The laissez-faire leaders does not spend their time

always pushing towards a goal or deadline. The fast paced work environment can also
create miscommunications or a lack of clear instructions.

8 Transformational leadership style The transformational leadership is similar

to the coach style in that it focuses on clear communication, goal-setting and employee
motivation. However, instead of placing the majority of the energy into each employee’s
individual goals, the transformational leader is driven by a commitment to organizational
objectives. For transformational leaders spend much of their time on overarching goals,

their leaders, it is generally believe that leaders is a person of integrity and authentic
characteristic

Trustworthiness is strongly tied to values and ethics. Members are drawn to leaders
who take stand on important principles
3 DECISIVE A strong leader exercises good judgment, appreciates informed input,
and welcome difference opinions. The best leader, however have to remain decisive.
Deliberate decision – making involves:

* Building an accurate, full spectrum map of all possible outcomes

* Predicting where all these paths made lead,

* Reaching a decision by weighing various solutions.

Great leaders learn conscientiously from every decision, whether good or bad, in order to
better inform subsequent decision.

4 INDEPENDENT THINKER One of the most important factors of an effective

leadership is the ability to be a good thinker. Good thinkers solve problem and never
lack ideas to build their team or their organization

In order to stimulate fresh and innovative ideas, leaders must spend time reading
books, listening to podcast and talking with innovative thinkers you may only get
one or two applicable ideas to your situation from every hour of efforts, but that
new idea, modified to your team could be a breakthrough to the lasting success..
Many successful leaders block off time on their calendar to thinks through
challenges, opportunities and ideas.

5 POSITIVE The most effective leaders remain positive and inspiring.

People expect their leaders to be energized and passionate about the future. They need to
inspire team members with enthusiasm and strong belief in where the organization is
heading.

There is a 100 percent certainty that obstacles and failure will arise, which cause stress
and negativity to settle in. the positive leader has to control their reaction and stress to
remain positive in the midst of difficult and stressful time.
Leaders have to uplift their members’ spirits and give them hope. They need to see you
as leaders convinced in words, demeanor and actions so they also believed the obstacles
will be overcome and dreams fulfilled

This in turn leads other to be optimistic and hopeful about the course you are headed,
and willing to down that it takes to drive the business forward.

6 HUMILITY Exemplary leaders understand that no great achievement can

be accomplished alone, but requires the help of others. It is critical for leaders to adopt a
servant leadership mindset. This includes a willingness to listen and respond
appropriately to feedback and to admit mistakes as appropriate, humble leaders lack
pride and pretense, and instead are interested in diverse views and ideas.

They operate with self-effacing, humor, give credit to others, and live down –to –earth in
their interactions with others. An effective leader must be ready to admit, often when
they are wrong or made mistake. A humble leader will step up and apologize when
appropriate. Everyone is full of flaws and drops the ball but the most effective leaders
remain humble and unassuming, always willing to learn and grow to benefit the
organization and its individuals.

7 CONFLICT RESOLUTION Every office environment and every group will

have conflict. As draining and stressful as conflict can be, it is not the actual conflict that
is the primary problem, the real issues is how we handle the conflict that matters.

An effective leader manages and resolves conflicts to produce positive outcomes. The
leader understands and effectively applies the art of diplomacy in the workplace

Conflict is actually a good things in many contexts, it can help drive positive outcomes
arising from creativity, strengthen bonds between colleagues and permit diverse
perspectives that benefit the entire group and the decision often a leader should not step
into a conflict among co-workers to enable them to work through the disagreement
however if the conflict begins infringing on the goal you are trying to achieve or the
process for how the work gets done you need to address it whether indirectly or directly.

One tool that is found effective over the years for conflict resolution is to prepare for the
hard discussion by

 Considering any false assumptions or conclusions reached without all the facts
 Considering the situation from all perspectives, including the counterparty to the
discussion. This helps better plan the message and meeting.

Conflict can feel less stressful and more manageable with a methodical approach that
includes being flexible and adaptable.

8 VISSIONARY Another top leadership trait is the ability to look ahead with a
sense of direction and concern for the future of the organization. Strong leaders see
beyond the present and plan strategically for the long term,

They engage their team in a forward looking manner to sell the vision in order inspire
and motivate them. Leaders cannot be content with the status quo, rather they have to
focus on how things should be better in the future. An effective leader is one who can
clearly outline for the team why staying where they presently are is unacceptable, and
cast a vision of the there they need to achieve for long term success. The leader must
make it so unacceptable to stay put and so appealing to achieve the vision that everyone
rows in the same direction to get there.

Leaders need a destination in mind when asking a team to join them on a journey into an
uncertain future.

9 TEAM BUILDER It is critical for a leader to invest in an empower team member

in order to reach full potential, just because you assemble a talented group of individuals
together does not mean you will automatically be a great team. We have all seen
examples of this in the sporting events and in business, rather great team building begins
with building unity, which starts with the leader.

 To rally a team around a common goal or vision, the leader has to see the vision
and constantly keep the team focused on it.
 When team members share a common goal, they pull together and outshine
competitors who are merely a combination of great individuals
 When team is passionate about what they are trying to accomplish, it builds
accountability and drives the team
 Effective team building includes celebrating wins together, or encouraging wins
together or encouraging them when efforts fail

If you want to win as a leader, embrace the value and importance of building cohesive
and unified teams

10 PERSONABLE Building genuine relationship with those you lead is a key to

being a successful leader. A leader must remain approachable, accessible, understanding
of their employees needs and committed to building strong relationship. One of the best
way to do this is to be with those you lead, walk the halls, understand their
responsibilities and challenges and spend time with people you serves

Leadership expert John C Maxwell advises leaders to “walk slowly through the crowd,
remember people’s names, smile at everyone, and be quick to offer help” for the
most effective leaders remain accessible, approachable and accountable

11 APPRECIATIVE One of the most valuable tools at a leader’s disposal is the use
of two very powerful words “thank you” showing appreciation to your team and staff is
foundational to long-team success. Appreciation makes team members feel valued eighty
–one percent of people say they are willing to people say they are willing to work harder
if they have an appreciative leaders. Your team members need to be noticed,
reorganization and appreciation for their efforts, Is very important.

A leader who regularly expresses appreciation also helps build the addition also helps
build the additional key leadership traits of humility. Optimism, and being personable,
takes time today to thank someone on your team and make it a regular habit.

12 ADAPTABLE A leader displays adaptability by being comfortable with

change and growth. There is no doubt that in today’s business climate things change
rapidly, and the best leaders have to be willing to try new things and be willing to fail in
order to grow. As we expand our willingness to try new things. Our adaptability muscle
expands.

A great leader turns the relentless and unending uncertainty that their people face into
opportunity and growth for our followers need to see that we will try new approaches
and techniques to meet the demand of a rapidly changing business world or church.

This instills confidence and helps lead a changed culture needed in today’s legal
environment.

13 ENCOURAGING THE HEART The final trait to highlight is encouragement.

Driving extraordinary results in business is hard, in order to ensure that everyone on the
team is rowing in the same direction,

 it is critical to regularly encourage and engage your team’s hearts and minds
 Express pride in their accomplishments
 Make a point of regularly thanking them for their hard work and achievement.
 Celebrate important wins and create a sense of community and camaraderie by
telling stories recognizing individual contributions.
 Reinforce your team’s core values and standards
All of these will pay significant dividends in driving extraordinary results.

Leadership is not about titles, position, or power. Every person has the ability and
potential to lead others to great achievement.

Effective leadership makes a difference in people lives and is differentiator in a

competitive market place every one of us can become a better leader no matter where we
are starting. Great leadership can be learned, but importantly, successful and inspiring
leadership takes hard work and effort.

Key characteristic of effective leadership by Baker Donelson

The researcher opinion, Leadership is ordained of God usually comes unsought, in other
words, in God’s kingdom leadership doesn’t come to one who is looking for it. It is not a
matter of big shot or by doing every thing to be seeing rather it is the faithful ones that
are usually ushered into leadership. Faithfulness in the little things is one of the
qualifications for promotion into bigger things.

While personality is a prime factor in the natural leadership, the true leader, influence
others not by the power of his own personality alone but by the inspiration of the Holy
Spirit. True spiritual leadership can never be self-generated.

It is a general principle that we can influence and lead others only as far as we have gone
ourselves. Leadership is not successful by mere pointing the way but it is trodden the
way by oneself

The researcher believed that a true leadership is leadership by examples of course

leadership is not by might or by power but by acceptability when once subordinate
accept you, influence became light, understanding and fellowship will continue to flow
therefore productivity will emerge.
In addition to the fact that one must receive inspiration from the Spirit of God to
discover the purpose and vision for life, it is also essential to understand that you were
created with natural and inherent gifts, abilities, and talent that enhance your effective
leadership.

2.3 4 SERVANT LEADERSHIP

Servant leadership is a leadership philosophy in which the goal of the leader is to serve.
This is different from traditional leadership where the leader’s main focus is the thriving
of their company or organization.

A servant leader shares power, puts the needs of the employees first and helps people
develop and perform as highly as possible. Instead of the people working to serve the
leader, the leader exists to serve the people.

A servant leader always focus on:-

 Do those served grow as person?

 Do they while being served, become healthier, wiser, freer more autonomous, more
likely themselves to become servants
 When leaders shift their mindset and serve first, they benefit as well as their
employees in and the growth became enormous
 While the organization grows as well as due to the employees growing
commitment and engagement . by Robert K Green lea

2.3.5 THE SPIRIT FILLED CHRISTAIN LEADER

John C Maxwell said “Truly the Holy Spirit’s filling is a must for every spiritual leader,
without His ministry in and through our lives we will not properly fill the leadership
roles in which God has placed us. But through the power of the Holy Spirit, we can see
Him do the impossible”
Sometime we become a little fuzzy on what a spirit filled life looks like, here are some
indicators that reveals the Holy Spirit filling in your life.
,

Why does an individual step forward to lead other people? For every person the answer
is different. A few do it to survive, some do it to make money, many desire to build a
business or organization, but every servant leaders, leadership is all about influence the
world for a positive change

1A LEADER MUST GIVE UP TO GO UP Any stinging leader can never

successfully maintain top leadership for there is a common saying charisma without
character leads to crises in short every servant leader must bear in mind that even the
master of the universe who is the master of all gave all therefore we must be ready give
up when it demand.

B SACRIFICE IS THE HEART OF LEADERSHIP

There is a common misperception among people who are not leaders that leadership is
all about the position, perks and power that come from rising in an organization.
Therefore many people today want to climb up the corporate ladder because they believe
that freedom, power, and wealth are the prizes waiting at the top

The life of a leader looks glamorous to people on the outside, but the reality is that
leadership requires sacrifice. A leader must give up to go up.

In a recent years we have discovered that many leaders shares and abused their
organizations such as nations, company even churches for their personal benefit which
often result to scandals because of their greed and selfishness whereas the heart of a
good leadership is sacrifice
If you desire to become the best leader, you can be, then you need to be willing to make
sacrifices in order to lead well. If that is your desire then here are some things you need
to know about as law of sacrifice.

C THERE IS NO SUCCESS WITHOUT SACRIFICE Every person who has

achieved any success in life has made sacrifices to do so. Many working people
dedicates four or more years and pay heavily to get the tools needed before embarking
on careers

 Athletes sacrifice countless hours in the gym and on the practice field preparing
themselves to perform at a high level.
 Parents give up much of their free time and sacrifice their resources in order to do a
good job raising their children.

Philosopher Poer Ralph Waldo Emerson observed “for every thing you have missed, you
gained something else, and for everything you have gain you lose something” for life is
a series of trades, one thing for another.

Leaders must give up, in order to go up, that is true of every leader regardless of
profession. Talk to leaders and you will discover that they made several sacrifices.
Effective servant leaders is much sacrifices is means of dedication to what is best.

2 LEADERS ARE OFTEN ASKED TO GIVE UP MORE THAN OTHERS The

heart of leadership is putting others ahead of yourself. It’s doing what is the best for the
team. In this view the researcher believe that have to give up their right Just as Pst
Gerald Brooks, a leadership speaker “ when you become a leader, you lose the right to
think about yourself. When you have no responsibility you can do pretty things you
want, once you take on responsibility you start to experiences limitations in what you
can do for yourself for hence you take the mantles of leadership, you automatically have
to accept the responsibility and accountability that goes with it
For every person, the nature of the sacrifice may be different. Everyone who leads gives
up other opportunities, some give up beloved hobbies, many gives up aspects of their
personal lives. Though circumstances may be different from one person to another but
the principle doesn’t change, leadership means sacrifices.

3 YOU MUST KEEP GIVING UP TO STAY UP Most people are willing to

acknowledge that sacrifices are necessary early in a leadership career in order to make
progress.

 They will take undesirable territory to make a name for themselves.

 They will take their family to a less desirable city to accept a better position.
 They will take a temporary cut in pay for greater opportunities for advancement

However the problem for leadership comes when they think they have earned the right to
stop making sacrifices whereas in leadership, sacrifices is an ongoing process, not a one
time payment. If a leaders have to give up to go up, then they have to give up even more
to stay up.

4 THE HIGHER THE LEVEL OF LEADERSHIP, THE GREATER THE

SACRIFICE Have you ever been part of an auction? It’s an exciting experience. An
item comes up for a bid, and everyone in the room gets excited when the bidding open,
lots of people jumps in and take part. However as the price goes higher and higher what
happen? There are fewer and fewer bidden until the winner will be emerged. It is the
same in leadership the higher you go the more it is going to cost you.

It doesn’t matter what kind of leadership career you peak you will have to make
sacrifices The 21 Irrefutable Law of leadership by John C Maxwell

A a spirit filled leader is personally yielded The key to effective public leadership
is a genuine private walk with God
B a spirit filled leader models godliness The lifestyle of a spiritual leader is to be an
open book. A living testimony easily see, clearly examined and able to be emulated.

C a spirit filled leader leads others in sanctification. When God’s Spirit is in

control of our lives and leadership there will be a noticeable direction away from sin,
both publicly, at home and at church.

D a spirit fielded leader maintains Spiritual priorities Right priorities are the
product of God’s leading. Without the Holy Spirit’s guidance, you will never truly
fulfilled God’s priorities for your life

E a spirit filled leader leads other to Christ Acts 1: 8 instruct us to ”be

witnesses,” simply put, product of the spirit at work. Your life will be a soul winner’s
heart

F a spirit filled leader maintains oversight:- Spirit led oversight will make you
both observant and obedient. In other words, you will notice things you never noticed
and the Holy Spirit will lead you to take action and to obey His impulses

G a spirit filled leader encourages orderliness When the Holy Spirit is active and
working, orderliness will the natural result. The order might be as simple as picking up a
piece of trash or as complicated as restructuring your adult Sunday school.

H a spirit filled leader remains impartial The Holy Spirit lead you to serve every
member of your church with the same concern and intensity. He will give patience,
understanding, and caution where you might otherwise be reactionary or emotionally
charged

I a spirit filled leader is gracious in trials Heb 4 : 16 teaches us that we can

“come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help
in time of need.” A peaceful, gracious and strong Spirit through the most difficult of
times is supernatural. Apart from the Holy Spirit we tend to fall apart therefore soft
words became the most important key.

for instance, looking at a case of Gideon and Ephramites in Judges 8 : 1 – 3 “And the
men of Ephraim said unto him, why hast thou served us thus? That thou calledst us not,
when thou wentest to fight with the Midiainites? And they did chide with him sharply.

And he said unto them, what have I done now in comparison of you? Is not the gleaning
of the grapes of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abiezer?” KJV

God hath delivered into your hands the princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb and what was I
able to do in comparison of you? Then their anger was abated toward him, when he had
said that

 The scriptural truth is that, a soft answer turns away wrath played out well in the
situation between Gideon and the aggrieved men of Ephraim over the battle
against Midianites. Therefore every effective leader should approach every
grievances with soft words stop being hash in treating issue
 In all good conscience and truth, Gideon had sought God and indeed the support of
other Israelites including the men of Ephraim in the present war against Median.
Every effective Christian leader must be ready to entreat God for direction in
every issue
 When Ephramites turned around to confront Gideon for not mobilizing them to
join the battle from the beginning. They did not bear in mind that it was God’s
battle, as He scaled down the number of soldiers earlier assembled for the battle.
Just as the attitude of the feuding Ephraimites was not founded on reasonable
grounds even today many of subordinates may not understand our plight except
they are carried along
J a spirit filled leader exercises spiritual authority Holy Spirit led authority will
lead authoritatively but kindly, and it will always seek to resolve discord rather than stir
it up, this kind of authority responds kindly to those who disagree and still loves and
gives from a deep heart of compassion and grace.

It is exciting to see the ministry that can take place when we are filled with the spirit. In
our own might and power, we can accomplish nothing of eternal significance, but by His
Spirit we can bear spiritual fruit for God’s glory.

Indicators of Spirit filled leader by Paul Chappell

2.3.6 TMPACT OF SPIRT FILLED CHRISTIAN IN LEADERSHIP

Every church leader is called to shape others leaders at the church. So imagine you make
this calling a priority. You identify gifts to be “stirred up” 2Tim 1 :6, deploy disciple
makers, and empower gospel proclaimers. You pour into people through equipping
classes, personal discipleship, and ministry opportunities, and people grow knowledge of
the gospel increases, doctrine becomes more robust, devotional life deepens, ministry
skills sharpen.

It is obvious significant for every Christian leader never to undermined or forget the
power of the Holy Spirit in leadership. The Holy Spirit plays an essential role in taking
the raw materials of gospel potential and turning them into the sweet fruit of the gospel
impact. We see this throughout the scripture especially in the life of Peter in the Acts of
apostle.

Remember Peter’s life had been devastated by the death of Jesus, his master actually
damp his honour, his courage and spirit crushed, even after Jesus resurrection, peter
needed Jesus special attention and encouragement for leading Christ flock

In view of this fact the researcher wants to look into effect of the Holy Spirit in the early
Christian leaders
1 The presence of the Holy Spirit leads to confidence and courage, even in the face
of opposition. After the Holy Spirit came upon the early disciples, they all began to
speak in an unknown languages, so striking and loud, apparently was this event that
thousands people were amazed just like now that the church of God lives before the eyes
of the world of intrigue and interest as well as mockery and disgust.

Remember Peter and his gang had spent the past weeks huddled in fear in the upper
rooms doing anything to keep out of public view but the presence of the Holy Spirit
energize Peter veritably leaps up to rebuke the scoffers and explain the situation more so
he advantages to proclaim a sermon of legendary boldly and clarity, calling his listeners
to repent and believe

The presence of the Holy Spirit will spur leaders to stand up to those who would
disparage truth and righteousness and to stand up for the cause of Christ and the gospel

2 The presence of the Holy Spirit leads to dependence on scripture In the

sermon Peter quotes Joel 2 :28 – 32 Psalm 16 : 8 – 11 and Psalm 110 : 1 The Holy Spirit
allowed him to quotes passages he had never heard for the Holy brings words of the
Holy scripture to mind as an obedient heart rushes to stand up for Christ.

The Spirit and scripture always go together. The Spirit of truth breathes out the word of
truth and will prepare your potential leaders for the ministry. Help them know the
scriptures then watch as the Holy Spirit leads them to use it as the centerpiece of their
ministry to others.

3 The presence of the Holy Spirit leads to holy forgetfulness. Peter had plenty of
ministry failures in the gospel, he denied Jesus, yet he did not allow his past failures
control him or stop him from standing in front of the crowd to propagate the gospel. As
leader never allow your past failures to over shadow the righteousness of Christ in your
life.
As the Holy Spirit continue to works we are encourage to forget the failure of our past
and claim the day for Christ.

4 the presence of the Holy Spirit leads to a focus on Christ and the gospel when
people were asking, why all these Christian are talking in the foreign languages, within
few minutes Peter turned the situation into a clear explanation of the gospel “Jesus is
Lord; you have sinned for crucified Him. You must cry to Him for salvation and
forgiveness and this can only be done by genuine repentance and committing to identify
yourself with Him and His people.

The skill of turning a conversation to Christ or turning any other interaction into an
opportunity to explanation of gospel is an effect of the Holy Spirit

5 The presence of the Holy Spirit leads to fruit in ministry It is possible to be

skilled in ministry but bear little fruit. We can have knowledge and best practices and
even sincere desire, but still act in our own strength but could lead to nothing, for the
branch that are separated from the vine can never produce fruit

The presence of the Holy Spirit empowered Peter’s message to produces three thousand
souls turned to Christ in faith Acts 2 : 41

As Christian leaders nurturing our devotional lives, deepening our doctrine, and
sharpening our ministry skills, let’s look to and depend on the Holy Spirit to the Holy
Spirit to leverage all these and let Him bear fruit for Christ in us.

2.4 WHAT IS CHURCH

The word church is derived from the Greek word called Ecclesia which means the called
out

Apostle Paul Expressed in the second Epistle to the Corinthians 6 : 14 -7: 1 “ Do not be
equal yoke together with an unbelievers, for what do righteousness and wickedness
have in common? What fellowship can light have with of darkness? What harmony
is there between Christ and Belial? What does believer have in common with
unbeliever? What agreement is there between the temple of the Living God and idol
For we are the temple of the Living God. As God has said I will be their God and they
be my people. Therefore come out from among them and be separated says the Lord.
Touch not unclean things and I will receive you, I will be a father to you and you will
be my sons and daughters says the Lord Almighty.

Since we have these promises, dear friends let us purify ourselves from everything
that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God
( NIV )

According to the author of Dakes Annotated Reference Bible, Greek term for the
Church is Ekklesia which mean an assembly of citizens summoned by a crier to a place
of council to transact business.

It could also be a local company of Christians who regularly meet for religious services
and to functioning of the local or general Christian works. It may interest us to know
further that the English word for Church is derived from the Greek adjective Kyrikon
(KPIKOU) Which means belonging to the Lord! In other words means “the Lord house”
The idea is used to designate a Christian place of worship, while the New Testament
“Ekklesia” as Church translate the Greek ekklesia meaning an assembly of people.

2.4.1 WHAT IS CHURCH GROWTH

Church growth is the combination of two term, church and growth, for the proper
understanding of each word or clarity, the researcher explain each term and merged
them together to form a proper meaning.

The term church is derived from Greek word Ekklesia this is made up of Ek which means
“out or from” while klesia is derived from the term Kaleo which mean “to call”
therefore church (ekklesia) means “called out”

In other word defined church as a congregation of the called out ones. 1Pet 2: 9, “you
are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that
you may proclaim the praise of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous
light”

Meaning of growth: growth comes from two term grow and the. Grow came from the
old English word grow an which means “to flourish, increase, develop, get bigger” the is
a suffix used to form nouns of actions because grow is an action word, it can take the to
form a noun of action growth

Biblically growth is translated from the Greek lexicon Auxano which means To cause to
grow, to cause to increase, and to become greater in size therefore growth can be
defined as a process of growing, increasing, or becoming greater in size

Church growth, can be define as the process of growing, increasing or developing the
congregation of the called out ones

In other words, church growth means the physical, mental and spiritual increase or
development of the called out ones.

According to Wagner Church growth is that science which investigates the nature,
function and health of the Christian church as it relates specifically to the effective
implementation of God’s commission to make disciples of all nations. (Gibbs 1995)
Wagner emphasized that church growth is simultaneously a theological conviction and
an applied science which strives to combine the eternal principles of God’s word with
the best insight of contemporary social and behavioral sciences.

Church growth movement (February 2010)

In general you could say that the “ the great commission or to spread the gospel
throughout the world Mt 28: 18 – 20., is the goal of any church, there are innumerable
ways that we can do that. How your church fulfills “going into the world and making
disciple” depends on what your church and it members are called to do.

Church growth does not only mean getting bigger for the sake of getting bigger. In fact
church growth may not mean more people at all rather it is doing more or getting the
right people to in order to commit the important ministries

2.4.2 TYPES OF CHURCH GROWTH: Here are three kinds of growth you can look for in
your church:

1 Numerical church growth: Numerical growth happens when churches reach

more people and grows in size. These kinds of growth was reported in the early church
and recorded in the book of Acts. Despite persecution, a lack of buildings, and little
formal training, the early church grew as people shared the gospel with friends and
neighbours. Luke tells us people were added to the church on a daily basis, that’s
church growth

The desire churches have to reach more people for Christ should come from God’s
heart for the world and understanding Jesus’ mission to seek and save the lost.
Churches that want to grow in numerical should go out and out live a desire to live out
the great commission.

2 Spiritual church growth: Spiritual growth happens when the people in the church
come to love and follow Jesus. People in the church should grow to love the Lord with
all their heart, mind, soul and strength and take intentional steps to obey His
commands. That’s discipleship

This kind of growth is also reported in the book of Acts, as you find new believers
gathered in homes for community and prayer. As the church grew in size, it also grew
spiritually. The early church wasn’t content to make converts, they wanted to make
disciples.

Spiritual growth is much harder to measures, when we talk about church growth it is
not limited to attendance and monetary

3 Kingdom church growth: Kingdom growth happens when there is both spiritual
and numerical growth. When individual churches grow numerically and spiritually,
there is a great opportunity for kingdom growth.

The Bible says the church grew through multiplication, for example, the church in
Antioch prayed, fasted and sent leaders out to start new churches Acts 13: 1 -5

This intentional decision to get smaller resulted in the church getting larger.

Ironically, it was the persecution of the early church that led some of the first Christian
to spread throughout the world, taking their faith with them and building the kingdom
in the process. Church fuel commission

2.4.3 KEYS TO CHURCH GROWTH

Patricia (2012) revealed that, The most important key to church growth is to identify
your unique qualities. The beauty of the body of Christ is that God uses everyone in a
unique way and those unique qualities, that each church possesses, is what God uses to
create a beautiful tapestry of churches.

Church growth is not about competing with the ministry down the street but more
about developing the people God has planted in the local church to be used by God
with their unique gifts.

The researcher believed people are called to churches for a specific purpose. We are on
a journey and the church helps us develop as Christians and supports our unique
calling.

1      Know where the church is going: there is an old saying if you fail to plan, you plan
to fail. This is true in business as well as churches.
Having a well defined vision, mission and values statement sets direction for the
organization and developing strategic plan or to map out the steps to get there is how a
vision is achieved

2 care for church members: Church members are one of the Key customer groups
in a church. Understanding their unique needs and ensuring their needs are met within
the scope of the vision, is critical to church growth. For example if the church has
volunteer opportunities, make sure the application and communication process is a
good experience.

Or if a volunteer is given a job or responsibility, try to make sure they know what is
expected of them and have what they need to do their Job. The goal is to provide
support for their needs.

3 provide opportunity to serve: At the core of all of us is a desire to serve others.

Jesus did it and as Christian, we need to be provided with opportunities to help other
people.

Whether it is serving meals to the less fortunate, organizing mission trips, or helping
others in the time of crisis, opportunities to serve offer members the chance to use
their gifts to help God’s people.

A well defined strategic plan can help identify the kinds of service opportunities that
support the vision of the church to growth

Evangelism by benevolence just a story about a certain Christian sister married to

Muslim unfortunately this Muslim lost his work and the sister probably took the
complaint to her church and church bought a cycle list (popularly known as keke
napepep) sowing machine, Refrigerator and rent a shop for her establishment, the
husband (the Muslim) immediately willingly surrender his life to Jesus and became a
Christian for the wonderful love shown to him and his wife by the church. In your
opinion how many souls this benevolence evangelism could bring to this church and
feet of the master of the universe?
4 create a welcoming experience: There are not many things as awkward for a
church visitor to be ignored or to be overwhelmed with attention. Everyone wants to
be greeted but not everyone is comfortable being inundated with unwelcome
attention.

Try to remember that most people who visit a church are looking for something even
possibly to have time with God. They might be exploring the Christian faith for the first
time or checking to see if the church culture is a good fit, regardless it is important to
make the experience as positive as possible.

5 create an Inviting Atmosphere: it is unfortunate, but true, that we are a

consumer driven society and people are naturally drawn to an aesthetically appealing
environment. People like to be proud of where they worship, so provision of an
environment that is comfortable, clean and orderly is important.

Therefore pay attention to things like clean, stocked restrooms, clean glass surfaces,
and freshly vacuumed carpeting can go a long way in creating a comfortable
atmosphere for members and guests.

6 Proper management of Church Resources: There needs to be good oversight

and management of God’s money! God provides financial resources to churches and
there is responsibility that comes with managing those resources.

Churches that are good stewards of ministry funds, and diligent with their budgeting
processes, are better prepared financially for the needs of expanding facilities, updating
equipment, and other necessities to operate a church.

God’s money is the most important money in the world to manage well. Therefore,
good stewardship of the ministry funds is very important responsibility call

7    Enjoy the Ride: whether you are the senior pastor, a business administrator or a
church secretary, the call should be enjoyable, fulfilling and balance.

Spending time with God is what fuels the call and the anointing to do what needs to be
done in a church. “Do not get so caught up in the ministry of the Lord that we forget
the Lord of the Ministry.” Smart church management by Patricia (2012)
2.4.4 EFFECTIVE STRACTEGICS FOR CHURCH GROWTH:

Strategizing about growing once church ministries and programme or it’s membership
in general, can be hard to know where to begin and what issues to focus on.
Fortunately, there are many basic church growth strategies you can use to get on the
right track.

Church growth is not simply an interesting theoretical subject. For many churches, it’s a
necessity, so what are the best ways to grow a church? Whether you are a brand new
church plant, or an established church with declining or stagnant attendance, your
needs are the same.

What step can you take to grow up your church? How can you make sure that you are
on a destination for a families visiting? If you are looking for new strategies to grow
your church attendance, you are not alone.

Church growth is important because it is an indicator that the ministry you are doing is
not stagnant. Church growth depends on the ministries and the mission of the church.

According to Kristine Ensor “churches today have continued the mission, but many still
face difficulties in developing their churches. The older generations are dying off, and
younger people have less interest in the traditional ways.’

Churches that have focused on the younger generations and small groups have seen
improvement but many churches are opposed to changing too much about their
outreach

The reality is churches must grow to survive and spread the word, but growth does not
always mean building a large facility and filling the aisles. Today many churches are
spreading God’s word virtually and forming small groups of Christians to pray and
worship together in different ways.

The benefit of growing a church comes with reaching more people, sharing God’s
message and making difference in the people lives.

Therefore here are suggested strategies for church growth

1 DEVELOP A MISSION STAEMENT PRIORITIZING GROWTH A church mission
statement is the reason for its existence. Some may say your church does not need a
mission statement since the obvious goal is to spread God’s word

Excellent missions are more than just vague statements. They give a purpose to the
organization and lay down the road to reach their goal

After you construct and agree on a mission statement for your church, you must ensure
that all church programs and activities help fulfill the mission

If you currently have programs that do not contribute to the mission do not feel guilty
for canceling them and finding new ways to reach similar groups of people

2 BUILD STRONGER CHILDREN AND YOUTH PROGRAMS A church that does not

focus on its children and youth is destined to fail. Younger church members are
essential to building your church. Activities that speak to children on their terms and
communicate with them in way they are comfortable will help encourage membership.

3 ENCOURAGE INVOLVEMENT One of the best parts of a church is the community

and friendship people form. During the services parishioners to shake hands with those
nearby and introduce themselves is very important.

Welcome committees should be a large part of your church and reach out in person
and online, your church leadership can assign different members of your welcome
committees or follow up terms to reach out to new virtual service attendees and set up
meeting with those who attend church service but do not take in other activities

By taking a leading role in building these relationships your church increases people’s
connections to the church and helps them live healthier lives.

4 BUILD RELATIONSHIPS WITHIN YOUR COMMUNITY Your Church Can Increase

involvement in your church by asking members to volunteer for local nonprofits, offer
ways to help the homeless, drop off meals to the elderly and give childcare options to
parents who cannot afford it. Involvement in these activities will help your church
members share what being Christian really means community to caring environment
they want to join.
Another possible way to increase membership is to allow community to use your
church facilities on the non activities days this can build a strong friendship.

5 ORGANIZING OF HOME CELS Home cell is importance in church growth hence it

enhance effective full discipleship if well monitored, it could meta- form to a full church

2.4.5 THE ROLES OF EFFECTIVE LEADERS IN CHURCH GROWTH

With respect to church leadership, the roles of effective leaders in church growth
implies that the church gives direction, motivates, reprimands and develops a set
objective along with his group and resolves individual or group needs within the
church. These among the others are perceived, as ways towards the church growth.

Leadership is indeed a dynamic reciprocal process of personal influence by which a

manager or a leader shapes the attitudes and activities of others towards the
achievement or attainment of organizational objectives.

Just as Oluasegun (2005) defined leadership as the ability to gain consensus and
commitment to common objectives beyond organizational requirements which are
attained with experience or contribution and satisfaction on the parts of the working
group. It is therefore implies that the roles of effective church leaders is responsible for
the achievement of the group objectives and it is essential for the trust and
cooperation from the both side to be evidence all the time.

Continual change in growth is an important ingredient to shaping the future of the

church therefore the role of the effective church leader is an important one.

In order to have sustainable church growth, the current church leaders needs to
prepare others for effective leadership by educating, equipping, enriching and
empowering them for the work of the church in general and life in the world at large.

An effective church leaders must not cover sin, but be sincere, preach the gospel,
exhort, rebuke, correct, guide, instruct, mobilize, love, care, visit, organize prayer
convocations, support superiors, mentoring and have a clear vision of the local
assembly and the church in general must be attainable
Effective church leaders must follow Biblical principles of servant hood to ensure
church growth, this implies that church leaders must not be an autocratic, unlike some
leaders that are all knowing, not ready to listen or take correction. Every effective
leader that enhance church growth must be willing to continue leaning from God and
even his subordinate when necessary

It is a duty of every effective church leader to understand church government, and

politics, the effect of diversity in theology and worship and the spiritual formation of
the church followers, program, planning and administration to enhance growth.

Effective church leaders must be prepared to emphasize and demonstrate ethical

leadership, personal responsibility, and community service through the mitigation,
development, and maintainace of positive functioning relationships.

2.4.6 WHAT DOES BIBLE SAYS ABOUT CHURCH GROWTH

Here are some powerful Bible references about the church growth

Acts 2 : 47 praising God and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to
their number day by day those who were being saved.

Matthew 16 : 18 And I tell you, you are Peter and on this rock I will build my church,
and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it.

John 12 : 32 And I when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself

1Corinthians 3 : 11 For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid
which is Jesus Christ.

Acts 9 : 31 So the Church throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria had peace and
was being Built up. And walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy
Spirit, it multiplied.

1 Peter 2 :2 Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may
grow up into salvation.
1Timothy 4 : 13 until I come, devote yourself to the Public reading of scripture, to
exhortation, to teaching.

Colossians 1 : 10 So as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to Him,

bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God

Ephesians 4 : 12 – 13 To equip the saints for the work of the ministry, for building
up the body of Christ until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of
the son of God, to mature manhood to the stature of the fullness of Christ.

John 12 : 24 Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and
dies, it remains alone, but if it dies, it bears much fruits

Philippians 1 : 6 and I am sure of this, that He who began a good work in you will
bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.

Ezekiel 47 : 1 – 10 Afterward he brought me again unto the door of the house, and
behold, waters issued out from under the threshold of the house eastward, for the
forefront of the house stood toward the east, and the waters came down from the
right side of the house, at the south side of the alter

2 Then brought he me out of the way of the gate northward, and led me about the
way without unto the utter gate by the way that looked eastward, and behold,
there ran out waters on the right side,
3 And when the man that had the line in his hand went forth eastward, he
measured a thousand cubits and he brought me through the waters, the waters
were to the ankles
4 Again he measured a thousand and brought me through the waters, the waters
were to the knees. Again he measured a thousand and brought me through, the
waters were to the loins,
5 Afterward he measured a thousand and it was a river that I could not pass over,
for the waters were risen, waters to swim in, a river that could not be passed
over
6 And he said unto me, Son of man, hast thou seen this? Then he brought me and
caused me to return to the brink of the river.
7 Now when I had returned, behold at the bank of the river were very many trees
on the one side and on the other.
8 Then said he unto me, these waters issue out toward the east country, and go
down into the desert, and go into the sea, which being brought forth into the sea,
the waters shall be healed
9 And it shall to pass, that every thing that liveth, which moveth, whithersoever the
rivers shall come, shall live. And there shall be a very great multitude of fish,
because these waters shall come thither, for they shall be healed and every thing
shall live whither the river cometh.
10 And it shall come to pass that the fishers shall stand upon it from Engedi even
unto Englaim, they shall be a place to spread forth nets, their fish shall be
according to their kinds, as the fish of the great sea, exceeding many.

2.5 HINDERANCE TO CHURCH GROWTH

Dr Francis Akin John “ The greatest obstacles to church growth I see in many
denominational, independent and evangelical churches, are based on my consultation
and studies, here are some of the primary ones I have seen are” :-

1 A worn out Pastor: When the shepherd is exhausted and often hurting because of
conflict has no outreach, or evangelistic focus.

2 Inward focus: No church naturally defaults into an outward focus, instead, they
turn inward to meet internal needs unless they intentionally fight against that trend.

3     Bad preaching: Sometimes it’s not as Biblical sound as it should be. At other times,
it’s less than exciting, either way, it does not lead to growth

4      Evangelistic Apathy: This, too often starts at the top. A church that’s lost its fire
for evangelism usually settles into maintenance mode.

5 No growth strategy: The church assumes that just because they gathers and
enjoy it, others will come automatically. Meanwhile, the enemy who is a          strategist
Eph 6 : 10 – 12 works his plans to keep people away from the gospel.
6   Turf wars: It’s tough to reach outside the church, when everybody’s fighting to
keep his power inside church. Plus non believers aren’t interested in stepping          into
a battle ground.

8 Prayerlessness: I know this one sounds like a super spiritual reason, but I am not
shocked by the correlation between churches that do not grow much.
9 Unnecessary weights unnecessary weights among leadership and members often
quench the spiritual fire that majorly lead to coldness and as well as lead to
spiritual defeat Heb 12: 1` Josh 7: 5 -13 1Sam 15 : 1 – 11

10 Unbelief: unbelief hindered the work of Christ in Nazareth Mat 13 : 57 – 58

Church cannot grow in the mix of conflict, doubt, when there is no trust for one
another, in a case where people suspecting each other

11 Attempt to use Saul equipment delay David 1Sam 17 : 39 People ideology that
are not based on God instruction could fail you in church growth for the facts that
King Saul uses the equipment does not mean David must use the same equipment
therefore church growth must be build on God leadership.

12 Financial over burden It is true that money is very essential in the Church growth
but at the same time leadership should avoid unnecessary over burden members
to ensure there will be no rancor. In short any well meaningful church growth
leader should avoid unnecessary financial over burden. Assessment and levy
should be amicably otherwise it derives members from the church in steed of
growth

13 Poor discipleship: When baby believers remain babies after years of being
believers, they tend to become whiners’ strategy to help babies grow.

14 Retreat mentality: the researcher have found for years that the church has
become a place to retreat from the battles rather than a place to get re-armed for
the war. The church in retreat won’t grow.
15 Autocratic leadership when leadership became too power drunk, that they can
no longer listen or be corrected church can never grow. This habit kill church
rather than growth there is a common saying that charisma without good
character lead to crises, character without good manners equal to tea without
sugar

2.5.1 ROOT CAUSES OF HINDRANCES TO CHURCH GROWTH

The following are the root causes of hindrance to church in Methodist church Nigeria
especially the diocese of Kaduna.

A 1 lack of evangelism and mission work agenda Though Methodist church Nigeria
has a powerful vision and mission statement

Mission >> To consistently win more souls for Christ, > Develop Spiritually
fulfilled members and remain very active in serving humanity. While

Vision >> To be one of the largest and spiritually vibrant churches in Nigeria.

Unfortunately in the Dioceses of Kaduna, Evangelism is by member’s child birth which

is of course a temporary measure of between infanthood and adolescent, once they
crossed from secondary school to higher institutions they could move to any church of
their choice

2 Transfer of member The church records increase by way of transferred member

from one state or town to another, such sometime locates Methodist church possibly
closed to him or her or their tribal churches in the researcher’s view these are not
evangelism neither could these method enhance church growth.

3 misappropriation of evangelism fund Sometimes when some leaders are

delegated for some meeting the leadership would not mind used the money meant for
evangelism for transportation and accommodation calling such as parts of evangelism

4 lack of Mission Agenda Though at conference there a department of evangelism

and discipleship but in the diocese of Kaduna no budget for evangelism and Mission
work, if there is at all, it will be very minute it was discovered that the dioceses of
Kaduna did not engaged in any Mission work or any Missionary attach to her. Therefore
the church cannot grow
B autocratic leadership Autocratic leadership also known as authoritarian leadership
it is a leadership style, characterized by individual control over all decisions and little
impart from group members.

Autocratic leader’s typically make choices based on their ideas and judgments and
rarely accept advice from followers. Any leader or leadership that is over too known,
that will never listen or cannot be corrected, even when he or she is wrong cannot
grow church rather the church will scattered in his hand.

BOASTFUL LEADERS If humility is so important, why are leaders so arrogant? A recent

management column in the wall’s street journal appeared under the appealing
headline “the best Bosses are humble Bosses” the article reported that humble leaders
inspire close learn work, rapid leaning and high performance in their learning.

It is even reported that one human resources consulting firm, is planning to introduce
an assessment to identify personality traits that include Sincerity, Modesty, Fairness,
Truthfulness and unpretentiousness

Tesle CEO Elon Musk may be the most visible, influential, high impact leader in Silicon
valley, yet it is hard to imagine anyone with less modesty or unpretentiousness.

The world most valuable athletic Franchise never missed an opportunity to talk a big
game even though his team has not won a big game in decades.

All of which raises an obvious question, if humility so important why are so many
leaders today especially our most famous leaders are so arrogant? Or to flip the face of
too much evidence that humble leaders do, in fact outperformance arrogant leaders,
why is it so hard for leaders at every level to check their egos at the office door? For
one thing too many leaders could not do is to humble their selves and be ambitious, of
course, humility and ambition need not be at odds, indeed humility in the service of
ambition is the most effective and sustainable mindset for leaders who aspire to do big
things in a world filed with huge unknowns

Unfortunately we live in a world where ego gets attention but modesty gets results.
Where arrogance makes headline, humility makes a difference. Which means that all of
us as leaders or aspiring leaders, face questions of our own; Are we strong enough to
admit we don’t have all the answers? By Bill Taylor.
The researcher believed that, as long as leadership remained boastful and arrogance,
there will be no meaningful growth.

the membership in the church is one thing responsible for the lack of church growth in
the church.

The researcher also discovered that most of the church leadership lost interest on the
kingdom assignment therefore they are chasing mundane

The misplacement of the value for souls for fame is another serious reason for the
failure of the church growth

It was discovered that, if the church must get it right, she must go back to begin with
the John Wesley vision she inherited

FINDINGS OR DECISSION

In accordance with the research on the Effective Christian Leadership and It’s Roles in
Promoting Church Growth a case study of Methodist Church Nigeria, Diocese of Kaduna

It was generally accepted that church growth is a mandate given to the church by the
master of the universe, in conjunction with commission in gospel of Matthew 28 18 –
20.

It was resolved that every leader or minister who want to be successful in the church
growth must divorce himself of egoism, autocratic, and arrogant attitude and embrace
mutual relationship for God to take His place in lives of the members

The majority of the response strongly believed that the church of God must continue to
grow through conscious and unconscious evangelism and mission work. That means the
church must Endeavour to organize programme for mission and personal evangelism
should a daily affairs

For effective church planting, bible study, prayer and fasting temple must be
maintained regularly so as acquires spiritual energy or power to confront evil spirit
because whenever the church began to experience growth, the oppressed will be
delivered, the captives will be set loose, blind will see, in short signs and wonders often
take place both in the spiritual realm and in the physical
Almost everybody contacted, emphasized that lack of church growth in Methodist
church Nigeria, Diocese of Kaduna was due to given much attention to meetings than

mission and evangelistic activities, which also creates unnecessary financial burden
upon the church members in order to sponsor these meetings without spiritual
impartation in the life of the church members

It is discovered that compacted and accelerating of programme neither financial

buoyant nor wealth acquisition without real vision for evangelism, souls wining and
revival which are the God heart bites cannot be term church growth.

it was echoed by the majority respondent that an effective Christian leader, is that
leader that always go ahead of others by leading example so as to motives people to
follow him objectively without pretext

It was agreed, that every effective Christian leadership that could promote church
growth must have deep rooted, and commitment to the kingdom purpose

During the course of the research, it was disclosed by the majority members that, the
major failure and set backwardness in the church growth in Methodist church Nigeria,
diocese of Kaduna, is attributed to the leadership failure most especially among the
ministers

That many ministers approaches kingdom of God’s ministry from civil servant, hence
whether the church is growing or not, their allowance continue runs. Others feels
secured since there is no treat of being disengagement they are satisfied. They forgot
that the chief high priest, promised coming back with His reward in His both hands to
reward every person according to our works may be. Rev 22 : 12

In the course of the research study, the researcher find out that every church leaders
most especially ministers should hold his or her member in high esteem, because every
member of the church is hundred percents (100%) at liberty to attend any church of
choice without being hurt. In other wards you do not have any cord or chain to tied any
member to yourself or church, rather it is just grace and Mercy of God

During this study the researcher also discovered that most ministers abandon
evangelism and mission work due to it rigorousness and many doesn’t want to leave
their comfort zone. They forgot that the bible said woe unto them that easy in Zion. If
Jesus should leave His comfort in heaven to pay the price of our redemption then no
mission work should be too much or hard for us to make.

Also during the research study some response compared most of the present days
church leaders with the shepherd of Israel in Ezekiel 34 : 2 – 6 “son of man, prophesy
against the shepherd of Israel, prophesy and say to them, this is what sovereign Lord
says, woe to the shepherds of Israel who only take care of themselves! Should not
shepherd take care of the flocks? You eat the curds, clothe yourselves with the wool,
and slaughter the choice animals, but you did not take care of the flock.

You have not strengthened the weak or healed the sick or bound up the injured. You
have not brought back the strays or searched for the lost, you have ruled them harshly
and brutally so they were scattered because there was no shepherd and when they
were scattered, they became food for all the wild animals. My sheep wondered over all
the mountain and on every high hill, they were scattered over the whole earth and no
one search or look for them which is terrible. Therefore every one of us in the
leadership capacity should be careful of how we lead the flock of God at our disposals.

Furthermore it was generally agreed, for the church to experience massive church
growth, fund meant for mission and evangelistic outreach should be set aside purely
for it alone without misappropriation, this will bring trust for the members or even the
outsiders to sponsor the field work and with time the church will tremendously
experience turn around both numerically, financially an order wise, for when we seek
first the kingdom, all other thing will added. Mt 6 : 33

The interviewee general opinion was that when the church began to follow the
principles of Biblical method of the five fold ministry and posting, the church will be
healed of tousling and hatred among ministers and as well as minister with the entire
membership in the church for when the church is devoid of offence the light of growth
will ignited

During the discussion, it was strongly upheld that for any church to experience growth
every autocratic, arrogance, and unnecessary egoism should be crucified from among
leadership and they should emblazed humility and meekness because God said He hate
proud and exhorts the humble. What the humble leaders achieved in life the arrogant
leaders could measure in one over ten of the humble so it was advice that we should
stop beating shadow and face the reality of Life, that will enhance abundant reward
from God when we shall meet Him face to face.

CHAPTER FIVE SUMMARY, CONCLUSION, RECOMMENDATIONS

5.1 INTRODUCTION

In this chapter the researcher will present the summary, conclusion, and give some
recommendations to the meticulous thesis work of the Effective Christian Leadership
and it’s roles in promoting church growth.

5 .2 SUMMARY

The study has established the following findings on the Effective Christian Leadership
and It’s Roles in Promoting Church Growth

 That church growth is a mandate given to the church by the master of the
universe, in conjunction with commission in the gospel of Matthew 28 : 18 – 20

 That every leader or minister who want to be successful in the church growth
must devoid himself of egoism, autocratic and arrogant attitudes and embrace
mutual relationship for God to take His place in our lives

 That the church of God must continue to grow through conscious and
unconscious evangelism and mission work. That is, the church must Endeavour to
organize programme for mission and personal evangelism in a daily basis and
periodically as the case may be.

 For effective church planting, Bible study, prayer and fasting temple must be
maintained regularly so as to drives spiritual energy or power to confront evil
spirit because whenever the church began to experience growth, oppress will be
delivered, the captives will be set loose, the blind will see, in short science and
wonder often take place both in the spirit realm and in the physical.

 That the lack of church growth in Methodist church in Methodist church Nigeria,
diocese of Kaduna was due to given much attention to meeting than mission and
evangelistic activities, which also created unnecessary financial burden upon the
members in order to sponsor these meetings without spiritual impartation in the
life of the church member

 That the Major failure and set backwardness in the church in Methodist church
Nigeria, diocese of Kaduna is attributed to the leadership failure most especially
among the minister

 That many ministers approach the kingdom of God’s ministry from civil service,
hence whether the church is growing or not their allowance continue runs.
Others feel hence there is no treat of being disengagement they are satisfied.
They forget that the Chief high priest promised coming back with His reward in
His both hands to reward every person according to our work may be Rev 22 : 12

 That every church leader most especially the ministers should hold his or her
member in high esteem, because every member of the church is hundred
percents (100%) at liberty to attend any church of choice without being hurt, that
is, we do not have any cords or chain to tied any member to ourselves or the
church rather it is just the grace and mercy of God that bring them to us.

 That most of minister who abandon evangelism and mission work due to it
rigorousness and many doesn’t want to leave their comfort zones. They forget
that the Bible said woe to them that are easy in Zion.

5.3 CONCLUSION

From the findings it became obvious to know that the study of effective Christian
leadership and it’s roles in promoting church growth is paramount

There is still hope for a tree if it be cut down that if will sprout again and that the
tender branch thereof will not cease, meaning that hence the root is arrive the tree can
still grow, therefore if the leadership of the church could have a rethink and change
their system, the church can still experience tremendous growth again.

Since the majority of the members complained of the unnecessary routing meeting and
over financial burden by assessment and levy on the church. If the church leadership
should consult financial expat to come out with an acceptable modality by the masses
to stop murmuring and complain that is leading to mass exodus of youth and members,
even scattering churches. The can still be heal and come arrive again.

Finally the researcher discovered that the problem associated with the lack of church
growth confronted for many decades is mostly a man made problem which can easily
be solved, if the leadership could face the reality by telling one another nothing but
truth.

5.4 RECOMMENDATIONS

In the light of the findings and discussion, the researcher wished to give the following
recommendations

 In order to keep the fire of the church growth burning, church leadership should
be united spiritually

 There should be flow of good communication for proper understanding of one

another.

 Let the christen of love should be allowed to spring forth within and over float
the entire church for church can only grow in a peaceful atmosphere
 Let the ministerial training focus on “tent makers” rather than the normal ways
of ministerial training

 The church should adopts open theology for the training of all the leaders and
preachers to deacons and deaconess to enhance productiveness in the ministry
within and the mission and evangelistic outreach
 Ministers should and the entire church member be train on the important of soul
wining and place on target even if it one (1) soul per a month or in three months
and periodically there should evaluation to ascertain numerical growth

5.5 CONTRIBUTION TO KNOWLEDGE

It is discover that lingering conflict over particular matters in the church should be
objectively look into for under rating such often lead to crisis, rather than progressive

In the light of the study, it was importance to know that membership of church a
personal discussion that is why a member could pass more than 10 different churches
before they attend a particular place of worship therefore such members should be
highly be respected by the church leadership, hence if he or she choice to go back to
any other church there is vertically nothing the leader could do.

If any church place more emphases on the important on soul winning and proper
discipleship is put in place and a target of three (1 ) in three months simple arithmetic
formula of ten (10) members church should not be less than 120 members in a year if
they are properly trained they could exceeded 330 members within a year therefore
the researcher is in the opinion that any minister or leader whose performance
spiritually and numerically is far below expectations should be call to order or sanction.

The researcher in his opinion belief, that insecurity in the country today is attributed to
church’s failure in mission and evangelism. How can they repent if they did not heard
and how they if no one tell them? That is, if those people engaging in Boko haram,
banditry, ritual killings, to mention but few were witness to at the appropriate time
probably there would be all these turmoil today.

5.6 SUGGESTIONS
