Advanced Digitalization Technologies for Design,

Construction, and Building Operations:

Impact, Challenges, and the Path Forward

Dr. Salman Azhar

William A. Hunt Endowed Professor
McWhorter School of Building Science
Auburn University, Auburn, Alabama
Background: The Construction Industry Dilemma
 Declining productivity in the last 50
years.

 Push for increased collaboration among

construction stakeholders.

 Increasing demand for intelligent and

smart buildings and infrastructure.

 Significant increase in projects’

complexity, size, and scope throughout
the world.

What is Construction 4.0?
The Three C’s of Construction 4.0
 Connected
All phases and trades are connected to achieve
robust and smooth workflow.
 Content-Enabled
Rich depth of metadata and information in 3D
models. https://veerle.duoh.com/images/inspiration/_1200x630_crop_center-

 Constructible
Real-time collaboration between field and office.
Incudes software, hardware, and people to
maximize productivity.

Construction 4.0 Technologies (2)
To understand the various layers of Construction 4.0, one need to understand
the various underlying technologies which includes:

 BIM and Digital Twins

 Advanced Visualizations (AR/MR/VR)
 Construction Automation and Robotics
 3D Printing and Additive Manufacturing

NTU Singapore Case Study
• IES® was contracted to deliver a visualization model as
well as building performance optimization plan for
Nanyang Technological University (NTU)’s 250-hectare
flagship Ecocampus.
• Using the Digital Twin technology (iSCAN), the company
was able to create models accurate to 91% for total energy
consumption.
• Real operational data from utilities and NTU’s Building
Management Systems was used to achieve optimal
performance.
• This resulted in 31% energy savings potential. $4.7M
financial savings and 9.6kt carbon savings.
2. Advanced Visualizations

 Enhance user’s cognitive capabilities

through interactive visuals.
 Three prominent visual technologies:
 Virtual Reality (VR)
 Augmented Reality (AR)
 Mixed Reality (MR)
Classification
MR Project 1 – Construction Assembly
MR Project 1 – Construction Assembly
MR Project 1 – Construction Assembly
MR Project 2 – Building Inspection & Maintenance
A. Inspection and Maintenance of Hot/Cold Water System
MR Project 2 – Building Inspection & Maintenance
B. Inspection and Maintenance of Light Fixtures
MR Project 3 – Automated Inspection and QA/QC
3. Construction
Automation and
Robotics
 Machines that can perform
or replicate human actions.
 Like manufacturing and
aerospace, construction is
following suit and is using
robotics.
 Could be widely used in
construction assembly
work.
Construction Robotics
Advantages for using robots on site:
 Repetitive tasks that are hard on the human
body.
 Dangerous tasks.
 Areas of labor shortage.
 Automated construction monitoring.

4. 3D Printing
 Creating a complex, physical 3D object from
a BIM.
 Gaining rapid popularity in construction
industry with the advent of new types of
concrete.
 Applications:
 Quick construction
 Prefabrication
 Complex forms
 Formworks

Cost: $10,000
Size: 410 SF
Where: Entirely on site
Size of Printer:
Radis 4.5meters
Height 3.5 meters
Weight 2 tons36

Limitations of 3D printing

• Expensive initial investment

• “Partially builts”

• Rough exterior

• Lack of certification
