II. Background Information for Learners

A computer is a device that receives data, processes it according to the

instructions given, and sends the results to an output device. The data is entered
through the keyboard with the aid of a mouse or a scanner. Data may also come
from internal applications stored as programmed instructions, called software. The
instruction on what to do with the data is done by the central processing unit (CPU).
The result of these processes can be seen through the screen/monitor, printer,
plotter, speakers, and other output devices.

The computer can only follow the command given if it is provided with power.
So before entry of data, the computer unit has to be turned on after power is made
available either through AVR (automatic voltage regulator) or through a UPS
(Uninterruptible Power Supply). The compute is then turned on by pressing the
on/off button. The screen will then display various commands for the user to
choose from.

After using the computer, important documents or files need to be saved

before closing the application used and shutting down the computer. To shut down
the computer, click the power button, then choose the command shut down from the
pop up menu. Once the monitor blacks out, the power is turned off.
