Christmas

is an annual festival commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ, observed

primarily on December 25  as a religious and cultural celebration among billions of
people around the world.  A feast central to the Christian liturgical year, it is preceded
by the season of Advent or the Nativity Fast and initiates the season of Christmastide,
which historically in the West lasts twelve days and culminates on Twelfth Night.
Christmas Day is a public holiday in many countries,  is celebrated religiously by a
majority of Christians, as well as culturally by many non-Christians,  and forms an
integral part of the holiday season organized around it.

The traditional colors of Christmas decorations are red, green, and gold. Red
symbolizes the blood of Jesus, which was shed in his crucifixion; green symbolizes
eternal life, and in particular the evergreen tree, which does not lose its leaves in the
winter; and gold is the first color associated with Christmas, as one of the three gifts
of the Magi, symbolizing royalty. The Christmas tree was first used by German
Lutherans in the 16th century, with records indicating that a Christmas tree was
placed in the Cathedral of Strassburg in 1539, under the leadership of the Protestant
Reformer, Martin Bucer. In the United States, these "German Lutherans brought the
decorated Christmas tree with them; the Moravians put lighted candles on those trees.
