ANGUS "Corru-Grip" Storz Couplings

ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS
NEW ANGUS "CORRU-GRIP" COLLARS ON STORZ
In lieu of this fixture, Angus mounting brackets MB4 & MB5 may be bolted to a table top.

SHORT SHANK COUPLINGS

(NFPA 1963 COMPLIANT)
1) Fabricate a simple fixture as shown in sketch (fig. no. 1). This fixture can be
held either in a vice or screwed permanently to the edge of a work bench. Gripping the
Storz coupling in a vice is not recommended , but if you do, then these precautions
must be taken.
a. After gripping in the vice, the inner shank must be completely free to rotate.
THE INNER ROTATING SHANK MUST NOT TOUCH THE VICE, or hose and coupling
assembly will be incorrect.
b. After releasing from the vice, check for damage on the two projecting cam lugs
on the Storz swivel head.

2) Place an Angus "Storz" short shank coupling over the assembly fixture shown.
To properly mate with the Angus "Corru-Grip" collar, the Storz short-shank coupling must
be obtained from Angus.

3) Assemble Angus "Hi-Vol" hose over the end of the Storz shank, and force the
hose downward until it is against the stop at the bottom of the shank (approximately 2").

4) Assemble the three parts of the "Corru-Grip" Collar with two screws as shown in
fig. no. 3. Leave 1/2" gap between the segments. DO NOT LUBRICATE THE
THREADS. (The cap screws are 3/8" x 16 t.p.i. x 1-1/2" long - cadmium plated).

5) Assemble the "Corru-Grip" Collar on the hose with the tapered side pointed away
from the "Storz" swivel head as in fig. no. 4. Assembly can be readily accomplished by
opening the two loose ends of the "Corru-Grip" Collar as shown in fig. no. 5. Then turn
the ends of the "Corru-Grip" back to their original position. The flat side of the as-
sembled "Corru-Grip" Collar rests against the top of the "Storz" swivel head for all 4"
couplings supplied after 1 January 1981, and for all 5" couplings.
3 1/8" Dia. 4" Storz
4 1/4" Dia. 5" Storz 6) Carefully insert the third screw, being certain not to cross the
threads. DO NOT LUBRICATE THE THREADS.

7) Using a 5/16" Allen wrench, progressively tighten each screw

until the gap between each segment is approximately 1/4". Do this by
taking one full turn of the Allen wrench on each screw.
Weld
8) Check that the hose is straight on the coupling shank.

9) FINAL TIGHTENING OF THE SCREWS. Progressively tighten

the three screws by alternately turning each screw 90°. Keep the gap
between each segment at the same width during the progressive
tightening.

FIG 4

New screws should be torqued to 35-40 foot pound maximum.

10) COUPLING SERVICE TEST FOR SUPPLY HOSE. - After

assembly, service test all hose for for five 5 minutes as per Chapter 5
of the N.F.P.A. 1962 Standard current edition.

FIG 5 a) Recoupled Hose (used hose) - Service Test +10% supply

Head hose: 4" - 250 psig; 5" - 222 psig.
b) New Hose - Service test to: 4" 225 psig; 5" 200 psig.
c) Old Hose (before July 1987) - Service test to: 1/2 the pressure
stenciled on hose (i.e., 400 stencil/200 test).

11) This will cause the "Corru-Grip" collar to take a "set" on the
shank of the "Storz" couplings. A perfect grip is now achieved as the
"Corru-Grip" collar is slightly cutting into the rubber cover of the hose, -
(i.e. in the same manner the serrations of an ordinary expansion ring
coupling cut into the cover).
