new skills #1 One-to-One Function is A function for which every element of the range of the
function corresponds to exactly one element of the domain.

Presenting the figure below, the teacher will ask the students to define what
INVERSE means to them and relate it in function.

*Based from the Illustration, what do you mean by Inverse?

Vocabulary

Inverse of a Function is the function obtained by interchanging the elements

of the ordered pairs of the original function. A function has an inverse function
if and only if it is one-to-one.

Expected answer: A relation reversing the process performed by any function of

f ( x ) is called an inverse of f ( x). This means that every element of the range
corresponds to exactly one element of the domain.

*Why is it states that only one – to – one function has the only one which has an
inverse? Why not all functions?

Expected Answer: The Inverse of a not one – to – one function will not be a
valid function.

Proof:

Let f be a one-to-one function with domain A and range B. Then the inverse of
f denoted f −1, is a function with domain A and range B denoted by f −1(y) = x if
and only if f(x) = y for any y in B.

Illustration:
Example 1. Find the inverse of a function described by the set of ordered pairs
A={(1, 2),( 2, 3) ,(3 , 4) ,(4,5)}.

The inverse of A denoted by A−1 can be obtained by interchanging the values of

x and y, that is

A−1 ¿ {(2,1),(3 ,2),(4 ,5) ,(5,4)}

Example 2. Let B={(−2 ,−4) ,(−1 ,−2) ,(0,0),(1 , 2) ,(2 , 4) }, the inverse of B is
B−1={(−4 ,−2),(−2 ,−1),(0,0) ,(2,1),( 4 , 2)}
E. Discussing new Given an equation, the inverse can be determined by following these 3 steps.
concepts and practicing 1. write the function in the form y = f(x);
new skills #2 2. interchange the x and y variables;
3. solve for y in terms of x

Example 3.

Given the example above, let us prove the property of an inverse of one
– to – one function stated below.

−1 x−1
Prove that f ( f −1 ( x ) )=x . Since f ( x )=3 x +1 and f ( x )= . Then, to find
3
the composite function, we have

f ( x )=3 x +1
f ( f −1 ( x ) )=3 ( x−1
3 )
+1 Divide the expression by 3, we have x−1

f ( f ( x ) )=( x−1)+1
−1
By Addition Property of Equality.
f ( f ( x ) )=x
−1

−1 x−1
Prove that f −1 ( f ( x ) )=x . Since f ( x )=3 x +1 and f ( x )= . Then, to find
3
the composite function, we have

−1 x−1
f ( x )=
3
−1 ( 3 x +1 )−1
f ( f ( x ) )= Perform subtraction in +1 and −1.
3
−1 3x
f ( f ( x ) )= Perform division 3 x by 3
3
f ( f ( x ) )=x
−1

( 2 x 3 +1 )
Example 4. Find the inverse of f =

y=

3 3 x−1

2
−1
f ( x )=

3 3 x−1

Example 5. Find the Inverse of f (x)= x2 + 4 x – 2.

Expected answer: y=± √ x+ 6−2 . does not represent a function because
there are some x values that correspond to two different y-values (e.g. if x = 3, y
can be 1 or – 5.) Therefore, the function f(x) = x2 + 4x – 2 has NO INVERSE
FUNCTION.
