Bose's political career took off in the early 1920s, when he joined
the Indian National Congress, the leading political party in the
Indian independence movement. He quickly rose through the
ranks of the Congress and was elected as the President of the
party in 1938. However, Bose's ideas for the independence
struggle were at odds with those of the Congress leadership, and
he resigned from the party in 1939.
Bose's vision for the independence struggle was more radical
than that of the Congress. He believed that India's freedom could
only be achieved through an armed struggle against the British.
In 1940, he formed the Forward Bloc, a political organization that
aimed to unite all anti-British forces in India.
In 1941, Bose left India for Germany, where he met with Adolf
Hitler and other German leaders. He sought their help in his fight
against the British. With German support, Bose formed the
Indian National Army (INA) in 1942. The INA, along with other
Indian troops, fought alongside the Japanese army against the
British Indian army in Burma and India.
