1. Answer any Three of the following 3×2 = 6


a) For any two positive integers 𝑚, 𝑛 such that 𝑔𝑐𝑑(𝑚, 𝑛) = 1, prove that 𝑚ℤ⁄𝑚𝑛ℤ ≃ ℤ𝑛 ;
b) Let 𝐺 be a cyclic group of order 𝑛 and ∅ be the Euler ∅–function . Prove that |𝐴𝑢𝑡(𝐺)| =
∅(𝑛);
c) Show that Aut(S8 )≃ Klein 4-group;
d) Show that the only characteristic subgroups of (ℚ, +) are {0} 𝑎𝑛𝑑 ℚ.

2. Answer any Two of the following 2×4 = 8


a) Which of the following statements are true? Justify.
i) The quotient group 4ℤ⁄64ℤ has five subgroups.
ii) ℤ(𝐴𝑢𝑡(𝐺)) = {𝑒} ; only when ℤ(𝐺) = {𝑒} and G be a group.

b) Let G be a group and let 𝐺 ′ be the commutator subgroup of G ,then prove that
i) 𝐺 ′ be a normal subgroup of G ;
ii) If H is a normal subgroup of G , then G/H is abelian iff G'⊂H.

c) Let G be a group and H be a subgroup of G. H is called a characteristic subgroup of G if


f(H)⊆H for all f ∈ Aut(G).
i) Let H and K be subgroups of G such that 𝐻 ⊆ 𝐾. Show that if H is a characteristic
subgroup of K and K is a characteristic subgroup of G ,then H is a characteristic
subgroup of G.
ii) Suppose G is cyclic. Show that every subgroup of G is a characteristic subgroup of
G.

3. Answer any One of the following 1×2 =2


a) Can the cyclic group ℤ12 be expressed as an internal direct product of two proper
subgroups?
b) Prove that Aut(ℤ2 × ℤ2 ) ≃ 𝑆3

4. Answer any Two of the following 2×4 = 8


a) Let G be a group such that 𝐺 = 𝐻1 × 𝐻2 × … × 𝐻𝑛 ,where 𝐻𝑖 is a subgroup of G .Let
𝐾𝑖 be a normal subgroup of G such that 𝐾𝑖 ⊂ 𝐻𝑖, 1 ≤ 𝑖 ≤ 𝑛. 𝐿𝑒𝑡 𝐾 = 𝐾1 × 𝐾2 × … × 𝐾𝑛 .

b) Prove that a finite Abelian group G is the internal direct product of subgroups H and K if
and only if i) 𝐻 ∩ 𝐾 = {𝑒} 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑖𝑖) |𝐺| = |𝐻||𝐾|.
c) Can the dihedral group 𝐷4 be expressed as an internal direct product of two proper
subgroups? Justify.

5. Answer any Three of the following 3×2 =6


a) Let G be a group of order 77 acting on a set S of 20 elements . Show that G must have a
fixed point;
b) Find the number necklaces with six beads and two colors;
c) Let G be a group and H be a subgroup of G of finite index n. Then there is a homomorphism
∅: 𝐺 → 𝑆𝑛 such that 𝐾𝑎𝑟∅ = ⋂𝑥∈𝐺 𝑥𝐻𝑥 −1 .

d) Show that the alternating group 𝐴𝑛 is generated by cycles of length three.

6. Answer any Two of the following 2×4 = 8


a) Let g be a group . The left action of G on the set G is defined by conjugation ,i.e.,(𝑔, 𝑥) →
𝑔𝑥𝑔−1 , for all 𝑔, 𝑥 ∈ 𝐺.Show that the kernel of the homomorphism 𝜓: 𝐺 → 𝐴(𝐺) induced
by this action is Z(G).
b) Let G be the group of symmetries of cube . Prove that each of the following sets is a G-set:
i) Set of vertices;
ii) Set of faces;
iii) Set of edges;
c) Can a simple group of order 63 contain a subgroup of order 21? Justify.

7. Answer any Two of the following 2×2 = 4


a) Prove that for any group G ,|𝐺 ⁄𝑍(𝐺)| ≠ 91;
b) Let G be a group of order 143.Show that Sylow 11-subgroup of G is unique . Also , show
that G is cyclic.
c) Let 𝐺 be commutative group of order 𝑝𝑞, where 𝑝 and 𝑞 are distinct primes. Show that
G is cyclic. Is this result true when 𝑝 = 𝑞

8. Answer any Two of the following 2×4 = 8


a) Let G be a finite group that has only two conjugate classes, find the order of G. Also find
the class equation for 𝑆5 .
b) Let G be a simple group of order 168.
i) Show that G has eight Sylow 7-subgroups
ii) Let H be a Sylow 7-subgroup. Show that |𝑁𝐺 (𝐻)| = 21
iii) Show that G has no subgroup of order 14.
c) Which of the following statements are true? Justify
i) Let G and H be groups of order 39 and 21 respectively. These two groups are not
isomorphic, but their Sylow 3-subgroups are isomorphic;
ii) There exists only one (up to isomorphism) group of order 65;
