Air Pollution

The letter expresses concern about air pollution in Bucharest, Romania, where over 25,000 people die prematurely each year from poor air quality. It proposes integrating air quality sensors throughout the city to identify the most polluted locations and help authorities take appropriate measures. The sensors would be provided by Aerlive, a company that monitors air purity using compact, wireless sensors that transmit real-time data for public viewing. Official figures show pollution limits have already been exceeded this year in the capital.

President: Klaus Iohannis

Dear Mister President Klaus Iohannis:

I am writing this letter to express my and many others concern of the critical change in air pollution in
the capital of Romania, Bucharest. In recent studies, over 25,000 people die prematurely due to air
pollution.

A solution that we, the community, thinks it’s a great step is to integrate sensors – devices that record
the purity of the air – all around Bucharest, therefor we know where the most polluted locations are so
we can take the appropriate measures without using unnecessary equipment, which can be costly.

Aerlive is a company which does exactly what I mentioned above. It monitors the quality of the air
using powerful sensors. The sensors used in aerlive.ro are called uRADMonitor Industrial, they have a
compact design and the ability to transmit data, in real time, over long distances up to 8 km in the
urban environment. The stations are manufactured by Timasorean company Magnasci and are
installed in over 1500 locations worldwide. The recorded data can be viewed in the form of hourly and
daily averages. The information recorded is available to any consumer for free in the internet. In it’s
current state, it’s only a beta, but that will change from 1st march 2020, when the platform will be fully
developed.

The official figures communicated through the Air Quality Monitoring system show that the limits of
the pollution level in the Capital have been exceeded for this year. At the same time, Greenpeace
Romania shows that the monitoring system works with major syncopes, a situation recognized by the
authorities.
