Outreach Program: Embracing Differences, putting

Smiles on Children's faces

A Narrative Report
By STEM – Santos and Lagmay
February 3, 2023

Two sections, Santos and Lagmay, in the 12th grade under the strand Science,

Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) of Ilocos Norte National High School

conducted an outreach program at Special Education Center located at Barangay 1 Sta. Rita,

Bacarra. The outreach program commenced on the 3rd of February, 2023.

We composed a documentary that would give insight into the school lives of 25 special

education pupils as well as how a small act can impact their lives. Although the reason for this

project was for our compliance on the final practicum for Empowerment Technology under Mr.

Romnick Castillo, we performed this with the goal of wanting to give back to the community,

starting with children. We connected with Mrs. Avegail Natividad, teacher of the kindergarten

pupils, and after which it was approved by their Principal Mr. Aristides A. Acoba, us students

started planning for it. With the objective of teaching pupils how to read and write, providing the

children with school supplies, and feeding them for the day, the team spent three weeks to plan

and collaborate with each other to make the program possible. Section Lagmay was responsible
for buying the school materials to be distributed to the pupils. Section Santos, on the other hand,

bought ingredients, and cooked food for the pupils. To fund the project, the team each

contributed a fair amount voluntarily. Since the target of the said project was sped pupils, we

needed to research on how to handle them in a way that they feel like they are not any different

to any other pupil in their class.

When we arrived at the school, around 9:30 in the morning, we started by letting the pupils

know who we are in order for them to be aware of who they are conversing with. They were

taught well on how to respond with visitors and welcomed us with smiles already. We sang

children songs with them, and played guess the animal and their sounds and as moments passed,

the children were enjoying themselves. We then gave them a bond paper consisting the alphabet

letters to trace, and finally gave them macaroni soup for snacks. At this point of time, each of us

were talking with the children to get to know them. All of them were nice and thanked us for

giving them school materials. We took photos with the pupils and their teachers before bidding

goodbye. The program was an hour and half, and it ended around 11 am.

Education is one of the most significant treasure a child should possess hence we should

never deny children the support they need. Each one has their own pace in learning, growing,

and evolving as a human being. The ultimate goal of special education is to integrate the learners

with special needs into the regular school system. Academic interventions, curriculum

adaptations, learning resource support, career and guidance counselling programs, and transition

programs focusing on technical-vocational competencies and/or special interest skill

development are examples of these programs and services provided by the schools. Children are

the starting point of a race. Obstacles will try to stop them from getting to their goals but this
surely would teach them what life really is. After the program, we felt like different people. A

shift of moment that we couldn’t wrap our minds around. The ecstatic feeling of fulfilment for

taking a step into helping children as a social change movement. We didn’t just help them have

fun as they learn, they taught us such special life lesson which I quote, and “We shouldn’t see

life as to what’s missing or what we don’t have, but instead what is already there to see.” As they

say, children are the future of humanity. We could only imagine if we all start to take those steps

into helping, little by little, then we could change how our future would be. Life is cruel enough;

Start being more kind in a way that the future of our world foresee us as the model of great

humanity.
